∆, now known as Alt-J, is a British alternative indie pop quartet formed in 2007 at Leeds University by Gwil Sainsbury, Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton, and Thom Green. Their debut album An Awesome Wave was released in 2012 and was favored to win the Mercury Prize that year. The band spent two years rehearsing and recording demo songs inspired by Joe's guitarist father and hallucinogens before signing with Infectious Records in 2011.
