Many well fields have been developed without careful consideration
of the local hydrogeology. Groundwater moves in a predictable
manner that is governed by physics, mathematics, and chemistry.
Well field performance can be optimized when wells are designed,
installed, developed, operated, and maintained properly to ensure
that the aquifer is being managed in a sustainable and efficient
manner.
Many well field operators already continuously monitor the well
yield using flow meters. Fewer well field operators accurately
monitor the water level in the well. By monitoring both, a
hydrogeologist can perform numerous calculations to evaluate the
well efficiency, well interference, entrance velocity, and zone of
influence of multiple wells.

AQUIMETRICS™ was built to streamline and optimize well field
management by completely automating well field monitoring. The
AQUIMETRICS™ platform includes integrated hardware and software
that is offered as a turn-key service by our professional
hydrogeologists and engineers. The platform leverages the current
explosion of “internet of things” (IoT) technologies to collect, store,
and analyze real-time and continuous groundwater data.

Sensors installed in the well are used to collect information on water
level, temperature, salinity, pH, conductivity, and other groundwater
quality parameters. The data are transmitted through telemetry (e.g.
cellular network) to a database stored in the cloud. Our software uses
the data in various ways to evaluate trends and changes in the
measured parameters and what these changes mean for operational
optimization and regulatory compliance.

The end result is a “Smart” Well Field™. The wells can “talk” to each
other to evaluate what pumping rates are the most efficient for the
current water demand. By using your existing SCADA systems or
stand-alone variable frequency drives (VFDs), the AQUIMETRICS™
platform can continually be determining and selecting pumping rates
at individual wells to optimize well field performance.

AQUIMETRICS™ is a combination of software and services that enables
the user to conserve and protect our worlds groundwater aquifers by
continuously analyzing well field performance using water-level and
flow-rate data.

What is a SMART Wellfield?

Drawdown (simplified)
When a pump turns on, the water level in the
well drops, creating “drawdown”. Energy is
required to lift the water. Increased
drawdown = increased cost.
As a well deteriorates, the borehole or well
screen gets plugged, creating increased
drawdown (and more lift), thus increasing
cost.

Well Efficiency/Entrance Velocity
The presence of minerals in groundwater (iron, calcium,
magnesium, manganese, etc.) decreases the life of a well and
creates plugging issues.
Entrance velocity plays an important role in the rate and amount
of plugging that occurs in the borehole and well screen due to
mineral precipitation.
AQUIMETRICS™ quantifies and tracks the entrance velocity and
recommends safe operating ranges for each well, potentially deferring well
redevelopment or well replacement costs.

TDS Water Treatment
AQUIMETRICS™ can evaluate the geochemistry of the well field, evaluate
the optimal pumping rate to reduce water treatment, evaluate possible
blending strategies, and perform a cost-benefit analysis of new wells versus
water treatment issues.
Minerals in the aquifer, oxygen content of the water, and contact time
all affect the amount and type of dissolved solids in raw water.
Iron, manganese and magnesium are not generally health related
issues, but the staining and taste issues are major cost and
customer satisfaction problems for public water suppliers.

Siting New Wells
AQUIMETRICS™ “learns” over time, providing a scientific placement
of wells and a higher certainty of predictive effects, all at a fraction of
the cost of conventional consulting fees. AQUIMETRICS™ also could
reduce the number of new wells by maximizing each well to optimum
capacity.
New wells are necessary to meet demand driven by population and
aging wells. Proper well siting and design requires significant
hydrogeologic “study”, aquifer testing, and groundwater modeling.

AQUIMETRICS™ uses advanced hydrogeologic methods to continuously record the
effects of pumping – yours or theirs – on local and regional groundwater levels.

quantified or justified, costing money to the rights holder in lost value.
Water rights disputes have traditionally relied on groundwater models that have
assumptions and are rarely defensible.

transducers and flow meters to automate the data reduction and analysis.

Reporting and Wellhead Protection
 Water appropriations permits require reporting of water-level data.
 Wellhead Protection Plans are required for all public water providers.

AQUIMETRICS™ can be customized to automate any reporting need and develop
Wellhead Protection Areas (WHPAs) faster and more accurately than conventional
methods. A smaller WHPA will be cheaper to manage and have more favorable zoning
from a tax perspective.
Water Use Restrictions
AQUIMETRICS™ uses hydrogeologic methods to understand aquifer
response to water withdrawal under seasonal/climatic changes. Water
providers could impose water use restrictions less frequently by
deploying this technology.
Fear of lowering water tables during high demand causes well field
managers to initiate “odd-even” lawn-watering restrictions. These
restrictions are seldom based on hydrogeology and reduce revenues by
as much as 50% during periods of watering bans.

How does AQUIMETRICS™ operate?

 Entrance velocity is either calculated by dividing the open area of the
well screen by the flow rate or by the dynamic flow profile for the well
times the current flow rate.
 Well efficiency is calculated by graphing specific drawdown versus flow
rate. The aquifer head loss is calculated and the well head loss is
calculated. Well efficiency is the ratio of the two.
 Specific capacity is calculated by graphing water levels and
dividing by the flow rate at the user-defined time period.
AQUIMETRICS™ taps into an existing SCADA system and “mines”
the data necessary to perform well hydraulic and hydrogeologic
functions:
 A real-time potentiometric surface is interpolated using non-linear drift
kriging to accurately visualize the groundwater physics near an extraction
well. These potentiometric surfaces are animated over time to
demonstrate how the well field responded to pumping and recharge.
 Well interference is calculated by a complex query of the database to
evaluate when specific wells are pumping and when drawdown was
observed at other wells as a result of the pumping. A matrix of the
individual well interferences is then compiled.

 Water elevation data (pressure transducers or equivalent) and
electronic flow rate data.
 Accurate elevation data of the well casings.
 A measurement of the sensor depths for the pressure transducers.
 The ability to pump different wells at different flow rates (VFD or valve).

Increased drawdown = increased cost. As a well deteriorates, the borehole or well screen gets plugged, creating increased drawdown (and more lift), thus increasing cost. Be the aquifer.  Entrance velocity is either calculated by dividing the open area of the well screen by the flow rate or by the dynamic flow profile for the well times the current flow rate.  Well efficiency is calculated by graphing specific drawdown versus flow rate. The aquifer head loss is calculated and the well head loss is calculated. Well efficiency is the ratio of the two.  Specific capacity is calculated by graphing water levels and dividing by the flow rate at the user-defined time period. AQUIMETRICS™ taps into an existing SCADA system and “mines” the data necessary to perform well hydraulic and hydrogeologic functions:
