This document summarizes the research and development process for a new smartphone app aimed at improving the supermarket shopping experience. Ethnographic research was conducted involving observations of and interviews with shoppers. Key findings were that it is difficult to find items in stores and people want clarity and the ability to shop online when time is limited. A draft app idea involves organizing store items and prices, making recommendations based on purchase history, creating shopping lists, and allowing online ordering and pickup reservations. Further research on existing apps found that while some help with tasks like shared shopping lists, they do not fully personalize the experience or allow filtering by multiple preferences like budget and diet.
