Bouldering is rock climbing stripped down to
its raw essentials. Leaving behind ropes and
harnesses and just using climbing shoes over
safety mats, your challenge is to climb tricky
routes using balance, technique, strength, and
your brain.
It's a great full-body workout, as you use your
arms, legs and core strength to make your way
up the walls. A session will leave you physically
energised, mentally refreshed and smiling ear
to ear. We can't think of a better way to get fit
and have fun at the same time.
At Boulder Brighton you don't need
experience or lots of expensive kit to have
a go - making it really easy to get into if
you've never tried it before. It's the
fastest growing branch of rock
climbing, and it's easy to see why!
Come with friends or come on your
own, we'd love to meet you.

CONTENTS
ALT OPEN HOUSE
Alt Open house started as a small idea last June when we thought how great it
would be to have open house style exhibitions mixed with DIY art fairs across
some of Brighton and Hoves most unique and exciting venues.
We are showcasing 63 artists across 13 venues. The art trail will lead you from
Seven Dials down to London Road, across to the Level then into the North Laines,
up into Kemp town then through the busy City centre to Hove. If you make it to
all 13 venues you can win prizes donated by the artists and sponsors.
Taking part in Alt Open House is free for all the artists involved, they take 100%
of their sales and our aim is to support artists no matter where they are in their
career, whether its the first stage for them or years down the line. Art has never
been an easy path to choose financially, but we believe that given the right
opportunities artists can see their work and career grow.
ALT OPEN HOUSE 2017
Please keep an eye on our website and
social media for announcements for
Alt Open House next year, we plan to
do this again in May 2017
and a Summer art trail in August.

Maple cafe has the wonderful balance of being
central and convenient, with a tucked away
cosy feel... but not to mention a ‘damn fine’
cup of coffee by Alchemy Roasters. Nestled
in the predominately residential Brighton
neighbourhood of Seven Dials, the cafe has an
unusual layout that has been cleverly designed
around their strangely shaped building. At first
glance passers by might think Maple is a small
coffee take away spot. The quiet upstairs loft is
simple, but cosy seating up to 6 people. While
‘The Flint Room’ is a larger sunny back seating
area that is hidden away.
The menu consists of handmade artisanal style
sandwiches, salads, soups, locally made pastries
and cakes with gluten free and vegan options
to boot. Maple is one of the only specialty coffee
shops in Brighton where you can get a cooked egg
breakfast 7 days a week.
The focus at Maple cafe is good coffee, good food,
and great experience. Maple is active in the
community arts and crafts scene by showcasing
local artist’s work, hosting a variety of monthly
workshops and events.

JOSEF
CABEY
Eloise Oui makes space story drawings. Takes
field notes from the outermost reaches of the
mind and synthesises them into galatic comic
set pieces. Pastel and whimsical, exceedingly
tropical and improbable. This reality seems to
exist independent of our will, with its own logic
and evolving characters, emerging from a black
void or floating in a coloured cloud.
ELOISE
OUI
Josefs paintings are mostly produced in acrylic
and are primarily figurative. Figures are
constructed using scalpel cut board. The negative
shapes from the cut outs are filled with painted
texture making up the definition or expression
of the image. Physically the work has depth due
to the cut and layered elements. Josef often
incorporates collage juxtaposing printed images
with the deep acrylic texture. The work often has
a playful element to it but invariably investigates
deeper themes.
The Hare and Hounds was re-imagined back
in March 2014. A well known name in the
Brighton pub scene; stripped out, redesigned
and improved. The pub is now second home to
La Choza, a Brighton gem with their flagship
‘Mexican street food’ restaurant situated in the
heart of The South Laines. Proudly serving up
some of finest brews on offer as well as regular
tap takeovers.
Alongside great food, beers and cocktails, The
Hare and Hounds also sits underneath BLEACH,
a new music venue playing host yearly to The Alt
Great Escape music festival as well as regular

Marcelina Amelia is a mixed media artist.
Originally from Poland she draws inspiration
from religious iconography, folk tales, childhood
memories, dreams, sexuality and human
relationships. Her works are an uneasy mixture
of lustful darkness and adolescent innocence.
Inspired by pot plants, trapped wildernesses in
miniature, the overcrowded streets of London
and never ending online content, this body of
work examines the relationship between humans,
individuals and their environment. Marcelina
utilises nature as a metaphor for everyday feelings
and headaches. Marcelina received her degree
in Illustration and Visual Communication from
University of Westminster, in London. She has been
featured in publications including Booooooom,
Digital Arts, Art Wednesday, Vogue and Ballad Of
Magazine. She exhibited at D&AD, New Designers,
London Design Festival, London Illustration Fair

ALT OPEN HOUSE AltOpen house started as a small idea last June when we thought how great it would be to have open house style exhibitions mixed with DIY art fairs across some of Brighton and Hoves most unique and exciting venues. We are showcasing 63 artists across 13 venues. The art trail will lead you from Seven Dials down to London Road, across to the Level then into the North Laines, up into Kemp town then through the busy City centre to Hove. If you make it to all 13 venues you can win prizes donated by the artists and sponsors. Taking part in Alt Open House is free for all the artists involved, they take 100% of their sales and our aim is to support artists no matter where they are in their career, whether its the first stage for them or years down the line. Art has never been an easy path to choose financially, but we believe that given the right opportunities artists can see their work and career grow. ALT OPEN HOUSE 2017 Please keep an eye on our website and social media for announcements for Alt Open House next year, we plan to do this again in May 2017 and a Summer art trail in August. 3 Buying the art At each venue there will either be an artist or a member of staff who will be able to help you if you wish to purchase something, some pieces which are attached to the walls (originals etc) it may have to be arrange for the work to be taken down or collected at the end of the Alt Open House. Venues have different opening times which are stated in each venue listing, most venues are open at the weekends Saturdays and Sundays but some are just Saturdays. Throughout the week you can visit the venues, see the exhibition and purchase the art too. Disabled Access Most of the venues have disabled access, if you want to check please call the venue or contact us here at alternativeopenhouse@gmail.com and we will let you know. I tend to work with bands, doing album artwork, teeshirts and the like but also screen print a lot of personal work. Drawing stuff is fun. ANTHONY DOWNIE JOSEF CABEY Eloise Oui makes space story drawings. Takes field notes from the outermost reaches of the mind and synthesises them into galatic comic set pieces. Pastel and whimsical, exceedingly tropical and improbable. This reality seems to exist independent of our will, with its own logic and evolving characters, emerging from a black void or floating in a coloured cloud. ELOISE OUI Josefs paintings are mostly produced in acrylic and are primarily figurative. Figures are constructed using scalpel cut board. The negative shapes from the cut outs are filled with painted texture making up the definition or expression of the image. Physically the work has depth due to the cut and layered elements. Josef often incorporates collage juxtaposing printed images with the deep acrylic texture. The work often has a playful element to it but invariably investigates deeper themes. The Hare and Hounds was re-imagined back in March 2014. A well known name in the Brighton pub scene; stripped out, redesigned and improved. There is also a vault which has been turned into a cinema which boasts being the smallest cinema in Britain with regular film screenings.
