2. APPOSITIVE
• An appositive is a noun, a noun phrase, or noun clause which is placed next
to another word to rename or describe it
NATHAN , our professor, teaches the writing
appositive

3. Commas with appositive
with commas= the noun is non-restrictive
Without commas=the noun is restrictive

4. EXAMPLE
• restrictive
The pizza which I had was delicious
The noun clause is necessary to clarify the noun
(which I had)

5. EXAMPLE
• Non-restrictive
The pizza, which I had, was delicious
The noun clause is not essential for the sentence to make sense.
(which I had)

6. EXAMPLE
• The pizza, which I had, was delicious
(Which I had is not essential for this sentence to make sense)
• The pizza was delicious

7. EXAMPLE
My English teacher, Nathan Price, would swim in
the PE building pool every day.
You can take out “Nathan Price” and it will still make sense. So
its ok to put commas.
But if for some reason you have more then 1 English teacher
don’t put commas because the name is essential to know which
one you’re talking about.
