Arc 211-American Diversity and Design
Discussion

Spring 2017
Project Number2-3
http://icmtel.org/2017/show/home
My Name Is Shiqiang Shao, I am currently taking ARC 211 because my dad
wants me to have some knowledge about Architecture. My discussions have
been based off my own opinion and I try to answer them with love so people
can have fun read my paper and not think that I just say things to make get
grade. Although getting an A in this class will be super beneficial to me and I
hope that my discussions and the questions that I give is helpful to someone.
I thought that the many TED talk videos were extremely compelling and the
little something you add in class is beneficial. My meets in this class are
sometimes diluted by the fact that there are many instances where the discussion
questions are too difficult.
Hidden Consequences, Flaws of Design!
The editors state that “diverse participation in the design process, from both
professionals and public citizens alike, yields more equitable results.” This makes sense,
but typically has not been the case. Nonetheless, many marginalized groups have
impacted design in ways that have changed our visual and physical worlds as well as our
systems, policies, and institutions. For example, in the 1960s, disability rights advocates
designed media events to raise awareness about barriers in the physical environment.
They persisted with their efforts for decades, and, finally, in 1990, the Americans with
Disabilities Act became law. It mandated accessibility in public accommodations such as
restaurants and stores, public transportation, communication, and other areas of public
life. This dramatically changed our physical environment
Now it’s your turn. Describe a design that was impacted by a diversity group.
How and why did it change form and/or circumstances? (Note that a design
can be anything requiring planning and development prior to the production
of an action, system, visual, material object, or environment. Also, keep in
mind that, for our purposes, a diversity group is a group of individuals who
are underrepresented in society in some way—children, older adults, the
economically disadvantaged, those with cognitive disabilities, etc.)
After reading all these comments regarding the Obama care system, I don't have the
choice to use that so I am very curious as to what it is. I did a little research and it is
very similar to the insurance the school provide me, but it is so much cheaper! Is
health insurance really for the benefit of the people? Does it really help society move
forward, I feel like when people really do need medical help they do not get it and
often time miss interpreted and those with money don’t pay nearly enough to support
those who do not have the needs to pay their own bills. Forcing people to buy
insurance is one of the most corrupted system implemented by the law and that is
really only to extort money out of the people. How many times have someone damage
your car and ran away, you are scared to call insurance because they will increase the premium? This is so bad how they
force people to get insurance to squeeze out every possible penny.

“What is design?” from Hello World: Where Design Meets Life by Alice Rawsthron
For this discussion, let’s move away from 246 B.C. China, and into the U.S. Describe an
innovation or invention (can be current or historical) that gave advantage to a group of
people in the U.S. or to the population as a whole. What were the social impacts of this
innovation? Were any groups negatively impacted by this innovation? For example, the
telegraph, developed and patented in the United States in 1837 by Samuel Morse, permitted
people and commerce to transmit messages across both continents and oceans almost
instantly, with widespread social and economic impacts. This heightened communication
speed allowed business persons to make decisions with up-to-date information, often resulting
in big profits. Those without access had to rely on outdated information, which put them at a
disadvantage
Why do you think it take so long for people to invent it? It most has been possible before because
they have round pots so they must of see it rolled before.
The definition of Design is something out of one’s perception of the world. The world is a design,
that is why I thought the name of the article hello world to be so interesting! The dictionary
definition of Design is " a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a
building, garment, or other object before it is built or made." I would say that the world wide web is
one of the designs that made the world turn forward instead of anything else. This is something that
we should all take a look for, think about it, how would we be doing this assignment without the
web? This is an advantage and this is a way communication that is heightened beyond belief.
I feel like with efficient power plants comes the problem with more and more people relying on
man natural resources as its most useful source of energy. That is not exactly the foot in right
direction because people are not using their brains to come up with more natural way of producing energy.

Media/Society and TED Talk Photos that Changed the World
Where would you place the images shown in Photos That Changed the World into
Croteau and Hoynes' diagram entitled “Model of Media and the Social World”? Identify
a mass media photograph taken in your own lifetime that has served as an icon of an
event.
I would place those under the media message since photos are something that is dying out. We
do not want to admit it but it is slowly but surely dying. People are getting bored with photos
and that is why people are inventing moving images as profile pictures. Facebook for example
has movie profile picture over regular profile picture, this proves that people are trying to
move away from the age of photography, soon enough it will be art like painting and drawings.
Maybe later pictures will be worth more because they do say that a picture is worth millions of
words. Once people get the idea of something it will set and become an Icon. Like NASA first
man on moon that become a very popular icon for America achievements.
I agree, when photos show the harsh reality, how are we supposed to believe that? Photos are
something that is used widely to spread false hope and ideas so I think that it is like you say
awful times get shown but we do not trust it and so we do not do much.

IDEA Awards and Cradle-to-Cradle
Which of the 2016 IDEA Gold Award products seems to defy the Cradle-to-
Cradle concept developed by architect William McDonough and chemist Dr.
Michael Braungart? How does this product resist or disregard the concept?
Please provide your own example of a product that uses Cradle-to-Cradle design.
Describe and cite sources
Now more than ever we need to be hard on the companies that make products to
respect the cradle to cradle design. Our planet is changing and it is not before soon
that we run out of important recourses. A device on the IDEA that I think does regard
the cradle to cradle design at all and that is because the galaxy s 6 edge is the most
wasteful device. It is not only very bad in battery life and therefore you have to
charge it more than other phones, you also have to switch the galaxy faster than any
other phone because of how easy it is to crack a screen like the galaxy. The devices
rarely get traded in because of how little their value is and that it is simply unbearable
when it comes to its battery overheating and blowing up and the weird screens. It is
not environment friendly but it really doesn't follow the cradle to cradle concept
simply because of how fast they pump out new devices making the older generations
obsolete. I think League of legend follows the cradle to cradle design pretty well, it is
a game that constantly updates and is free, this way people don't have to go out and buy new games and sooner or later company won't
waste resources to create games that needs a physical copy's. (League of legend is an online game) everyone has a PC somewhere so it
is a very environmentally friendly game.

“Industrial Design” by John Heskett and "The Incredible Inventions of Intuitive AI"
by Maurice Conti
In his chapter on industrial design (written in 1987), historian John Heskett claims that
the methods of mass production introduced by Henry Ford in the U.S. involved new
concepts of the standardization and integration of the production line that were
adopted across the world. With Ford’s method, work could be completed by relatively
unskilled workers; it was more efficient and with this method, products were made
more quickly and cheaply than previously possible. What were some of the social
consequences of Ford’s production line?
I believe that the biggest social consequence Ford's production line had on U.S society
was the automobile becoming the most popular form of transportation. Before Ford
began using the production line in factories, cars were very expensive so only incredibly
wealthy people could afford them. The production line made the cost to make an
automobile much cheaper, making it possible for the common man to purchase a car. I
also believe over the next twenty years we as a society will continue to see an increase in
machines replacing the unskilled worker for labor. As a result, people will have to be
even more specialized when it comes to job training and school.
I think that it’s not because of society changing that we are choosing different jobs but
rather because we think of ourselves as privileged and too good for some jobs. No one is
expecting to pay over 50,000$ in fees to attend college and coming out with 7-10$ an
hour jobs, it is just not logic. So I think the factory process did not really impact it.

Ballantyne and Zumthor
Andrew Ballantyne and Peter Zumthor present ideas about architecture that seem to
value the sensorial and material elements of life. How are Ballantyne’s and
Zumthor’s viewpoints on architecture alike? More importantly, how do they differ?
This is very strait forward, as because both Peter Zumthor and Ballantyne believe in
similar things and that they both study architecture in the highest level. Both Zumthor
and Ballantyne think that a building should reflect culture, it should reflect time and
the high light of people. It should have a meaning to people and that the building
should be special to those around it. That is what they both believe, but when it comes
to differences it is pretty big too. Ballantyne thinks that Old Structures, old church
building and ancient structures such as temples and arena was his main focal point
and this is extreme difference to the Zumthors modernist look. Zumthor believes that
even if you use very good material, if the structure does not feel good to live in than it
is useless. He looks at modern building with the opinion of improve and petrification.
This is what they differ in and this is how they value buildings in the elements of life.
That must be the great wall of China, it is the only structure that make me go. Wow
that is big. I am a big guy so that is not something I think very often. But I think a
better question is, what is the first structure to make you relate to yourself?

Pruitt Igoe Project, Talen, and Larson
Imagine that you are part of an urban planning and design firm working with Emily
Talen (author of “Design That Enables Diversity”) and Kent Larson (who gave the
TED Talk "Brilliant Designs to Fit More People In Every City" The thee of you have
been tasked with developing a plan to rebuild Pruitt Igoe in St. Louis. City officials told
the three of you that that they want to do it right this time. Identify three strategies for
rebuilding Pruitt Igoe in ways that promise to be more successful. What would Talen
do? What would Larson do? What would you do? How would your strategies differ
from those of the original urban planners/designers of the project? Why would your
strategies be more effective?
We will not be like Pruitt Igoe failed to create something good because he is stupid, truly
stupid. He is Bad! I promise I will make a better structure and better apartments for the
people, we will build big walls to protect ourselves and keeping out others. We will. Now
think about what the problem is with Pruitts design, it was very bad, truly horrendous.
Why it was bad because it did not have much light natural light that will give the place
more essence. It Did not have any technology and it was very poor diversify. Telen say
that there is lack of diversity, I love diversity and I think Diversity is wonderful but they
lacked diversity. Very stupid, its horrendous I would have more diversity by putting ads
and showing people the place. Everyone should love each other and accept their
counterparts, there should not be hate it should be communities first. We need to keep
communities first if we want to design somethings good, we need great designs, the task
is tremendous it really is, we will make the buildings big, bigger than ever, it will be
great. The design before had too little rooms and too little space people feel disgusting
and crowd so we will design the opposite. Truly wonderful idea that Lardon came up
with is technology, he is smart very smart. His idea is fantastic build structure and put
great technology and fun into it, it’s going to be amazing. To say that they
destroy building because of crime, that's wrong, that’s stupid. The real idea is the cause
for the crime rate, it’s horrible, so with wonderful natural lights, big walls, great
technology, closer malls with affordable products, diversity in community, and bigger
buildings surrounded in a big wonderful wall. I think we can make our design great, we
can make our community great again. Sorry I think I have much of fun.

F.L. Olmsted
Frederick Law Olmsted stated that "Buffalo is the best planned city, as to its streets,
public places, and grounds, in the United States, if not in the world." What was the
basis for this claim? Would Olmsted still make that claim today? Why or why not?
In the Upper side of New York, it was actually very different from what it is now. For
example, now when you think New York you think New York city. When People say
New York people will think of Queen, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island not a lot of
people will think about Buffalo. But Before Olmsted was planning the street and public
spaces including playgrounds for Buffalo because it was the city to be in. For example,
before people say New York and Buffalo will come to mind, the industry and factory was
very successful here and people want to come here for job and so more and more people
come. I think at that time the claim of it being the best might not be not true but now it is
so not true. It is very unfortunate because the glory it once had is no longer here now it is
dead in the area, Olmsted would not make the claim today because if he had saw what it
has become he know he make wrong choice and mistake. The Buffalo area does have
impeccable design but it is no more of what it is before today, walking distance is not
possible in buffalo.
Exactly, from that time period sure Buffalo may be the most renowned city with its
booming industries and advance factory. But that is no more, the Olmsted that created the
city’s planning today would not have made it this way since cities like Dubai is far better. What do you think UB would have looked
like if Olmsted planned it? Will it have more parking or more trees?

Walter Hood's Work
Identify something that should be memorialized either on UB's campus or in your
hometown. Imagine that you are the person who will oversee this project, and
that you are using Walter Hood's 'triad of investigations' as your approach to the
project. What would your landscape intervention commemorate/memorialize?
How will you use Hood's 'triad of investigations' to design a new landscape
intervention? What do you imagine that the design will be? (Either written or
visual descriptions are acceptable).
This is very easy for me to choose, the great wall of China is without a doubt the most
memorable structure and landscape to me. When I think how hard it is for people to
build tall building today even with all the machine and big technology compared to
back than where they have hands and stone tools. I think this is very hard to imagine
because people now cannot live in a place with stone tools. The Wall were built to
protect the country and it served as a power symbol and so when I look at the structure
I feel proud and I think landscape is memorialized. It symbolizes the millions of people
who die to work for the wall, making sure it is up and now it is the largest structure
made. Triad investigation would make the great wall of china the greatest symbol of
power and China at its prime state.
I think that the wall idea is severely different now, because Trump really put a new
meaning into the word wall. What would be complex enough so that a wall will be
remember even if you are not there to witness it

Charles Davis and equityXdesign'
Critique either the MLK Memorial or the National Museum of African
American History and Culture using equity X design’s core beliefs and/or design
principles. (Use the beliefs or principles that are most relevant to your critique
rather than all of them
The MLK memorial is a large closed off area where people can go and visit King for
all of his good doing for the equality of African American and many others in the
United States. I think using the EquityXdeisgn core belief this memorial would be
unsatisfactory. Not only is the statue very stern and mad looking the color is different.
I think that they should do a better job make the statue look more like king. Kings
benevolence and kindness along with his nonviolent protest made him the icon and
role model that he is today so the statue that is use to symbolize King does not
represent someone of that degree. King should have been depicted nicer and kind
I have never seen the National museum of African American History and
culture, what is the process that obstruct senator? Is it the culture?

"Landscape Stories"
First, let’s start with your own home. Describe a place in your home (indoors and/or
outdoors) that you think of as representative of your own ethnic background and discuss
why you consider this place to be ‘ethnic’. –OR-- Describe an object in your home that
you think of as representative of your ethnic background and discuss why this object is
considered to be ‘ethnic’. (If possible, add photo/s.) Is this object or place something that
you will keep or continue when you establish your own home? Why or why not?
In my house hold we have object like ash of our ancestor and some figure of Chinese god, we
keep that as a respect to the people who create this family and to the god that make our country
very properness. I think that I will not continue that tradition because when I was raise in
China we don't really have that in our house for long time, when my grand mom die we do not
really clean up the ash area and change fruits. I think this is a good representation of China
because before our country is very poor and do not have much so we try to cherish what we
have and because of that we will always look ahead. But now that time has changed and we
really do not have the time to think about the past thing so that it is very important that we can
move past the tradition that does not benefit time. Now the community I was raise has lot of
drinking place and small snack I think that now that tradition is change because of law, the law
says that after that day no one can have food stall because it is not clean so they have law to
prohibit the thing that make our town special. That is what I think that the government do not care about the preservation for future
kid.
I also have that picture all over my house, sometime I ask myself why that word is upside down. Do you know why?

Sports Branding
Recent controversies about sports branding focus on ethnicity. The Washington Redskins team is
just one example of the larger controversy, but it receives the most public attention due to the
name itself being defined as derogatory or insulting in modern dictionaries, and the prominence
of the team representing the nation’s capital. Should sports team branding designers use ethnic
references (Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Braves, etc.)? Why? Why not? What are some
of the complexities of this issue?
I do think that the sports team branding designers should think twice about using ethnic reference
because a lot of people are sensitive to this. Let us see the most popular team out of the pool of team is
those who build brand around something easy to say and hip to say. So I think that although the
branding will be very cool to have another meaning but it does not add complexity to the team rather
only to the name. The red skin is one example of just a name, we think about it deep we can find out
what it is but when we just hear it just like the L.A. Laker, we only think of it as a name nothing more.
Okay, so I thought the redskin was offensive but this is another level, can you imagine if that say Asian
raider? that is very offensive and will cause massive discussion.

Last year, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed into law a bill that repealed local
LGBT anti-discrimination laws, and required people to use the bathroom that corresponded
with the biological gender written on their birth certificates. This prompted massive
backlash. McCrory stated, “You know, we all have to make adjustments in life. And we’ve
had the proper etiquette situation for decades in our country, and all of a sudden through
political correctness we’re throwing away basic etiquette.” Just this past Thursday, the
North Carolina General Assembly passed a bill to repeal the law while placing a
moratorium on nondiscrimination measures.
I read the news about the store in North Carolina, I think it is target that is now putting signs that
prevent transgender to use the other bathroom and I think that that is not all that bad of idea but it
does make lot of people not happy. First off I know why people are very cautious, when a male is
a transgender and he go into a female’s bathroom but still looks like a man, even though he may
say that he is transgender but it will still make many people uncomfortable and therefore that is
one problem but I think it is mainly to prevent perverts from taking advantage of situations. Now
obviously we know why we are for passing laws to ban the discrimination because it does really
affect people. Many people are born and feel like they are trap in the wrong body and this issue is
very hard for them. If I was a designer, I will solve this Gender Dilemma by making all bathrooms
have doors that are not peek through. Lot of bathroom door have holes and you can see through
them and lot of bathroom have stand up stall for men that do not have any cover. I will put cover
and improve the design for the doors to make it safer and that way people won’t have a chance to
be pervert. I think that is a good idea, but I feel like that will be the same outrage like the
handicap bathroom. They got mad because it is labeling but soon they find that it is so handy
and stop get mad this can be a big boost,

Gender- In their chapter “Communicating Gender,” Maya Ganesh and Gabi Sobliye
discuss two primary visual advocacy approaches: 1) get the idea, and 2) stories in data.
Find a new example of either of the two visual advocacy approaches to gender issues,
and post it in this thread
First, identify the approach. Then explain how the designer uses the approach to
communicate a gender issue. Is the approach effective in this example? Why or why not?
How could this graphic be improved?
The designer for my visual advocacy gives off a sensitive approach it provides information
about abuse information and many things that give the gender issue a more serious and hard
approach. I think it is very effective because people want to see evidence and when people
see this colorful information filled design they will like to do something about it and it is
effective in getting information across. This graphic is very limited because of the color I
think we can change font size and make color more not harsh. Also this photo has nothing
but negative so it is very silly when people do not like to approach themselves with negative
thing and give off bad vibe. I got this photo off of http://www.transstudent.org/tdov and this
is a very adult orientated picture

After almost two decades of public assistance, Tammy Crabtree took herself and her family
off the welfare rolls. But her job cleaning bathrooms at a local Burger King barely paid the
bills. Crabtree wanted to do better and hopes to go to college and become a teacher.
Imagine this scenario. You are a designer who works at the well-known firm, iPD (Integrated
Planning and Design). You work on a team with planners, urban designers, policy designers,
architects, and social designers. You have been tasked to develop/design a way for Tammy
Crabtree and her family (and others with situations similar to Tammy’s) to move themselves
out of poverty. What will your team to do to help Tammy and her family achieve their goals?
What approach will your team take to address this difficult problem?
You see this is not a topic that is very hard for us student to Answer. I like to start this thread off by
saying that if it is so simple for us students to give an answer than their will be no one living in
poverty and living in poor condition. However, for the sake of getting good score on this
discussion it is my job to give a good talk about this matter. Okay so now I am a well-known
designer for a IPD firm and now I have to think of a way for someone to live better when living on
minimum wage. There is lot of poor people in China and in my city in China the poor people still
get by and how do they do that? They spend all the money on the child and they eat at work and let
the child get chance at success. But in the U.S. I see less of that so what I can design is for the
government to plan a small living apartment made up with many small rooms enough for a family of
3-4 not going to let them live comfortably but it will put stress off of their payment for month to
month. They will have a shared laundry area so they pay less electric and gas bill and this will put
jobs on table. If they go to first floor they will have a dollar store so they can get what they need.
This way I think they can save money like 500$ a month and soon be able to plan their life better.

“(Re)forming Regent Park: When Policy Does Not Equal Practice”
The development of Regent Park is phased, and there are several more phases to the
project. What actions could be taken to ensure more social integration for the older
people living in the ‘new and improved’ Regent Park?
Old people retirement place is a place where old people are sent to and it is not a fun place
to be. It is very boring and people think of it as the place you go to die. It is very cold and
solidarity space because old people who go there know that their family have no time to
take care of them and some of them know that they will stay there till they die. What is
some way to make them less miserable? I think we need to improve fun and interactive
subjects of the regent park because it is impossible for human to not socialize, there should
be more program to help the regent park residents to converse more and there should be
more than just care takers, they should open the park by making the building more fun so
people will go, this way the old people can talk with people who are visiting park and some
time it is fun to just see young people and new faces. They can take actions and add more
mini game, in China the retirement resident homes are not that popular but it does exist and
it is very ugly building, we can make it more attractive too.
For sure, I think that by taking away loom and gloom will do good but what is a way for
that to happen? No one want to go to regent parks

“What Will Humans Look Like in 100 Years?”
Enriquez argues that, because of advances in bio-medical technology, the possibility of
living to 120 years of age and beyond is quite possible for many of us in this D+D class.
Assuming that his assertion is accurate, how do you think extended life spans will
change our societies and built environments? What new issues might designers face
because of extended life spans?
The largest problem with the extension of human life is space, life is being born fast than the
life being die. So it is very dangerous for people to live that long because everyone takes up
space and food. There is a limit to how much space is livable and with each space that is
used for living extra space is needed for waste. Assuming that the assertion is accurate, it is
going to change our environment for the with extra old people there will be a limit to where
they can live. As designer we will have to see if they can handle to live by themselves and
we must design buildings that will let them be able to move around. Not everyone is money
made so the old people who cannot afford a service agent to watch over them will probably
have hard time moving around a regular house so we need to design a bigger old people
home
That is very true, Over population is a huge problem because it also demands more food.
There is already an overfishing problem in the world and soon enough there won’t be
enough in the water to feed every people and we design can not only be house but also space for growing more food without do
damage to soil.

The two most frequently mentioned models of disability are the ‘social’ and the ‘medical’
models. The medical model of disability views disability as a medical ‘problem’ that
belongs to the disabled individual. The social model of disability, in contrast, draws on
the idea that it is society that disables people, through designing everything to meet the
needs of the majority of people who are not disabled. There is a recognition within the
social model that there is a great deal that society can do to reduce, and ultimately
remove, some of these disabling barriers, and that this task is the responsibility of society,
rather than the disabled person.
the principle I will choose is the low physical effort and the example I am giving is the engine
of car because of this design and the part working together universally we do not have to walk
and therefore save lot of effort and it will empower people to travel more and it is a
positive way to save time. This can be improved by making it have technology because it is
still effort for us to drive and concentrate so if it can auto drive than it can be improve
My next picture does not serve same purpose but it also saves physical energy and it is around
long time and it can help people stay drive and stay away from the sun light without them
having to use umbrella or to cover their head with stuff. This can be improving if they can
accommodate more people because this is only matter of space and not all people can fit into
this one. This is not an engine but an artfully design roof that is perfect for keeping you dry.

FIXED, and Stelarc
Currently, we have the technology for you to choose many of the survey characteristics
in your future child, and this ability to choose poses some ethical questions. Of course,
we all want the best for our own child. However, as we move into a more collective
situation, we need to consider how the consequences of majority choices for children
might change who we are as a species. What lessons do you think we should learn from
history when thinking about emerging enhancement technologies and reproductive
technologies? What are some of the possible consequences (both positive and negative) of
being able to design our bodies and the bodies of our children? What ethical quandaries
do these technologies pose?
One of my friend introduce me to film call Gattaca I think that is how you spell that. The
movie talks about how there are super human born from genetic modification and those who
choose to have child born naturally and let god decide are all discriminated again set because
they are so physically and mentally inferior. A lesson that we should learn from history is that
it is very important to not have everything be the same. When you think about why place have
famine and are hungry it is because all crop is same. Just one disease can kill everything and
so it is important to have variation. With reproduction technology it is good because we can
mass produce and everything is same and if the same is good quality but because of this there
is no difference. The ethical part is that you are interfering with nature is that ethical you are
changing your kid because you want something else? too me it is not what do you think?
When the babies are given the choice do you think they will not want to be
perfect? Or better? I think I will rather be modified than to be born with diseases?

Hats as Communication Design
Typically, we do not think of hats as elements of mass media or social media.
However, the two hats (red and pink) discussed in the articles certainly have
taken on that role. Why are the two hats (red and pink) mentioned in the
articles vehicles of communication design? What meanings do each of the two
hats carry? In terms of communication design, how are they similar? And how
are they different from one another?
When I see this all I can think about is Donald trump and his big red hat. I think he
use that hat to cover up his bad hair and that it is a symbol of normal people. He is
not using the hat to make people think of him as rich and entitle like Hilary hat but
he uses it to spread a message and using his hat to communicate that we are all just
like you. The hat also says make America great again, thus when I buy the hat
people make fun of me when I wear it so what he wants the message to be and what
people want to be is totally different. Please let me know what you guys think!
I total agree with how you explained what Trump wanted his hat to symbolize and it
is that he is trying to convey a point with a simple tucker hat to show that he is with
the people
(I have to save Trump for last)

The state of Massachusetts tried to ban the 1967 documentary Titicut Follies,
arguing that director Frederick Wiseman had violated the patients’ rights by not
getting written permission to film them. The case went to court, and Wiseman
argued that he had consent from their legal guardian, the institution. After a
judge ruled in favor of the state, the legal appeals carried on for several years: in
1969, Massachusetts allowed the film to be shown to doctors, lawyers, and health
care professionals; in 1991, a superior court judge ruled it could be released for
the “general public,” as privacy concerns were no longer at issue, so many years
later.
Should Wiseman have been allowed to film the residents of Bridgewater
Massachusetts Correctional Facility? Why or why not? How might this film be of
value to designers (communication designers, product, designers, architects,
interior designers, planners, landscape designers, systems designers, and/or social
designers)? In other words, what might they gain from this film that they could
use in their work?
I think this film really show the possibility of our view on how correction Facility
work. I think that before everyone think it is a scary dark place and this is not to say
that it is not but it shows us that we are able to do much more. I do think that
Wiseman should be allowed because this shows us how resident will live and how
they get in or get out. It is always good for people like designer to gain knowledge and
use it in their works. Personally if I were to watch this film than someone say to
design a correction facility I will have a vague idea of what I want to do and not do. It
is always videos that get people to view and not paper so it is a good value for the film
to be made and it is shown how professionals work under the byproduct of filming.

Prelude: Wolf Wolfensberger's seminal work "The Origin and Nature of Our Institutional
Models" posited that society characterizes people with intellectual disabilities as sub-human
and burdens of charity, He argued that this dehumanization, and the segregated institutions
that result from it, ignored the potential productive contributions that all people can make to
society. He pushed for a shift in policy and practice that recognized the human needs of those
with intellectual challenges and provided the same basic human rights as for the rest of the
population.
What are some possible solutions that would allow the residents of the home to be provided with
“the same basic human rights as the rest of the population”?
Is there anyone who would agree to this proposal? If there is anyone who will agree feel free to
move in by yourself because I will complain every day to the town officials and will do everything I
can to not let them build, there because it is not fair for me to have to live in a neighborhood with
people that are not able to properly be normal. I do not mind living next to a neighborhood with
many disables or those who are slow but the examples you give is not helping me do a good job at
being human because this is not fair I have rights I buy expensive house I should live happy in my
expensive house. I will probably find out who the 3 people that voted no and ask why they would
vote no. is it something to do with them being nice or just dumb?
There is no solution to be fair in this scenario it is a either me or them situation.

In his article, David Engwicht discusses the fact that religions have played major roles in the
development of our cities. Today, places of worship are primary components of almost all
urban centers. Author Lorne Daniel writes “From their often active role in supporting
people who live in city centers to their iconic influence on design and use of space, religious
structures tell us a lot about our history, our current needs, and where we might be headed
in the future. This is an aspect of our urban future that planners and urbanists should
attend to.”
Identify a place of worship with which you are somewhat familiar. What roles has this place
served in the development of your city/town? How has it influenced the design of the area
around it? How has its role changed over time? What roles could this place of worship play
in the future development of your city/town?
I remember when my dad and mom take me to the communist monument in China and it
was one of the first ever monument. It plays the role to serve as a reminder for people that
the communist party fought hard and finally won the country it's long deserved freedom and
till this day lot of grandma and grandpa still go and worship this holy ground. The role has
not changed in over 30 years and it is mostly because this happen so recently and
generations has not changed that much yet but it will for sure be an historical symbol and
will be treasured even more because with the current generation we all were taught by the
Chinese government to love the founders. This serve as an influencer, it makes people think
we been through tough time and got through it, we can do it again so I think it is very
important. I know this is not a religion but it is so close because people worship this party.

At the beginning of this course, we discussed the idea that we are all designers regardless of
our profession or field of study. We’ve asked some big questions along the way, and the
conclusion section of our textbook raises additional issues that require input from people who
might not consider themselves to be part of the formalized design professions.
Think about your own major and/or future profession. What is the biggest challenge, problem,
or question that your field needs to tackle right now? What do you plan to do to address this
challenge, problem, or question either as part of your studies or professional life?
I am in Economics major and the biggest challenge is probably finding the job that suits my
personality. I feel like as long as you can get into a company that is what you want to do for the
rest of your life it would be amazing, but because this is such a competitive field the hardest
part is to hunt down that perfect job. In order to tackle this challenge, I have to find out
information of company I want work for and hopefully grow my skills and knowledge that
allows me to play apart in the company’s success and they will want to hire someone that
shares same goal and vision as well as produce contributions. I plan to challenge myself and
challenge the way I interact, I am very shy when speaking English and there is a class where I
froze because I was so nervous. I want to tackle that and hopefully find my dream job.
we are in the same pool; I think that finding the job is the hardest because there is limited job slot
but a lot of us.
How can we stand out to job interviewers?

ARC 211: American Diversity and Design: Shiqiang Shao

  • 1. University at Buffalo- State University of New York Arc 211-American Diversity and Design Discussion Shiqiang Shao Spring 2017 Project Number2-3
  • 3. My Name Is Shiqiang Shao, I am currently taking ARC 211 because my dad wants me to have some knowledge about Architecture. My discussions have been based off my own opinion and I try to answer them with love so people can have fun read my paper and not think that I just say things to make get grade. Although getting an A in this class will be super beneficial to me and I hope that my discussions and the questions that I give is helpful to someone. I thought that the many TED talk videos were extremely compelling and the little something you add in class is beneficial. My meets in this class are sometimes diluted by the fact that there are many instances where the discussion questions are too difficult.

  • 5. Hidden Consequences, Flaws of Design! The editors state that “diverse participation in the design process, from both professionals and public citizens alike, yields more equitable results.” This makes sense, but typically has not been the case. Nonetheless, many marginalized groups have impacted design in ways that have changed our visual and physical worlds as well as our systems, policies, and institutions. For example, in the 1960s, disability rights advocates designed media events to raise awareness about barriers in the physical environment. They persisted with their efforts for decades, and, finally, in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act became law. It mandated accessibility in public accommodations such as restaurants and stores, public transportation, communication, and other areas of public life. This dramatically changed our physical environment Now it’s your turn. Describe a design that was impacted by a diversity group. How and why did it change form and/or circumstances? (Note that a design can be anything requiring planning and development prior to the production of an action, system, visual, material object, or environment. Also, keep in mind that, for our purposes, a diversity group is a group of individuals who are underrepresented in society in some way—children, older adults, the economically disadvantaged, those with cognitive disabilities, etc.) After reading all these comments regarding the Obama care system, I don't have the choice to use that so I am very curious as to what it is. I did a little research and it is very similar to the insurance the school provide me, but it is so much cheaper! Is health insurance really for the benefit of the people? Does it really help society move forward, I feel like when people really do need medical help they do not get it and often time miss interpreted and those with money don’t pay nearly enough to support those who do not have the needs to pay their own bills. Forcing people to buy insurance is one of the most corrupted system implemented by the law and that is really only to extort money out of the people. How many times have someone damage your car and ran away, you are scared to call insurance because they will increase the premium? This is so bad how they force people to get insurance to squeeze out every possible penny. https://consequenceofsound.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/screen-shot-2016-09-29-at-4-25-56-pm.png?w=807
  • 6. “What is design?” from Hello World: Where Design Meets Life by Alice Rawsthron For this discussion, let’s move away from 246 B.C. China, and into the U.S. Describe an innovation or invention (can be current or historical) that gave advantage to a group of people in the U.S. or to the population as a whole. What were the social impacts of this innovation? Were any groups negatively impacted by this innovation? For example, the telegraph, developed and patented in the United States in 1837 by Samuel Morse, permitted people and commerce to transmit messages across both continents and oceans almost instantly, with widespread social and economic impacts. This heightened communication speed allowed business persons to make decisions with up-to-date information, often resulting in big profits. Those without access had to rely on outdated information, which put them at a disadvantage Why do you think it take so long for people to invent it? It most has been possible before because they have round pots so they must of see it rolled before. The definition of Design is something out of one’s perception of the world. The world is a design, that is why I thought the name of the article hello world to be so interesting! The dictionary definition of Design is " a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other object before it is built or made." I would say that the world wide web is one of the designs that made the world turn forward instead of anything else. This is something that we should all take a look for, think about it, how would we be doing this assignment without the web? This is an advantage and this is a way communication that is heightened beyond belief. I feel like with efficient power plants comes the problem with more and more people relying on man natural resources as its most useful source of energy. That is not exactly the foot in right direction because people are not using their brains to come up with more natural way of producing energy. https://www.canva.com/templates/social-graphics/MAB_ajIqclg-hello-world-creative-instagram-post/
  • 7. Media/Society and TED Talk Photos that Changed the World Where would you place the images shown in Photos That Changed the World into Croteau and Hoynes' diagram entitled “Model of Media and the Social World”? Identify a mass media photograph taken in your own lifetime that has served as an icon of an event. I would place those under the media message since photos are something that is dying out. We do not want to admit it but it is slowly but surely dying. People are getting bored with photos and that is why people are inventing moving images as profile pictures. Facebook for example has movie profile picture over regular profile picture, this proves that people are trying to move away from the age of photography, soon enough it will be art like painting and drawings. Maybe later pictures will be worth more because they do say that a picture is worth millions of words. Once people get the idea of something it will set and become an Icon. Like NASA first man on moon that become a very popular icon for America achievements. I agree, when photos show the harsh reality, how are we supposed to believe that? Photos are something that is used widely to spread false hope and ideas so I think that it is like you say awful times get shown but we do not trust it and so we do not do much. http://www.earthporm.com/arizona-mother-10-takes-magical-portraits-kids-outdoors/
  • 8. IDEA Awards and Cradle-to-Cradle Which of the 2016 IDEA Gold Award products seems to defy the Cradle-to- Cradle concept developed by architect William McDonough and chemist Dr. Michael Braungart? How does this product resist or disregard the concept? Please provide your own example of a product that uses Cradle-to-Cradle design. Describe and cite sources Now more than ever we need to be hard on the companies that make products to respect the cradle to cradle design. Our planet is changing and it is not before soon that we run out of important recourses. A device on the IDEA that I think does regard the cradle to cradle design at all and that is because the galaxy s 6 edge is the most wasteful device. It is not only very bad in battery life and therefore you have to charge it more than other phones, you also have to switch the galaxy faster than any other phone because of how easy it is to crack a screen like the galaxy. The devices rarely get traded in because of how little their value is and that it is simply unbearable when it comes to its battery overheating and blowing up and the weird screens. It is not environment friendly but it really doesn't follow the cradle to cradle concept simply because of how fast they pump out new devices making the older generations obsolete. I think League of legend follows the cradle to cradle design pretty well, it is a game that constantly updates and is free, this way people don't have to go out and buy new games and sooner or later company won't waste resources to create games that needs a physical copy's. (League of legend is an online game) everyone has a PC somewhere so it is a very environmentally friendly game. http://www.mcdonough.com/
  • 9. “Industrial Design” by John Heskett and "The Incredible Inventions of Intuitive AI" by Maurice Conti In his chapter on industrial design (written in 1987), historian John Heskett claims that the methods of mass production introduced by Henry Ford in the U.S. involved new concepts of the standardization and integration of the production line that were adopted across the world. With Ford’s method, work could be completed by relatively unskilled workers; it was more efficient and with this method, products were made more quickly and cheaply than previously possible. What were some of the social consequences of Ford’s production line? I believe that the biggest social consequence Ford's production line had on U.S society was the automobile becoming the most popular form of transportation. Before Ford began using the production line in factories, cars were very expensive so only incredibly wealthy people could afford them. The production line made the cost to make an automobile much cheaper, making it possible for the common man to purchase a car. I also believe over the next twenty years we as a society will continue to see an increase in machines replacing the unskilled worker for labor. As a result, people will have to be even more specialized when it comes to job training and school. I think that it’s not because of society changing that we are choosing different jobs but rather because we think of ourselves as privileged and too good for some jobs. No one is expecting to pay over 50,000$ in fees to attend college and coming out with 7-10$ an hour jobs, it is just not logic. So I think the factory process did not really impact it. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/228346643578872260/
  • 10. Ballantyne and Zumthor Andrew Ballantyne and Peter Zumthor present ideas about architecture that seem to value the sensorial and material elements of life. How are Ballantyne’s and Zumthor’s viewpoints on architecture alike? More importantly, how do they differ? This is very strait forward, as because both Peter Zumthor and Ballantyne believe in similar things and that they both study architecture in the highest level. Both Zumthor and Ballantyne think that a building should reflect culture, it should reflect time and the high light of people. It should have a meaning to people and that the building should be special to those around it. That is what they both believe, but when it comes to differences it is pretty big too. Ballantyne thinks that Old Structures, old church building and ancient structures such as temples and arena was his main focal point and this is extreme difference to the Zumthors modernist look. Zumthor believes that even if you use very good material, if the structure does not feel good to live in than it is useless. He looks at modern building with the opinion of improve and petrification. This is what they differ in and this is how they value buildings in the elements of life. That must be the great wall of China, it is the only structure that make me go. Wow that is big. I am a big guy so that is not something I think very often. But I think a better question is, what is the first structure to make you relate to yourself? https://www.pinterest.com/egonzlezfernnde/arq/
  • 11. Pruitt Igoe Project, Talen, and Larson Imagine that you are part of an urban planning and design firm working with Emily Talen (author of “Design That Enables Diversity”) and Kent Larson (who gave the TED Talk "Brilliant Designs to Fit More People In Every City" The thee of you have been tasked with developing a plan to rebuild Pruitt Igoe in St. Louis. City officials told the three of you that that they want to do it right this time. Identify three strategies for rebuilding Pruitt Igoe in ways that promise to be more successful. What would Talen do? What would Larson do? What would you do? How would your strategies differ from those of the original urban planners/designers of the project? Why would your strategies be more effective? We will not be like Pruitt Igoe failed to create something good because he is stupid, truly stupid. He is Bad! I promise I will make a better structure and better apartments for the people, we will build big walls to protect ourselves and keeping out others. We will. Now think about what the problem is with Pruitts design, it was very bad, truly horrendous. Why it was bad because it did not have much light natural light that will give the place more essence. It Did not have any technology and it was very poor diversify. Telen say that there is lack of diversity, I love diversity and I think Diversity is wonderful but they lacked diversity. Very stupid, its horrendous I would have more diversity by putting ads and showing people the place. Everyone should love each other and accept their counterparts, there should not be hate it should be communities first. We need to keep communities first if we want to design somethings good, we need great designs, the task is tremendous it really is, we will make the buildings big, bigger than ever, it will be great. The design before had too little rooms and too little space people feel disgusting and crowd so we will design the opposite. Truly wonderful idea that Lardon came up with is technology, he is smart very smart. His idea is fantastic build structure and put great technology and fun into it, it’s going to be amazing. To say that they destroy building because of crime, that's wrong, that’s stupid. The real idea is the cause for the crime rate, it’s horrible, so with wonderful natural lights, big walls, great technology, closer malls with affordable products, diversity in community, and bigger buildings surrounded in a big wonderful wall. I think we can make our design great, we can make our community great again. Sorry I think I have much of fun. https://www.pinterest.com/coadesign/vintage/ (This was the funny one I try to do, because this topic was too dark)
  • 12. F.L. Olmsted Frederick Law Olmsted stated that "Buffalo is the best planned city, as to its streets, public places, and grounds, in the United States, if not in the world." What was the basis for this claim? Would Olmsted still make that claim today? Why or why not? In the Upper side of New York, it was actually very different from what it is now. For example, now when you think New York you think New York city. When People say New York people will think of Queen, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island not a lot of people will think about Buffalo. But Before Olmsted was planning the street and public spaces including playgrounds for Buffalo because it was the city to be in. For example, before people say New York and Buffalo will come to mind, the industry and factory was very successful here and people want to come here for job and so more and more people come. I think at that time the claim of it being the best might not be not true but now it is so not true. It is very unfortunate because the glory it once had is no longer here now it is dead in the area, Olmsted would not make the claim today because if he had saw what it has become he know he make wrong choice and mistake. The Buffalo area does have impeccable design but it is no more of what it is before today, walking distance is not possible in buffalo. Exactly, from that time period sure Buffalo may be the most renowned city with its booming industries and advance factory. But that is no more, the Olmsted that created the city’s planning today would not have made it this way since cities like Dubai is far better. What do you think UB would have looked like if Olmsted planned it? Will it have more parking or more trees? https://tclf.org/pioneer/olmsted-olmsted-eliot
  • 13. Walter Hood's Work Identify something that should be memorialized either on UB's campus or in your hometown. Imagine that you are the person who will oversee this project, and that you are using Walter Hood's 'triad of investigations' as your approach to the project. What would your landscape intervention commemorate/memorialize? How will you use Hood's 'triad of investigations' to design a new landscape intervention? What do you imagine that the design will be? (Either written or visual descriptions are acceptable). This is very easy for me to choose, the great wall of China is without a doubt the most memorable structure and landscape to me. When I think how hard it is for people to build tall building today even with all the machine and big technology compared to back than where they have hands and stone tools. I think this is very hard to imagine because people now cannot live in a place with stone tools. The Wall were built to protect the country and it served as a power symbol and so when I look at the structure I feel proud and I think landscape is memorialized. It symbolizes the millions of people who die to work for the wall, making sure it is up and now it is the largest structure made. Triad investigation would make the great wall of china the greatest symbol of power and China at its prime state. I think that the wall idea is severely different now, because Trump really put a new meaning into the word wall. What would be complex enough so that a wall will be remember even if you are not there to witness it
  • 14. https://ced.berkeley.edu/ced/faculty-staff/walter-hood Charles Davis and equityXdesign' Critique either the MLK Memorial or the National Museum of African American History and Culture using equity X design’s core beliefs and/or design principles. (Use the beliefs or principles that are most relevant to your critique rather than all of them The MLK memorial is a large closed off area where people can go and visit King for all of his good doing for the equality of African American and many others in the United States. I think using the EquityXdeisgn core belief this memorial would be unsatisfactory. Not only is the statue very stern and mad looking the color is different. I think that they should do a better job make the statue look more like king. Kings benevolence and kindness along with his nonviolent protest made him the icon and role model that he is today so the statue that is use to symbolize King does not represent someone of that degree. King should have been depicted nicer and kind I have never seen the National museum of African American History and culture, what is the process that obstruct senator? Is it the culture? http://www.payette.com/post/3201534-payette-people-at-aia-convention-2016
  • 15. "Landscape Stories" First, let’s start with your own home. Describe a place in your home (indoors and/or outdoors) that you think of as representative of your own ethnic background and discuss why you consider this place to be ‘ethnic’. –OR-- Describe an object in your home that you think of as representative of your ethnic background and discuss why this object is considered to be ‘ethnic’. (If possible, add photo/s.) Is this object or place something that you will keep or continue when you establish your own home? Why or why not? In my house hold we have object like ash of our ancestor and some figure of Chinese god, we keep that as a respect to the people who create this family and to the god that make our country very properness. I think that I will not continue that tradition because when I was raise in China we don't really have that in our house for long time, when my grand mom die we do not really clean up the ash area and change fruits. I think this is a good representation of China because before our country is very poor and do not have much so we try to cherish what we have and because of that we will always look ahead. But now that time has changed and we really do not have the time to think about the past thing so that it is very important that we can move past the tradition that does not benefit time. Now the community I was raise has lot of drinking place and small snack I think that now that tradition is change because of law, the law says that after that day no one can have food stall because it is not clean so they have law to prohibit the thing that make our town special. That is what I think that the government do not care about the preservation for future kid. I also have that picture all over my house, sometime I ask myself why that word is upside down. Do you know why? http://www.copyrightbookshop.be/en/books/details/12312/6
  • 16. Sports Branding Recent controversies about sports branding focus on ethnicity. The Washington Redskins team is just one example of the larger controversy, but it receives the most public attention due to the name itself being defined as derogatory or insulting in modern dictionaries, and the prominence of the team representing the nation’s capital. Should sports team branding designers use ethnic references (Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Braves, etc.)? Why? Why not? What are some of the complexities of this issue? I do think that the sports team branding designers should think twice about using ethnic reference because a lot of people are sensitive to this. Let us see the most popular team out of the pool of team is those who build brand around something easy to say and hip to say. So I think that although the branding will be very cool to have another meaning but it does not add complexity to the team rather only to the name. The red skin is one example of just a name, we think about it deep we can find out what it is but when we just hear it just like the L.A. Laker, we only think of it as a name nothing more. Okay, so I thought the redskin was offensive but this is another level, can you imagine if that say Asian raider? that is very offensive and will cause massive discussion. http://www.peta.org/blog/no-need-for-redskins-to-change-name-says-peta/
  • 17. Last year, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed into law a bill that repealed local LGBT anti-discrimination laws, and required people to use the bathroom that corresponded with the biological gender written on their birth certificates. This prompted massive backlash. McCrory stated, “You know, we all have to make adjustments in life. And we’ve had the proper etiquette situation for decades in our country, and all of a sudden through political correctness we’re throwing away basic etiquette.” Just this past Thursday, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a bill to repeal the law while placing a moratorium on nondiscrimination measures. I read the news about the store in North Carolina, I think it is target that is now putting signs that prevent transgender to use the other bathroom and I think that that is not all that bad of idea but it does make lot of people not happy. First off I know why people are very cautious, when a male is a transgender and he go into a female’s bathroom but still looks like a man, even though he may say that he is transgender but it will still make many people uncomfortable and therefore that is one problem but I think it is mainly to prevent perverts from taking advantage of situations. Now obviously we know why we are for passing laws to ban the discrimination because it does really affect people. Many people are born and feel like they are trap in the wrong body and this issue is very hard for them. If I was a designer, I will solve this Gender Dilemma by making all bathrooms have doors that are not peek through. Lot of bathroom door have holes and you can see through them and lot of bathroom have stand up stall for men that do not have any cover. I will put cover and improve the design for the doors to make it safer and that way people won’t have a chance to be pervert. I think that is a good idea, but I feel like that will be the same outrage like the handicap bathroom. They got mad because it is labeling but soon they find that it is so handy and stop get mad this can be a big boost, https://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional/bathroom
  • 18. Gender- In their chapter “Communicating Gender,” Maya Ganesh and Gabi Sobliye discuss two primary visual advocacy approaches: 1) get the idea, and 2) stories in data. Find a new example of either of the two visual advocacy approaches to gender issues, and post it in this thread First, identify the approach. Then explain how the designer uses the approach to communicate a gender issue. Is the approach effective in this example? Why or why not? How could this graphic be improved? The designer for my visual advocacy gives off a sensitive approach it provides information about abuse information and many things that give the gender issue a more serious and hard approach. I think it is very effective because people want to see evidence and when people see this colorful information filled design they will like to do something about it and it is effective in getting information across. This graphic is very limited because of the color I think we can change font size and make color more not harsh. Also this photo has nothing but negative so it is very silly when people do not like to approach themselves with negative thing and give off bad vibe. I got this photo off of http://www.transstudent.org/tdov and this is a very adult orientated picture https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Symbols-Venus-Mars-joined-together.png
  • 19. After almost two decades of public assistance, Tammy Crabtree took herself and her family off the welfare rolls. But her job cleaning bathrooms at a local Burger King barely paid the bills. Crabtree wanted to do better and hopes to go to college and become a teacher. Imagine this scenario. You are a designer who works at the well-known firm, iPD (Integrated Planning and Design). You work on a team with planners, urban designers, policy designers, architects, and social designers. You have been tasked to develop/design a way for Tammy Crabtree and her family (and others with situations similar to Tammy’s) to move themselves out of poverty. What will your team to do to help Tammy and her family achieve their goals? What approach will your team take to address this difficult problem? You see this is not a topic that is very hard for us student to Answer. I like to start this thread off by saying that if it is so simple for us students to give an answer than their will be no one living in poverty and living in poor condition. However, for the sake of getting good score on this discussion it is my job to give a good talk about this matter. Okay so now I am a well-known designer for a IPD firm and now I have to think of a way for someone to live better when living on minimum wage. There is lot of poor people in China and in my city in China the poor people still get by and how do they do that? They spend all the money on the child and they eat at work and let the child get chance at success. But in the U.S. I see less of that so what I can design is for the government to plan a small living apartment made up with many small rooms enough for a family of 3-4 not going to let them live comfortably but it will put stress off of their payment for month to month. They will have a shared laundry area so they pay less electric and gas bill and this will put jobs on table. If they go to first floor they will have a dollar store so they can get what they need. This way I think they can save money like 500$ a month and soon be able to plan their life better. https://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?145902

What actions could be taken to ensure more social integration for the older people living in the ‘new and improved’ Regent Park? Old people retirement place is a place where old people are sent to and it is not a fun place to be. It is very boring and people think of it as the place you go to die. It is very cold and solidarity space because old people who go there know that their family have no time to take care of them and some of them know that they will stay there till they die. What is some way to make them less miserable? I think we need to improve fun and interactive subjects of the regent park because it is impossible for human to not socialize, there should be more program to help the regent park residents to converse more and there should be more than just care takers, they should open the park by making the building more fun so people will go, this way the old people can talk with people who are visiting park and some time it is fun to just see young people and new faces. They can take actions and add more mini game, in China the retirement resident homes are not that popular but it does exist and it is very ugly building, we can make it more attractive too. For sure, I think that by taking away loom and gloom will do good but what is a way for that to happen? No one want to go to regent parks https://www.google.com/search?q=regent+park&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS711US711&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiP rY-q4dLTAhXGNiYKHbGXAAYQ_AUICCgD&biw=1588&bih=931#imgrc=lMKg45oKxg9pJM:

Assuming that his assertion is accurate, how do you think extended life spans will change our societies and built environments? What new issues might designers face because of extended life spans? The largest problem with the extension of human life is space, life is being born fast than the life being die. So it is very dangerous for people to live that long because everyone takes up space and food. There is a limit to how much space is livable and with each space that is used for living extra space is needed for waste. Assuming that the assertion is accurate, it is going to change our environment for the with extra old people there will be a limit to where they can live. As designer we will have to see if they can handle to live by themselves and we must design buildings that will let them be able to move around. Not everyone is money made so the old people who cannot afford a service agent to watch over them will probably have hard time moving around a regular house so we need to design a bigger old people home That is very true, Over population is a huge problem because it also demands more food. There is already an overfishing problem in the world and soon enough there won’t be enough in the water to feed every people and we design can not only be house but also space for growing more food without do damage to soil. http://www.trueactivist.com/this-is-what-americans-will-look-like-by-2050-and-its-stunning/

The medical model of disability views disability as a medical ‘problem’ that belongs to the disabled individual. The social model of disability, in contrast, draws on the idea that it is society that disables people, through designing everything to meet the needs of the majority of people who are not disabled. There is a recognition within the social model that there is a great deal that society can do to reduce, and ultimately remove, some of these disabling barriers, and that this task is the responsibility of society, rather than the disabled person. the principle I will choose is the low physical effort and the example I am giving is the engine of car because of this design and the part working together universally we do not have to walk and therefore save lot of effort and it will empower people to travel more and it is a positive way to save time. This can be improved by making it have technology because it is still effort for us to drive and concentrate so if it can auto drive than it can be improve My next picture does not serve same purpose but it also saves physical energy and it is around long time and it can help people stay drive and stay away from the sun light without them having to use umbrella or to cover their head with stuff. This can be improving if they can accommodate more people because this is only matter of space and not all people can fit into this one. This is not an engine but an artfully design roof that is perfect for keeping you dry. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/forgotten-black-women-mathematicians-who-helped-win-wars-and-send-astronauts-space- 180960393/

Of course, we all want the best for our own child. However, as we move into a more collective situation, we need to consider how the consequences of majority choices for children might change who we are as a species. What lessons do you think we should learn from history when thinking about emerging enhancement technologies and reproductive technologies? What are some of the possible consequences (both positive and negative) of being able to design our bodies and the bodies of our children? What ethical quandaries do these technologies pose? One of my friend introduce me to film call Gattaca I think that is how you spell that. The movie talks about how there are super human born from genetic modification and those who choose to have child born naturally and let god decide are all discriminated again set because they are so physically and mentally inferior. A lesson that we should learn from history is that it is very important to not have everything be the same. When you think about why place have famine and are hungry it is because all crop is same. Just one disease can kill everything and so it is important to have variation. With reproduction technology it is good because we can mass produce and everything is same and if the same is good quality but because of this there is no difference. The ethical part is that you are interfering with nature is that ethical you are changing your kid because you want something else? too me it is not what do you think? When the babies are given the choice do you think they will not want to be perfect? Or better? I think I will rather be modified than to be born with diseases? http://www.femside.com/life-love/being-a-new-mom/tips-for-choosing-the-perfect-baby-swing/
  • 24. Hats as Communication Design Typically, we do not think of hats as elements of mass media or social media. However, the two hats (red and pink) discussed in the articles certainly have taken on that role. Why are the two hats (red and pink) mentioned in the articles vehicles of communication design? What meanings do each of the two hats carry? In terms of communication design, how are they similar? And how are they different from one another? When I see this all I can think about is Donald trump and his big red hat. I think he use that hat to cover up his bad hair and that it is a symbol of normal people. He is not using the hat to make people think of him as rich and entitle like Hilary hat but he uses it to spread a message and using his hat to communicate that we are all just like you. The hat also says make America great again, thus when I buy the hat people make fun of me when I wear it so what he wants the message to be and what people want to be is totally different. Please let me know what you guys think! I total agree with how you explained what Trump wanted his hat to symbolize and it is that he is trying to convey a point with a simple tucker hat to show that he is with the people (I have to save Trump for last) http://www.npr.org/sections/itsallpolitics/2015/10/30/453207497/donald-trump-spent-nearly-1-million-to-get-voters-to-wear-this-hat

The state of Massachusetts tried to ban the 1967 documentary Titicut Follies, arguing that director Frederick Wiseman had violated the patients’ rights by not getting written permission to film them. The case went to court, and Wiseman argued that he had consent from their legal guardian, the institution. After a judge ruled in favor of the state, the legal appeals carried on for several years: in 1969, Massachusetts allowed the film to be shown to doctors, lawyers, and health care professionals; in 1991, a superior court judge ruled it could be released for the “general public,” as privacy concerns were no longer at issue, so many years later. Should Wiseman have been allowed to film the residents of Bridgewater Massachusetts Correctional Facility? Why or why not? How might this film be of value to designers (communication designers, product, designers, architects, interior designers, planners, landscape designers, systems designers, and/or social designers)? In other words, what might they gain from this film that they could use in their work? I think this film really show the possibility of our view on how correction Facility work. I think that before everyone think it is a scary dark place and this is not to say that it is not but it shows us that we are able to do much more. I do think that Wiseman should be allowed because this shows us how resident will live and how they get in or get out. It is always good for people like designer to gain knowledge and use it in their works. Personally if I were to watch this film than someone say to design a correction facility I will have a vague idea of what I want to do and not do. It is always videos that get people to view and not paper so it is a good value for the film to be made and it is shown how professionals work under the byproduct of filming. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts_Department_of_Correction

Prelude: Wolf Wolfensberger's seminal work "The Origin and Nature of Our Institutional Models" posited that society characterizes people with intellectual disabilities as sub-human and burdens of charity, He argued that this dehumanization, and the segregated institutions that result from it, ignored the potential productive contributions that all people can make to society. He pushed for a shift in policy and practice that recognized the human needs of those with intellectual challenges and provided the same basic human rights as for the rest of the population. What are some possible solutions that would allow the residents of the home to be provided with “the same basic human rights as the rest of the population”? Is there anyone who would agree to this proposal? If there is anyone who will agree feel free to move in by yourself because I will complain every day to the town officials and will do everything I can to not let them build, there because it is not fair for me to have to live in a neighborhood with people that are not able to properly be normal. I do not mind living next to a neighborhood with many disables or those who are slow but the examples you give is not helping me do a good job at being human because this is not fair I have rights I buy expensive house I should live happy in my expensive house. I will probably find out who the 3 people that voted no and ask why they would vote no. is it something to do with them being nice or just dumb? There is no solution to be fair in this scenario it is a either me or them situation. https://memesuper.com/categories/view/e335f90c5fbc159a573a28c853e7fb9a2a8ccffd/crazy-neighbor-memes.html

Today, places of worship are primary components of almost all urban centers. Author Lorne Daniel writes “From their often active role in supporting people who live in city centers to their iconic influence on design and use of space, religious structures tell us a lot about our history, our current needs, and where we might be headed in the future. This is an aspect of our urban future that planners and urbanists should attend to.” Identify a place of worship with which you are somewhat familiar. What roles has this place served in the development of your city/town? How has it influenced the design of the area around it? How has its role changed over time? What roles could this place of worship play in the future development of your city/town? I remember when my dad and mom take me to the communist monument in China and it was one of the first ever monument. It plays the role to serve as a reminder for people that the communist party fought hard and finally won the country it's long deserved freedom and till this day lot of grandma and grandpa still go and worship this holy ground. The role has not changed in over 30 years and it is mostly because this happen so recently and generations has not changed that much yet but it will for sure be an historical symbol and will be treasured even more because with the current generation we all were taught by the Chinese government to love the founders. This serve as an influencer, it makes people think we been through tough time and got through it, we can do it again so I think it is very important. I know this is not a religion but it is so close because people worship this party. https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/communist-statue-monuments-china-136054736

We’ve asked some big questions along the way, and the conclusion section of our textbook raises additional issues that require input from people who might not consider themselves to be part of the formalized design professions. Think about your own major and/or future profession. What is the biggest challenge, problem, or question that your field needs to tackle right now? What do you plan to do to address this challenge, problem, or question either as part of your studies or professional life? I am in Economics major and the biggest challenge is probably finding the job that suits my personality. I feel like as long as you can get into a company that is what you want to do for the rest of your life it would be amazing, but because this is such a competitive field the hardest part is to hunt down that perfect job. In order to tackle this challenge, I have to find out information of company I want work for and hopefully grow my skills and knowledge that allows me to play apart in the company’s success and they will want to hire someone that shares same goal and vision as well as produce contributions. I plan to challenge myself and challenge the way I interact, I am very shy when speaking English and there is a class where I froze because I was so nervous. I want to tackle that and hopefully find my dream job. we are in the same pool; I think that finding the job is the hardest because there is limited job slot but a lot of us. How can we stand out to job interviewers? https://www.theodysseyonline.com/switch-major-economics
