As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic colleges have been forced to make an abrupt shift to remote learning, often existing in makeshift offices. Join us as we examine the challenges that this new environment presents and the lessons learned thus far from approaches developed in other UK nations and further afield.
We will share our thoughts on what leaders have learned about how to manage their institution during this difficult time and how they are addressing the challenges now and anticipating those in the future. Colleagues will be invited to join the discussion, raise questions and contribute examples from their own experience.

As with many aspects of Covid, it can be helpful to be guided by the science.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.

3. DISTANCE EDUCATION TODAY AND TOMORROW
In the last few years, distance education has become a major topic in
education. In a recent year, more than 100 professional conferences
dealt with some aspect of distance education.
Almost every professional organization’s publications and
conferences have shown a huge increase in the number of
presentations and articles related to distance education.
4. CONT’D • One indication that online courses are a regular
activity of institutions of higher education is the
role of core faculty in online instruction. There has
been a long-held belief that online courses are
taught by adjunct professors, rather that full-time
staff.
• Another indicator of the growth of online
education is the importance of this instructional
approach to the long-term strategy of the
institution.
• An online course is one where most of the
content is delivered online, which means at least
80% of the course content. A blended or hybrid
course combines online and face-to-face delivery;
thus, 30% to 79% of the course’s content is
delivered online.
5. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
• According to the 248 studies that were compiled by Russell (1999), there is no
significant difference between distance learning and traditional classroom
learning. In other words, distance learning (can be) considered as effective as
face-to-face learning, and our results support this conclusion. (Dean, Stahl,
Sylwester, & Peat, 2001, p. 252).
• The best current evidence is that media are mere vehicles that deliver instruction
but do not influence student achievement any more than the truck that delivers
our groceries causes changes in nutrition … only the content of the vehicle can
influence achievement.

• Comparative research studies on achievement tend to show no significant difference
between different delivery systems and between distance education and traditional
education … several recent studies indicate a significant higher achievement level in
those learning at a distance … the accepted position is that the delivery system affects
no inherent difference on achievement.
• Distance Education can be as effective as any other category of instruction. Learning
occurs and knowledge is retained. Students report that they have learned and that
they think their distance learning experiences are as successful as more traditional
education. The keys to successful distance education are in the design, development,
and delivery of instruction, and are not related to geography or time.
7. WHAT IS DISTANCE EDUCATION?
• Second, the term distance education has been applied to a tremendous variety of
programs serving numerous audiences via a wide variety of media. Some use
print, some use telecommunications, and many use both. Finally, rapid changes in
technology challenge the traditional ways in which distance education is defined.
• Distance education or distance learning is a mode of delivering education and
instruction, often on an individual basis, to students who are not physically
present in a traditional setting such as a classroom. Distance learning provides
"access to learning when the source of information and the learners are separated
by time and distance, or both."

• They Are Everywhere
It is fast becoming the thing for modern education. In fact, the percentage at
times of availing of these said programs outweigh the conventional ones. Modern
living is life on a fast lane, and that is quite fitting with distance education.
• They Offer Better Results
Distance education can be a surprise. The results of state exams prove that
despite being enrolled in a distance education program, students still excel
compared to their classroom counterparts.

• They’re Perfect for Adults
A significant number of senior students are doing well with distance
education. And besides, this makes for easy access on education since older
students are working most of the time.
• They are Cheaper (not with fees)
Yes, distance education is cheaper than the conventional one. The amount of
expenses you have with distance education is quite minimal compared to the
costs when attending a traditional classroom.
10. MEDIA IN EDUCATION: EARLIER DEBATES
• Richard Clark summarized over 6 decades of educational media research. It was
obvious to him that many researchers were reporting about flawed studies
involving media. Clark believed that many educators did not understand the last
60 years of research about media and learning.
• In 1983 (and 2012), Clark wrote in volume 53 of the Review of Educational
Research that: the best current evidence is that media are mere vehicles that
deliver instruction but do not influence student achievement any more than the
truck that delivers our groceries causes changes in nutrition … only the content of
the vehicle can influence achievement.
