Companies typically over-pay for data archiving. First, they're forced to make an expensive upfront payment for their archiving solution (which does not include the ongoing cost for operational expenses such as power, facilities, staffing, and maintenance). Second, since companies have to guess what their capacity requirements will be, they understandably over-provision to make sure they have enough capacity for data redundancy and unexpected growth. This set of circumstances results in under-utilized capacity and wasted money. With Amazon Glacier, you pay only for what you use. Join us for this webinar where you will learn how Amazon Glacier changes the game for data archiving and backup as you pay nothing upfront, pay a very low price for storage, and can scale your usage up or down as needed.

Active Archiving with Amazon S3 and Tiering to Amazon Glacier - March 2017 AW...Amazon Web Services
Most organizations have data that they need to retain, but is accessed infrequently, if ever. In cases where this data needs to be accessible at a moment’s notice, it’s hard to save money by moving to an archival storage because access times on these platforms are slower. Now, customers are using Amazon S3 & Glacier for “Active Archiving” to reduce storage costs while maintaining the flexibility of instant access. In this tech talk, we’ll show you how implement Active Archiving with AWS Object Storage services, and we’ll provide some real world examples of how AWS customers are saving money with these capabilities today.
Learning Outcomes:
• Define Active Archiving, and understand how it is different from traditional cold archiving
• Review the cost modeling tools available to determine if Active Archiving is a good fit for your organization
• Learn about best practices for using AWS Object Storage features & functionality to enable Active Archiving
In this session, we’ll expand on the S3 re:Invent deep-dive session with a hands-on workshop on advanced S3 features and storage management capabilities. We’ll have AWS S3 and Glacier experts on-hand to deep-dive on S3 architecture, performance & scalability optimization, how to analyze your content and leverage storage tiers (S3 Standard, S3 Standard Infrequent Access, Glacier) to balance cost and SLAs, security considerations, replication with Cross Region Replication (CRR), versioning for data protection and more.
In the hands-on lab, we’ll walk through a customer scenario: architecting a high-performance infrastructure for consumer applications. In the scenario, we’ll use sample data sets on S3, analyze object retrieval patterns and design a complete solution using many of the features S3 offers including migrating objects to an appropriate tier.
Prerequisites:
- Participants should have an AWS account established and available for use during the workshop.
- Please bring your own laptop.

Amazon Glacier is considered as a cloud storage platform developed and launched by AWS with longer retrieval times. Under this, a developer is meant to use Amazon Glacier for the purpose of moving the less accessible data to archive storage for saving costs on storage.
The archiving solutions were available earlier at a high cost, and along with that, the companies had to determine the capacity requirement as well. This was hampering the entire functionality with several drawbacks such as under-utilized capacity and unwanted money expenditures. Therefore, Amazon Glacier took over this hassle and brought in a convenient and cheaper solution for data backup and archiving.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

8. Customer Data Archiving Examples
Enterprise Archives
Media Archives
Scientific Archives
Enterprise Information Archiving includes archiving
email, business documents and other unstructured
content. Driven by business needs, compliance
requirements, and to reduce primary storage costs.
Media companies’ core assets (books, movies,
music, TV etc.) can grow to hundreds of petabytes.
Amazon Glacier reduces the cost of storing these
assets while simultaneously increasing the durability,
ease of use, and accessibility of the content.
Research and scientific organizations, such as
pharmaceutical and bio-tech companies, as well as
universities, store many large but rarely accessed
data sets.

11. Amazon Glacier Concepts
Archives
An archive is a durably stored block of information. You store your data in
Amazon Glacier as archives. You may upload a single file as an archive,
but your request costs will be lower if you aggregate your data. TAR and
ZIP are common formats that customers use to aggregate multiple files into
a single file before uploading to Amazon Glacier
Vaults
You use vaults to organize the data you store in Amazon Glacier. Each
archive is stored in a vault of your choice. You may control access to your
data by setting vault-level access policies

15. Additional Amazon Glacier / AWS Concepts
Vault Inventory
For a real time view of the contents of your vaults, you would refer
to your index. For Disaster Recovery purposes, in case you lose or
corrupt your index, Amazon Glacier maintains an inventory of all
your archives in a vault. The vault inventory is updated
approximately once a day
Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS)
Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) is a web service
that makes it easy to set up, operate, and send notifications from the
cloud

Application
18. Aggregate Large Number of Smaller Files
Reduce overhead costs
Reduce requests costs
Find ideal archive size for your use case
19. Uploading Large files – MultipartUpload
Internet weather
Distance between your application and Amazon Glacier
Cost of retrying failed transmissions
Improve upload throughput
21. Optimize Data Retrieval and Download
Retrieval vs. Download
Ranged Retrieval
• Reduce cost, control retrieval rate
• Retrieve only what you need
Ranged Download (Get)
• Improve download speed
• Be aware of your download speed as data is only staged for 24 hours
22. Ranged Retrieval Example
Example 12 GB archive
Retrieved using a single 4 hour job = 3GB/hour peak
retrieval
Retrieved over 24 hours using 6 consecutive jobs =
0.5GB/hour peak retrieval
