3. The numbing drug is only one part of what's injected
The liquid in the injection also can include :
• A type of drug called a vasoconstrictor. This drug narrows
your blood vessels. This makes the numbness last longer .
• A chemical that keeps the vasoconstrictor from breaking
down .
• Sodium hydroxide, which helps the numbing drug work .
• Sodium chloride, which helps the drugs get into your
blood .
5. Definition :
• Def : loss of sensation of pain in certain area without
loss Consciousness .
- acts by reducing the rate of depolarization ,
prolonging the rate of repolarization and increasing the
threshold potential .

with Cardiac problems and hyperthyroidism
• Little use .

doses and therefore should not be used by this route.

reflex).

1- there have been reports of serious, life-
threatening adverse effects (e.g., seizures,
coma, irregular heart beat, respiratory
depression) with over-application of
topical products or when applying topical
products that contain high concentrations
of benzocaine to the skin .

2- The topical use of higher concentration
(14-20%) benzocaine spray products
applied to the mouth or mucous
membranes has been found to be a cause
of methemoglobinemia, a disorder in
which the amount of oxygen carried by the
blood is greatly reduced. This side effect is
most common in children under 2 years of
age.
24. Bupivacaine
• is an anesthetic that blocks nerve impulses in body used as a local
anesthetic in oral maxillofacial surgery and postoperative pain .
