In 1938, Hitler promised not to attack Czechoslovakia but secretly planned to stir up tensions and trouble among Sudeten Germans to justify invading. At meetings with British Prime Minister Chamberlain, Hitler first demanded control of parts of the Sudetenland, then all of it. In October 1938, Britain and France signed the Munich Agreement allowing Germany to annex the Sudetenland in an effort to appease Hitler and avert war, despite originally committing to support Czechoslovakia.
An eye for an eye
Sir Matthew visits Mary Banks in Holloway Jail to prepare her for questioning as the defendant in her upcoming trial for murdering her husband. He assumes the role of prosecution counsel, questioning her about key details of the case such as why her hair was found on the axe used in the killing and her large purchase of strychnine. Though she has explanations for these incriminating pieces of evidence, Sir Matthew remains unconvinced of her innocence. Their practice questioning session reveals she may be hiding important information, leaving Sir Matthew still uncertain whether she is telling the truth.
