The stomach is a J-shaped organ that receives food from the esophagus. It has four portions: the cardiac portion where the esophagus connects, the fundus which is a domed structure above the esophageal opening, the body which is the largest and central region, and the pyloric region near the small intestine. The stomach contains gastric glands that secrete gastric juices like hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin to break down food into a semi-fluid substance called chyme. Muscular contractions help mechanically break down food, which is then released in small amounts through the pyloric sphincter into the small intestine.
