Andy Warhol was born in 1928 in Pennsylvania to working-class immigrant parents from Eastern Europe. He showed an early talent for art and began taking drawing classes at age 17. At age 19, he moved to New York City and found success illustrating for magazines. In 1961 at age 33, he had his first exhibition of Pop Art works which made him very famous. He founded his studio, The Factory, in 1964 where he incorporated mass production techniques into his artistic practice and collaborated with many other artists. Warhol produced works in many media including silkscreens and Polaroids and his portraits of famous people from the 1970s-1980s became very well known. He attempted suicide in 1968 and had a major retrospective in 1971.
