In this song-based Step-by-step Lesson Plan for English language Teaching,
featuring the song Someday by OneRepublic, students TALK ABOUT needs,
READ a dialogue adapted from the lyrics of a song and DISCUSS it, SPECULATE
about the music genre, LISTEN to the song, READ the lyrics and find the
synonyms of words in a list, and WATCH the music video and TALK about it.
OBS: This lesson plan was made for ONLINE TEACHING, but it can be modified
for face-to-face instruction, as well.

Show the slide with a dialogue. (it’s the adaptation of the lyrics of a song). In pairs,
(breakout rooms) students answer the questions about the Dialogue.
Dialogue:
A; Some nights, I drown in the weight of the things that I think I need.
B: Someday, when we're older, we won't worry about the things that we don't need.
You're going to see that someday, we'll be all that we need
Ask your students:
What do you need in your life right now? Do you think this is really important? Why?
Have some students share their ideas.
Step 3 (7 min)
Have students share their ideas. Have a mini discussion.
Questions
Who is speaking?
What is their relationship?
What are they talking about?
How are they feeling?
Step 4 (5 min)
Tell them that the conversation came from the lyrics of a new song.
Ask them:
Based on conversation, what kind of song do you think it is? (music genre, slow, fast, sad,
happy?) why?
Students share their ideas as a class.
Step 5 (5min)
Play the song for them to check their ideas. They must take notes about the message of
the song, as well.
Step 6 (7min)
Students share what they understood about the message of the song
Step 7 (10 - 15 min)

Students read the lyrics. Help them with the vocabulary.
There’s a list with seven groups of words. They are all synonyms. The students have to
read the lyrics and find 7 words to complete the list of synonyms..
To check their answers, have students click FINISH!! and then CHECK MY ANSWERS!
Step 8 (5 min)
Students watch the music video and comment on it to close the activity.

An ELT Song Activity To Talk About Needs And Practice Synonyms With OneRepublic!

  • 1. DESCRIPTION: In this song-based Step-by-step Lesson Plan for English language Teaching, featuring the song Someday by OneRepublic, students TALK ABOUT needs, READ a dialogue adapted from the lyrics of a song and DISCUSS it, SPECULATE about the music genre, LISTEN to the song, READ the lyrics and find the synonyms of words in a list, and WATCH the music video and TALK about it. OBS: This lesson plan was made for ONLINE TEACHING, but it can be modified for face-to-face instruction, as well.   • 2. STEP-BY-STEP LESSON PLAN songactivityfactory.com Step 1 (5min) Step 2 (10 min) Pair work Genial.ly Presentation LINK Show the slide with a dialogue. (it’s the adaptation of the lyrics of a song). In pairs, (breakout rooms) students answer the questions about the Dialogue. Dialogue: A; Some nights, I drown in the weight of the things that I think I need. B: Someday, when we're older, we won't worry about the things that we don't need. You're going to see that someday, we'll be all that we need Ask your students: What do you need in your life right now? Do you think this is really important? Why? Have some students share their ideas. Step 3 (7 min) Have students share their ideas. Have a mini discussion. Questions Who is speaking? What is their relationship? What are they talking about? How are they feeling? Step 4 (5 min) Tell them that the conversation came from the lyrics of a new song. Ask them: Based on conversation, what kind of song do you think it is? (music genre, slow, fast, sad, happy?) why? Students share their ideas as a class. Step 5 (5min) Play the song for them to check their ideas. They must take notes about the message of the song, as well. Step 6 (7min) Students share what they understood about the message of the song Step 7 (10 - 15 min) Interactive Worksheet (pdf version HERE) LINK Students read the lyrics. Help them with the vocabulary. There’s a list with seven groups of words. They are all synonyms. The students have to read the lyrics and find 7 words to complete the list of synonyms.. To check their answers, have students click FINISH!! and then CHECK MY ANSWERS!
