Andy Kaplan is a financial executive with over 30 years of experience in publishing, digital
media and ecommerce. His board experience includes two public companies. As CFO, he has
executed two successful IPOs. Andy is a CPA and earned his MBA at Harvard Business School.
As Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Audible (now an Amazon
Company), he led the company’s IPO and four additional financings, and served on its board of
directors. At WiderThan Americas, a Korean wireless communications company now owned by
RealNetworks, Inc., he was the financial expert on its audit committee, and also served on its
governance and compensation committees.
Andy currently serves as Chief Financial Officer of DonorsChoose.org. DonorsChoose.org is a
rapidly growing crowdfunded charity, fully incorporating social media throughout its activities.
DonorsChoose.org has channeled over $400 million to public school classrooms across America.
Earlier in his career, as Chief Financial Officer, Andy led the IPO of Vertis Communications, a
$1.1 billion provider of print and digital advertising solutions. Prior to that, Andy spent 15 years
at Time Warner, helping to build Home Box Office (HBO), Time Magazine International and
Time Life. At Time Life, a global book, music, video publishing and direct marketing company,
he served as its Chief Financial Officer, helping to increase annual revenue to over $500 million.
Andy has used his financial, operations and leadership skills in launching, managing and turning
around businesses in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. He is well-versed in the levers that
drive customer lifetime value.
His transaction experience includes the negotiation, start-up and management of joint ventures,
leveraged lease financing, securitization of accounts receivable, acquisitions and divestitures, tax
credit sales, structuring of licensing and royalty agreements, and issuance of equity instruments
for cash and services. He has managed SEC reporting and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance activities.
Andy has lived and worked in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. He has been a panelist
on CNBC’s Executive Vision television series and Microsoft’s Global Imagine Cup program.
He is an active member of the National Association of Corporate Directors, is on the FASB Not-
For-Profit Resource Committee and is a member of FEI. Andy serves on the advisory board of
Sandbox Summit. At The Refinery, a start-up accelerator in Westport, CT, he mentors
entrepreneurs. Following graduation from Florida State University in 1974, he began his career
as a CPA with EY. He earned his MBA at Harvard Business School in 1978. Andy is free to
travel to board meetings. He believes face-to-face board meetings are the most effective.
