If you love to eat food that has been fermenting such as cheese or yogurt, Well
that was the anaerobic process.
Simple Definition for What is Anaerobic Process
As the name implies, anaerobic process is a process that using fermentation
bacteria for digesting organic substance in low oxygen situation.
In anaerobic process the bacteria are forced to work to pick up oxygen from the
organic chain bonding, that so the organic bond wil be break into small organic
chain.
We can find the anaerobic process naturally in Swamps or lakes that. If you look
carefully, sometimes we can find a sudden fire sparks occur on a swamps. Don't be
scared, because that was just only a methane gas that reacted with heat. And the
anaerobic process was the one who made that methane gas.
A lot of advantages of Anaerobic Process
Anaerobic process, has give human a lot of advantages. Because not only it help
digesting organic matter in the waste, anaerobic process also can serve as small
energy reactor. And you can see one of this example in Milwaukee, wisconsin

In the wastewater treatment process, anaerobic hold a great part in removing huge
organic substance from the water. We can see that with the help of anaerobic
process, the BOD can be decreased from ten thousand, into one or two thousand
(80% of removal).

And the best part of using anaerobic process is that, this process doesn't require a
lot of mechanical and electrical equipment to run. We just have to design the
correct anaerobic tanks (UASB), that can be made from steel, frp, or cement tank.

Anaerobic Process Requirements
Just like humans, the bacteria also have their own requirement and rule of living.
And these are the their requirement to give the best result in anaerobic process
1. Set the pH in the neutral zone
In order for the anaerobic process can run perfectly, the pH of the wastewater need
to bes set in the neutral range (6 -8.5). If the pH has not been set correctly, the
process may fail at first and it will take a long time to make it achieve the best
result. But once the process has been running smoothly, usually waste water that
has been processed through this process will have a pH below neutral. which is
about 5 or 4. This is because the organic acids produced by the bacteria when the
fermentation process and that's fine.

2. Carefully in Making the vessel for anaerobic
We must built a very air tight vessel, smaller the oxygen content is better for this
process. But still don't forget to provided a place for the methane gas release.
By the way, anaerobicc tank will have about 3 to 5 times of the normal daily flow.
So, if your wastewater daily debit is 100m3. Then please prepare at least 300 m3,
to make it work.

Don't forget to put a heavy duty, corrosion resistant mixer insde the tanks.

The mixer works as a transporter ( I can find the correct word to describe this), that
help methane gas and the bacteria move. Because, you see that sludge may settled
below the tanks. Thus make the fermentation proccess can't work smooth.
Mixing process (Slow Mixing), will give the methane and bacteria area to move.
4. Don't Forget to Give them Nutrition
Actually, anaerobic process requires no special nutrients, because the main nutrients
that they use are organic substances that comes from the waste. However, in
certain cases, where there is no waste water entering due to shut down plant
condition (Usually in christmas, or iedul fitri) , it would require food intake some
ammount of nutrition to make sure the bacteria not dying or doing some cannibal
act (eat another bacteria).
You know that, Anaerobic process will take a very long time to get back to normal
if the bacteria dies dies.I suggest to give them a rotten food, or anything that has
carbohydrate on it or maybe you can stock some of wastewater to feed them.
5. AVOID Desinfectant Contamination
I give a full capital on AVOID word because the main enemy for bacteria is
desinfectant. And i have some experience a total kill in my anaerobic tank because
off the laboratory worker pour some desinfectant to the sewage line. And It really
takes months for them to recover (If I just knew who pour that F***ing thing, I
swear I gonne *** him/her.
Make sure all of the worker on your company undestand this situation, so this
situation won't happen on you.
More than that, bacteria is very sensitive to small changes in their environment.
Just one mistake, and you'll have to fix it for months. That so, please avoid any
chemical, desinfectant, or anything that not related to your daily menu of
wastewater to go to your system.
