An anticline is an upward fold in rock layers in the Earth's crust. The Appalachian Mountains contain many anticlines, some of which are only visible under a microscope. Other famous anticline locations include the Appalachian Mountains and Mount Everest. An anticline forms when the Earth's crust bends but does not crack, similar to a wrinkle in a rug or on a bed comforter.
