![2013 SUPER STRATEGY SATURDAY WORKSHOP:
April 13 ELEVATING K-12 NARRATIVE WRITING THROUGH POETRY

Celebrate National Poetry Month with your K-12 students! Reading and writing poetry
with our classes can be the perfect transition from winter doldrums to end-of-school
craziness. This three-hour workshop will provide not only fresh ideas for teaching
students to read and enjoy poetry but will also prepare participants to help their
writers transfer poetic elements to elevate narrative writing in order to meet important
Common Core Standards, such as “using concrete words and phrases and sensory
details to convey experiences and events precisely.”
Throughout this interactive workshop, participants will try out strategies to discover
the “poet” in each of us. A take-home packet of tried-and-true poetry ideas will spark
students’ creativity—enhancing both poetry and narrative writing skills—and will
provide lessons to jump-start teaching in the Fall.
The workshop will be held 9:00am-noon at AASU University Hall 125.

The 2013 Super Strategy Saturday Workshop, held on April 13, focuses on enhancing K-12 narrative writing through poetry, celebrating National Poetry Month. Participants will learn effective strategies for teaching poetry and integrating its elements to improve narrative writing, in line with Common Core standards. The interactive session includes hands-on activities and a take-home packet with resources for future teaching, scheduled from 9:00 AM to noon at AASU University Hall.
