Answer this question: What makes language different from
communication? Is language unique to people? (150-200words)
Reply the following my group member's response (100 words)
Language is different than communication because language has
structure, whereas communication does not necessarily have to
have structure. Language puts abstract ideas and thoughts into
meaningful sentiments. Communication can include a language,
but language is only one route of communication. For example,
a baby can communicate their needs with crying and pointing,
but that is not a language.
I think that language as we know it is unique to people. Since
there are two parts to language, the indicative and predicative, I
think it is safe to say that other species might have some
indicative parts to their communication style, but that only
people focus on the predicative section. I think we are the only
species that are able to talk about abstract ideas such as the
future and different hypotheticals.
