The Future at Five: Gendered aspirations of five-year-oldsEduSkills OECD
The OECD's International Early Learning and Child Well-Being Study asked more than 4 000 five-year-olds in England (UK) and Estonia what they want to be or do when they grow up.
We found that gender norms were clearly evident in their aspirations, with gender stereotyping particularly strong among boys.

This study explored potential differences in divergent thinking between males and females. It analyzed data from 1,377 subjects across various age groups. The results showed that females generally outperformed males on verbal creativity tasks, while males performed better on graphical tasks. Younger children showed more pronounced differences between sexes compared to adults, for whom few differences were found. The study concluded that males and females approach creativity tasks qualitatively differently, and standard identification procedures may underestimate some gifted individuals based on gender. Educators should consider these differences when assessing and promoting creativity.
The passage discusses how Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary portrays feminism. It argues that through his realistic portrayal of the protagonist Emma Bovary, Flaubert revealed aspects of his own personality and can be seen as the "father of feminism" for his empathetic depiction of a romantic woman's struggles in 19th century society. The passage also gives a brief overview of Emma's character and romanticized worldview that ultimately leads to disappointment with her confined life.

Gender inequality in the workplace is a complex issue with reasonable arguments on both sides. While some level of inequality still exists, as seen in disparities in wages and leadership positions, opportunities for women have greatly expanded. However, stereotypes and social factors also still influence perceptions and expectations in ways that can disadvantage women. Fully addressing gender inequality requires changes to both workplace policies and societal mindsets regarding gender roles and abilities.
Every company began as a startup. Even massive companies that are now known for having horrible cultures began with cultures that were often positive and passionate. While working at a 100 year-old organization early in her career, Jessica Lawrence experienced the textbook definition of unhealthy culture and outdated management thinking. Now, as the Executive Director of NY Tech Meetup, a non-profit organization and the world's largest Meetup group, she sees the challenges that technology startups face and how they can easily slip into patterns of unhealthy culture by following old models of business. In this session, Jessica will explore the incredible opportunity that startups have to not just build great products, but to build a whole generation of better companies. She will examine the changing landscape of leadership and culture, and look at what ideas, skills, and practices are key to creating a better future of work and business.
Overview of "The Science of Gender and Science" - the Pinker/Spelke Debate, b...Amy Goodloe
Steven Pinker and Elizabeth Spelke, both Harvard psychology professors, debated whether innate differences or discrimination explain the lack of women in science careers. Pinker argued innate gender differences in interests, variability in abilities, and spatial skills favor men in math and science. However, Spelke countered that studies show no inherent differences in children and biases influence perceptions of gender abilities. She provided multiple examples showing social and parental expectations, not innate factors, impact career choices. While both made arguments, Spelke supported her position that discrimination, not biology, creates disparities with extensive evidence from research in her field of expertise.
The Science of Gender and Science: Pinker vs. SpelkeAmy Goodloe
Steven Pinker and Elizabeth Spelke, both Harvard psychology professors, debated whether innate differences or discrimination explain the lack of women in science careers. Pinker argued innate gender differences in interests, variability in abilities, and spatial skills favor men in math and science. Spelke countered that gender differences only appear on subjective tests and are due to parents and teachers having lower expectations of girls, not innate factors. She cited studies finding infants and young children develop skills like those needed in science equally, regardless of gender. While both made arguments, Spelke supported her view with multiple examples from literature in her area of expertise.

- Lingering misogyny persists, with more Indonesian men feeling women's empowerment disadvantages men or causes more anger toward women.
- Most Indonesians, unlike global views, believe women have not achieved equality because they do not truly want it, reflecting a traditional perspective that women's roles are in the home.
- Both men and women in Indonesia agree that while women have rights, they lack real power or influence in leadership roles

Are children’s job aspirations defined by gender
1. Are children’s job aspirations defined by gender?
A selection of drawings submitted by 7-11 year olds
2. “While these drawings might seem like a fairly light-hearted
way to examine the topic of gender diversity, they are a
worrying indication that children are still associating certain
job roles with specific genders. This early-age stereotyping
will likely impact the roles, industries and positions they look
at as adults. More needs to be done to encourage diversity
and inclusion in schools and in the adult working world, but it
is certainly our responsibility to lead by example.”
OLIVER WATSON, EXECUTIVE BOARD DIRECTOR FOR
UK & NORTH AMERICA, PAGEGROUP
Our study revealed that young children in the UK hold
gender-stereotyped views when it comes to specific job
roles. Drawings from over one hundred children aged 7-11
were submitted. Each child was asked to draw a nurse, a
builder, a lawyer and a banker, and also the job they aspire
to when they grow up. Where gender was identifiable, the
drawings showed a clear gender skew for specific roles:
•81% of children drew nurses as female;
•88% of children drew builders as male;
•80% of children drew bankers as male;
•65% of children drew lawyers as male making it the most
gender balanced of the four professions
4 out of 5 children think banking is a man’s job and nursing is
a woman’s
The following slides are a representative sample of the drawings submitted
