An idea was conceived to implement a hydroponic crop production project for disadvantaged growers in Memphis in collaboration with the University of Memphis. Since land was limited, hydroponics was identified as the best system. Growers received three training sessions on hydroponic practices and setup lettuce and squash systems with seedlings. The project closely monitored 20 trained growers through visits and calls. Squash flowers were sold for $0.60 each, generating $70-80 weekly income. Growers gained knowledge and confidence to continue the project, and lessons learned will help future projects succeed.
