from Hypaepa. Her father is a
wool dyer named Idmon, and her
mother is a common woman not
given a name in Ovid’s version of
the story.

3. ATHENA – Also known as Pallas
Athena and Minerva, the goddess
of wisdom, courage and
inspiration, civilization, law and
justice, warfare,
mathermatics,strength, strategy,
arts, crafts, and skills.

challenged by the proud mortal,
Arachne.
4. “ I have had much
experience, and I hope you
will not despise my
counsel. Challenge your
fellow-mortals as you will,
but do not compete with a
goddess”. -Athena
6. Arachne has become famous throughout Lydia for
her skill at weaving. She’s so good that forest
nymphs will stop their work to come and watch
her wave. Eventually all the fame goes to
Arachne’s head. She starts telling people that
she’s better at weaving than Athena, the goddess
of crafts. In fact, Arachne believes herself to be
so good that she challenges Athena to a contest.
Athena gets wind of the challenge and heads to
Lydia to talk Arachne into taking back her boast.
Arachne rages at the old woman who advises her
to show more respect to the gods. Arachne is
shocked when the old woman turns out to be
Athena in disguise, but still insist on having a
contest. After the contest Athena beats Arachne
with a wooden shuttle until the young girl hangs
herself. Athena then resurrects Arachne and
transform her into a spider.

that you should never
compare yourself to others
and that though you have a
talent you shouldn’t brag
about it or anything you
have.
