world-class tennis player and the international footballer are neighbours,
perhaps former classmates, for the people on these islands.

When it felt like the world was changing
constantly from one minute to the next, and
it seemed that any long-term plans would
have to be thrown out the window, we joined
the journey into the unknown and decided
to make this issue of THE Stylemate more
spontaneous and experimental. You’ll see
that there isn’t a person looking up at you
from the front cover as usual – instead, we
commissioned emerging artist Alessandro
Painsi to think about creating something
different for it. Bar a couple of general
pointers like “maybe something with text”
and “it should be about people”, he was
otherwise given free rein. You can see
the result of this creative freedom now if
you turn back a page. It says, very simply,
“nobody believed it – faith”. This inspired
us to reply “but we did do”, as you can see
written boldly on this page. It is important
for us to add at this stage: we believe that
everything will be OK, because we believe in
people and have faith in what they do, and
that’s what this issue of THE Stylemate is
all about. We discuss human nature and
talk about people and what they do, what
they dream about, what inspires them and
what drives them. They are people that
inspire faith, both in themselves and in
others. We’ve also experimented with the
cover story, in which we present work by
photographer Mathilde Karrèr, whose image
titles resonate with the theme of the article.
But there’s no need to say any more here.

Martin Grandits, who deals with this topic
in a humorous way in his works. And that
takes us onto the second theme of this
issue: Austria. So often (and so readily) we
have looked beyond the horizon in previous
issues of THE Stylemate and explored
the whole wide world. But this time, we
contemplate what’s closer to home, and
we do it with great passion and no small
amount of pride. We’ve had many great
conversations with interesting people, and
attempted to debate the value of things.
We talked with innovation consultant Mario
Pricken about the value of objects and the
change in our value compass caused by
Covid-19, with Viennese wine merchants
about “cellar secrets” and the emotions they
can evoke, and with Graz-based designer
Lukas Klingsbichel about the value of the
function and mindful use of materials.

of value they find in their occupations.
And that reveals a lot about the true value

understand better. We want to have a clear head so we can
have a better grasp on the world, as we find ourselves in an
increasingly swift state of transition.
We want to see clear lines in architecture and follow clear
visions. Because one thing is clear: nothing ever stays the
same. That’s what makes it so important to have an unclouded
view of the world. And this view of the world is our greatest
passion.

Wir wollen von Menschen klare Worte hören, um besser
verstehen zu können. Wir wollen klar im Kopf sein, um die
Welt besser erfassen zu können, denn wir befinden uns in
einem immer schnelleren Transformationszustand.
Wir wollen in der Architektur klare Linien sehen und klaren
Visionen folgen. Denn eines ist klar: Niemals bleibt alles so,
wie es einmal war. Deswegen ist es so wichtig einen ungetrübten
Blick auf die Welt zu bekommen. Und dieser Blick auf
die Welt ist unsere größte Leidenschaft.
Where does the world flourish? How far into the future do you have to look if you want to know how the world evolves? Which people and companies should we be aware of? What visions should we share and how can we pull together to shape the world? We have many questions on our minds, and we hope that we can provide a few answers in this issue of THE Stylemate. For this reason, we’ve set our sights on Mexico, because we believe that’s where you can see clearly what tourism will and should look like. We establish that there are passionate people who have learnt to listen to their conscience and then act accordingly. Future researcher Christiane Varga shares with us her vision for the world – will she be proved right?We are of the opinion that a form of community concept would encourage beautiful flowers to blossom. A concept that provides answers to questions like “How do I manage to bring people together, allow them to take part in something real?”, “How can a concept, an idea be developed through participation?”, “How does something new emerge from passionate, interested, genuine people?”. Because that might just be what makes a difference in future: involving people and not AI.

When the world around us becomes more turbulent, we search
for harmony and balance in the small things, within ourselves.
It’s balance we need so that our own world doesn’t fall apart at the
seams. In Japan, this is called “nagomi”, which refers to a holistic
way of life shaped by harmony and balance.
Japanese neuroscientist Ken Mogi, who we’ve interviewed for this
issue, explains how you can live a balanced life thanks to nagomi –
balanced meaning that things aren’t great all of the time. Quite the
opposite: in order to have balance, both extremes of an emotion or
situation have to exist. To have fortune in life there must also be
misfortune, for love there has to be loss, for fun there has to be work
and for altruism there has to be selfishness. Zest for life, or to put
it more strongly true happiness, occurs when you manage to accept
all facets of life and bring them into balance.
Nagomi is a way of life that shows us what makes us more resilient,
what benefits us in our relationships and everyday lives. What else
does us good? Discovering the world by travelling, meeting new
people and interacting with them. What we need is the feeling
of connectedness. Especially when so much of what’s around us is
uncertain.

There doesn't seem to be an innocent light-heartedness anymore. We also have these thoughts, and it's this "contemplation" that we've devoted this issue to.
We met free-diver and environmental activist Christian Redl, who supports the protection of the sea through his “7Oceans“ project. We spoke to him about climate change, ghost nets, overfishing and the plundering of the world’s oceans. What is there to be positive about? The fact that Christian Redl believes there is a solution to every problem.
We also want to believe that. And it gets easier when you consider the many people who try to make a difference through their work. Day in, day out. We’ve invited chefs Stefanie Herkner and Paul Ivic for an interview, taken a look around the new Green Pea shopping centre in Turin, which is entirely dedicated to sustainability, and got to know several sustainable fashion labels a little better.
There are also many special characters in craft and design with ideas along the right lines – as there are at our LIFESTYLEHOTELS. Once again, we’ve been lucky enough to get to know some incredibly interesting people who we’ve been able to contemplate with. Because that’s what matters: not eliminating things but rather acting consciously and naturally. Preferably all together.

davon, uns wieder frei bewegen zu können,
zu reisen und Menschen kennenzulernen.
Neue Orte zu entdecken und uns dort wieder
uneingeschränkt wohlfühlen zu können.
Das hat uns inspiriert, darüber nachzudenken,
was uns wichtig ist, wann etwas Wert
besitzt und welche Vorstellungen von Wert
es gibt. Dazu zeigen wir auf dem Cover ein
Bild des österreichischen Künstlers Martin
Grandits, der in seinen Arbeiten auf sehr
humorvolle Weise mit diesem Thema spielt.
Womit wir auch beim zweiten Schwerpunkt
unserer Ausgabe wären: Österreich. So oft
(und so gerne) haben wir von hier aus in
die Welt geblickt. Diesmal betrachten wir
unsere nähere Umgebung, und das mit
großer Leidenschaft und auch ein bisschen
Stolz. Wir haben viele tolle Gespräche mit
interessanten Persönlichkeiten geführt und
dabei versucht, den Wert von Dingen zu
erörtern. Mit Innovationsconsultant Mario
Pricken haben wir deswegen über den Wert
von Objekten und die Veränderung unseres
Wertekompasses durch Covid-19 gesprochen,
mit Wiener Weinhändlern über das „Kellergold“
und die Emotionen, die es wecken
kann und mit dem Grazer Designer Lukas
Klingsbichel über den Wert der Funktion
und den bedachten Einsatz von Materialien.
Ihnen allen bedeutet das, was sie machen,
unglaublich viel und die Wertschätzung, die
sie gegenüber ihrer Tätigkeit empfinden, ist
im Vordergrund. Und damit ist eigentlich
schon viel verraten, über den wahren Wert
der Dinge.

den jungen Künstler Alessandro Painsi
damit beauftragt, unser Cover zu gestalten.
Er bekam von uns ein paar Anhaltspunkte
mit, wie „eventuell etwas mit Text“ und „es
geht um Menschen“, aber ansonsten war er
frei in seinem Schaffen. Das Ergebnis sehen
Sie nun, wenn Sie wieder zurückblättern.
So steht da nun geschrieben: „nobody
believed it – faith“. Und aus diesem Grund
können Sie auf dieser Seite in fetten Lettern
lesen „but we did do“. Denn wir haben Vertrauen
– darauf, dass alles schon irgendwie
gut wird. Denn wir vertrauen den Menschen
und wir setzen unser Vertrauen in das, was
sie tun. Das passt auch zu den Inhalten
dieser Ausgabe. Wir erzählen von und zeigen
Menschen, die besondere, schöne, qualitativ
hochwertige Dinge machen, die sich für ihr
Leben und ihre Mitmenschen begeistern, die
glauben und vertrauen. Die genau deswegen
ihre Energie und Zeit in etwas investieren,
das sie selbst glücklich macht und auch
andere glücklich machen soll. Und deswegen
wollen wir an dieser Stelle gar nicht so viel
vorwegnehmen, denn wir haben auch Vertrauen
in Sie, dass Sie weiterblättern und in
unsere Geschichten über diese Menschen
eintauchen.

Wabi-Sabi – die Schönheit in der Unvollkommenheit zu
finden, ist ein japanisches ästhetisches Konzept, das uns gut
gefällt und dem wir gerne folgen möchten. In dieser Ausgabe
von THE Stylemate über Japan haben wir viele schöne Dinge
zusammengetragen, von denen einige nahezu perfekt sind,
andere wiederum so interessant, dass darin ihre Schönheit
besteht. Anlass dafür, unseren Blick auf Japan und die
japanische Kultur zu richten, sind die Olympischen Spiele,
die diesen Sommer in Tokio ausgetragen werden. Unser
Cover dazu ist insofern sportlich, als es ungewöhnlich ist,
aber für uns genau dem Konzept von Wabi-Sabi entspricht.
Die erfolgreiche japanische Künstlerin Yayoi Kusama, bekannt
für ihre Polka Dots, die uns fast in einen tranceähnlichen
Zustand versetzen können und das Gefühl von Obsession
vermitteln, hat ab Frühjahr eine große Schau im New York
Botanical Garden. Bereits mit der Presse geteilte Informationen
und Fotos lassen etwas ganz Außergewöhnliches erwarten.
Wir beschäftigen uns also nicht nur mit Japan in Japan,
sondern auch mit Japan im Rest der Welt. Dazu haben wir
mit der in Wien lebenden Lichtdesignerin Megumi Ito
geplaudert oder uns von einem österreichischen Juwelier
aufregende japanische Perlen zeigen lassen. Wir schreiben
darüber, wie man sich in Europa von Japan zu außergewöhnlichen
kulinarischen Köstlichkeiten inspirieren lassen oder
welche Designer und Fashion Stores man in Tokio unbedingt
kennen und besuchen muss. Der in Berlin lebende Publizist
Helder Suffenplan spricht in seiner Kolumne über Duft
und seine Liebe zu Japan – er wird uns übrigens auch in den
kommenden Ausgaben aus der Welt des Olfaktorischen
berichten.

concept of aesthetic values that we really like and wish to
embrace. This issue of THE Stylemate is dedicated to all things
Japan and we have put together a selection of many beautiful
things for you to enjoy, some of which are virtually perfect,
while others are so interesting that that could be deemed as
their version of beauty. The reason for orienting our focus on
Japan and the Japanese culture is that this summer will see
Tokyo playing host to the Olympic Games. Our cover is more
unusual than sporty, but we think it is the perfect example
of the concept of wabi-sabi. Successful Japanese artist Yayoi
Kusama is known for her polka dots that have the capacity to
put us into an almost trance-like state and convey the feeling
of obsession, and this spring will be presenting a huge show in
The New York Botanical Garden. Information and photos that
have already been released to the press indicate that it will be
something quite extraordinary. So we’re not just looking at
Japan in Japan, but also at Japan around the world.
In this respect, we have chatted to Vienna resident and lighting
designer Megumi Ito, and asked an Austrian jeweller to show
us some exciting Japanese pearls. We write about how we in
Europe can be inspired by unusual culinary delicacies from
Japan, and which designers and fashion stores in Tokyo you
absolutely have and visit. Helder Suffenplan, a publicist
living in Berlin, talks in his column about fragrance and his
love of Japan – he will also report in future issues on the world
of olfactory delights.
And of course, we have the usual selection of hotels that are
sure to inspire you to get out and travel.

Dieser wuchs in der tropischen Gefängniskolonie von Französisch-Guyana auf, wo sein Beamtenvater zum Ausbau des Straßennetzes eingesetzt worden war. Hier entdeckte er als junger Mann die Schönheit der Morpho-Schmetterlinge in

Oscar Wilde, the Irish writer and master of the
astute aphorism, coined one for luxury: “Let
me be surrounded by luxury, I can do without
the necessities!” The American journalist and
author John Updike, on the other hand, has a
luxury problem: “Possession diminishes per-
ception of value, immediately”. The Spanish
molecular head chef Ferran Adrià relativises
luxury: “Nuts are as good as caviar, and rice
is as good as lobster”.
The culinary master is probably right. At
least, the Germany luxury researcher Klaus
Heine from TU Berlin university agrees with
him. “In the past, there was a relatively clear
distinction between what was luxury and
what was not. Luxury meant expensive cars
and bubbly.” Now, the definition of luxury is
more personal. “An expensive trip for study,
for example, can also be a luxury.” According
to Heine, the focus is more on experiencing
something, on treating yourself, than on
showing off.
There are many sides and many aspects to
luxury, but all have one thing in common:
they can only be enjoyed when our everyday
existence seems secure.
The functional and practical is not enough.
You can buy a car, or be there when it is
created. You can simply shop, or you can
enter hallowed precincts. “The flagship
store is becoming a walk-in lifestyle ma-
gazine …” writes the marketing adviser
Christian Mikunda in his latest book, “Mar-
keting spüren: Willkommen am dritten Ort”
(“Experiencing Marketing: Welcome to the
Third Place”) (Redline Verlag, 2015). The-
se places are no longer simply for buying
what you need, but (also) “places for finding
yourself, for relaxing and regrouping when
in town, for browsing and for meeting peo-
ple”. Theatre may long have been a part of
tourism almost the world over – even small
village improvement societies once sought
to “touch up” reality. Ischgl, however, is su-
rely a pioneer when it comes to the modern
presentation of events and activities for tou-
rists. The Tyrolean village with just 1600 in-
habitants calls itself – and is known as – “the

Jana Scholze curated a major exhibition on
luxury in 2015 at London’s Victoria & Albert
Museum, and this is her conclusion: “Argu
ably we all have a relationship to luxury; lu
xury may be something personal which
relates to experiences of pleasure outside of
daily routines. It may be the idea of something
better … For many people, who lead heavily
pressurized personal and professional lives,
time itself is the most commonly cited luxury.”
The luxury expert Björn Theis has developed
a luxury pyramid that he claims covers all
aspects of luxury. At the base is the “demo-
cratised luxury” that is available to the mass
market in discount stores; the next level is
“social climber luxury”, which is largely about
status symbols. Next is the “niche luxury” en-
joyed by a wide range of subcultures that are
growing ever stronger in a time of increasing
individualisation. Only then comes “intangible
luxury”, most indulged in by stressed middle-
class intellectuals when they look to values,
virtues and sustainability. “Artificial scarcity”
is a luxury segment prized by small, exclusive
“in” groups and is a key marketing tool in
the luxury segment. Then comes “connois-
seurs’ luxury”, which involves an established
relationship between loyal connoisseurs and
prestigious brands. Right at the top of the py-
ramid is “super luxury”, which is only acces-
sible to the richest ten percent of the global
population.
And despite all flowery descriptions of the
term, this brings us to the market – for lu
xury is also a market. Or perhaps, in spite of
all, above all a market. In its Luxury Goods
Worldwide Market Study 2014, the consul-
tancy firm Bain & Company calculated that
lifestyle metropolis of the Alps”. First and fo-
remost, Ischgl is a great ski resort that stret-
ches all the way to Samnaun in Switzerland.
That would be enough in itself, but it isn’t all.
Years ago, the journalist Claudia Jörg-Bro-
sche was already calling Ischgl the “Queen
of the night”. The German pop band “Pur” is
raising the musical curtain on the 2016/2017
season, and Ischgl has in the past welcomed
Elton John, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Roxet-
te, Nickelback and James Blunt. Visitors can
enjoy culinary luxury with an amazing densi-
ty of top-quality cafés and restaurants. Five
restaurants with a total of twelve 2016 Gault
Millau toques offer the peak of culinary expe-
riences. And for exclusive shopping, you can
simply carve from Ischgl to Samnaun and
the one duty-free zone in Switzerland. The
only curb on a luxury spending spree is the
customs regulations … STOP

850 billion dollars are spent on luxury each
year. The strongest drivers on this market are
luxury tourism and luxury cars.
Luxury and tourism, as multiple studies have
shown, are a combination that has grown in
and continues to grow in importance. In the
major luxury metropolises of New York, Hong
Kong, Paris, London and Milan, the luxury
stores would have a difficult time without
big-spending visitors. According to The Ana-
tomy of Travel Retail (a study by Exane BNP
Paribas), travellers account for 40 percent of
luxury goods sales. Most of their purchases
are made at airports, but they also buy on
ferries and cruise ships and in high-street
shops.
Yet there is another, even more important
phenomenon from a tourism perspective:
mature luxury consumers are increasingly
spending their money with exclusive hotels
and travel agencies and in the health and
spa segment rather than in boutiques.
Luxury therefore covers a broad area, as
the luxury consultant Petra-Anna Herhoffer
(inlux) explained at the 2014 Vienna Tourist
Conference: “It is our idea of the beautiful;
an attitude, a cultural treasure, a driver of
innovation; it is economic power, an indivi-
dual ideal and a strategy. In short, luxury is
a superpower.” STOP

On the outskirts of Dakar, Senegal,
Mohammed proudly showed me his new
home: an unplastered house beside the
motorway with a tap for a bathroom, a sag-
ging bed with wire mesh, a concrete floor,
far too small a kitchen and plastic flowers on
the living room table. A dump by western
standards, but to Mohammed, a long-che
rished dream. Compare this to a Viennese
lawyer’s three-storey penthouse in the city
centre: complete with an open-air whirl-
pool, pictures worth millions on the walls, a
Chevrolet Equinox and Aston Martin Vulcan
in the garage, stocks of Châteauneuf-du-
Pape in the wine cellar and a high-tech
alarm system. He is always afraid, lives off
luxury microwave meals, drinks the most
expensive red wine chilled, and is com
pletely incapable of enjoying his life. Who is
happier? Mohammed or the lawyer?
What is the greatest treasure in life? The
treasure we all strive for? A fancy villa on
Long Island? A stretch limo full of happy
partying people? A yacht in the Carib-
bean? Diamond necklaces? A handbag
from Hermès? A gold smartphone? A
Nautilus Titanium from Patek Philippe?
No, the greatest treasure in life is calm-
ness and contentment; being at one
with oneself and the universe. Luxuries

that we acquire only to impress others will
not satisfy us. They will only inspire envy and
leave a bitter taste in the mouth.
“Tante Jolesch” (“Aunt Jolesch”), the epony
mous figure in Friedrich Torberg’s collec-
tion of real and apocryphal anecdotes, put
it like this: “Everything that makes a man
better than a monkey is luxury” (“Alles, was
der Mann schöner ist als ein Aff, ist Luxus”).
Luxury is in other words the extra, the super-
fluous. All the same, we no longer sleep on
cave floors or live off sorrel and unseasoned
barley porridge. The search for luxury, for
that extra something, is a product of our civi
lisation: culture. There are also creatures in
the animal kingdom that show off changing
rainbow colours, sing beautiful songs or build
ostentatious nests, but all that is part of the
reproduction process. And for people? For
more than a few of the super rich, a sex life is
something belonging to a bygone millennium
and luxury is at best a substitute for a faded
memory. Yet luxury is there for everyone.
Humans are the only creatures that strive for
luxury, for l’art pour l’art, out of a pleasure in
materials, shapes and beauty. We have won-
derfully designed furniture, jewellery as deli-
cate as a butterfly’s legs, cars like spaceships
from another galaxy, fantastic flavours from
culinary artists who work with the precision

of an apothecary, magical outfits, and the list
goes on. Things that bring us joy because
they are wonderful. They are as necessary
as that which makes us better than apes.
You can be happy with boiled potatoes and
butter. A glass of beer often tastes better
that a five hundred-euro wine, and a bursting
bank account by no means prevents sleep-
less nights. What is important is enjoyment,
and being happy with what you have. If you
do manage to treat yourself, you will find so
many special things and see the beauty in
– and love – life. Contentment and the abili-
ty to enjoy is all that we need. But a little lu
xury does no harm. You don’t need to make a
monkey of yourself. STOP

Enjoy the Red Bull Kiwi Twist created spe-
cially for the summer, and think of sunshine
filtering through the treetops, the heat rising
over a sandy beach and the indescribable
feeling of having absolutely nothing you need
to do. For a small, select group of guests at
the mountain bike Hotel Eder in Maria Alm
am Hochkönig, the taste of this summer
energy booster recalls very special memo
ries: of a day with the world speed bike
champion Markus Stöckl, of unforgettable
views and experiences, and of a great feel
ing of achievement. The trip, together with a
weekend in Hotel Eder, was the first prize in
the summer competition run by Red Bull and
the Lifestylehotels.
Doubly expert
The group set out straight from Maria Alm
under the professional instruction of Red Bull
athlete Stöckl, who has in the past mastered
the most daring downhill runs on rock, snow
and scree. They headed for Saalfelden, into
the Kalmbachgraben and over the Hochreith
to Kronreithhütte hut – for a lunch break with
a breathtaking panorama. At lunch, Markus
Stöckl was able to offer his expertise in two
areas: as a top mountain biker, and as a
trained chef who once contributed his reci-
pe for “Karamellisierter Apfelschmarrn à la
Oma” (“Grandmother’s caramelised apple
‘Schmarrn’”) to the Red Bull athletes’ cook-
book. “Schmarrn” – a fluffy dish of chopped
up pancakes – was also served on the bike
trip with apple sauce. However, the keen
amateur bikers were not that interested in
Markus Stöckl the chef; their questions were
all about two wheels – and how you become
a champion on them.
Rested and refreshed, they then headed
downhill back to Maria Alm, a bit more slow-
ly and definitively more circuitously than on
Stöckl’s usual runs. But there was little time
for a breather – from Maria Alm, the route
then went back uphill on the “Natrun” for
technique training on the FlowOne flow trail.
This single trail starts at the top station of the
cable railway and winds down around 285
metres over a distance of more than two kilo-
metres through forests and meadows into the
valley. What’s so great about it: it is as much a
treat for beginners as it is for experts.
Impressing the professional
If you want to hone your technique, indivi
dual advice is best, and that is exactly what
Markus Stöckl gave his group. “I thought the
trip was super. Markus really took time for
us, responded to every single question, and
repeatedly demonstrated just what is pos-
sible on a bike.” This amazement at what a
bike can do came not from a beginner, quite
the opposite. The surprised participant who
was so impressed with Markus Stöckl was
the bike guide Max Klein. Not only does
Klein take Hotel Eder guests cross-coun-
try around the Hochkönig, he is himself a
seven-time Bavarian road race, track and
time trial champion, and two-times German
champion in the four-man team road time
trial. Even for him, the professional, there
were some inspiring tips.
Après-bike with a twist
For real athletes, no trip is complete without
après-bike. “We watched videos of Markus
Stöckl’s record runs and then ate together
and talked shop”, recounted one participant.
The Red Bull Twist was of course served, at
the perfect temperature and with fresh fruit.
Hotel Eder in Maria Alm is not the only “hotel
with a Twist” – or hotel that serves the ultimate

for mountain bike enthusiasts; after all, it is

Nothing could be better than deep pow-
der snow … and hello, I’m making the first
tracks. Awesome!!!
Sweeping downhill through untouched
deep powder snow – for example on the
Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun – is the stuff of
dreams for any freestyle fan. The Zell am

and the common sense of the freeriders
who use it ensure that for all their dream
ing, they keep their feet on the ground. For
hitting the slopes in the backcountry is only
really to be recommended on one condition:
excellent preparation – including for off-piste
conditions. Technique, skill and informa
tion are not the only grounding factors. En-
counters are also important, for example
in Lederer’s Living, the smart little ski hotel
right in centre of Kaprun. The Lederers are
the perfect friendly hosts, committed to the
well-being and comfort of their guests: from
the excellent breakfast and the lounge with
its crackling hearth, to the penthouse sau-
na with views of the Kitzsteinhorn that will
beckon again tomorrow.
There are plenty of fish in the sea, and that
can also apply to ski resorts. Saalbach-
Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn sounds
big – and it is. As you would expect, Austria’s
largest ski resort has something for every
one (270! kilometres of pistes and 70 lifts).
Not for nothing is the resort slogan “Home
of lässig” – “The home of cool”: the Rave on
Snow (the country’s largest winter clubbing
event that runs from 8th
to 11th
December) is
just one highlight. Others are the boarders
with their exciting moves in three absolutely
amazing snowparks, and boardercross. By
the way: Nightpark Saalbach is the perfect
“habitat” for the night owls among the boards
(and their riders). And when rider and board
are finally ready for bed, a good night’s sleep
in peace and quiet is guaranteed in the po-
wer sleeping rooms at the Alpin Juwel in
Saalbach-Hinterglemm – and completely
free from radiation. Absolute wellness is
the hotel’s speciality: the AJ-Veda Spa with
pools, saunas, yoga and gym facilities is a
treat for body and soul, as is the healthy Aus-
trian cuisine with regional produce.
How tiresome it used to be: pulling on your
hard, ice-cold ski boots. Whomp. Whomp.
Whomp. Sniff. Already in a sweat after a
couple of steps. And still ten minutes to the
lift – whomp. Whomp. Whomp. Aaargh!
What now? Slide. Clack. Slide. Clack. Creak.
Creak. Clack. Clack. And then: Swoosh!
There’s a lot to be said for ski-in-ski-out: sim-
ply slip into your bindings at the door and set
off, no stress – why not head straight for the
piste? For example from Hotel PURADIES
in Leogang: its private run takes you right to
the Steinbergbahn lift. You can then enjoy
Alpine skiing in all its glory on the perfectly
prepared pistes in Saalbach-Hinterglemm-
Leogang-Fieberbrunn ski resort. After a
wonderful day out, you can unwind in the
“Innere Mitte” PURADIES bathing house and
enjoy the amazing mountain panorama once
again from one of four different saunas. After
an excellent dinner from gourmet chef Andrè
Stahl you can get some well-earned rest in
your luxurious PURADIES chalet.
Even further west, winter has a lot to re-
commend it. For example in Ötztal, Tyrol’s
highest skiing resort with snow guaranteed.
Amidst 250 peaks over 3000 metres, this is
the perfect place to swing, glide, walk and
climb – in winter, this last of course on the
ice. Adventurous city visitors seek the ser-
vice of experienced professional guides. Or
they take the easier option and do what their
doctors at home never tire of advising: run.
A marked winter running trail of an incredible
total length of 40 kilometres winds through
this amazing snowy landscape. And if the
running route isn’t giving you that real winter
feeling, why not head for one of the great
range of pistes: 110 kilometres with 35 easy
and 20 difficult pistes – one of the most
challenging is at Hohe Mut (literally “Great
Courage”) alm. You can “pluck up” what it
takes, can’t you? The best place to start is in
the spa at “The Crystal” hotel in Obergurgl:
private spa suites, the gym, pools and sau-
nas make for perfect physical preparation
and ultimate relaxation. The Alpine cuisine
wine are a gourmet treat – this is The Crystal
Lifestyle. And all this is just a stone’s throw
from the Obergurgl pistes, which sweep
from the magnificent 3000 m peaks down

zai skis are different. Always a ski length – or
an entire piste – ahead of the field in develop
ment … Each new model is the product of
zai’s own research and innovation. “Quite
often, we are the first to use a particular ma-
terial for skis”, explains Simon Jacomet, the
premium Swiss ski-maker’s founder and de-
signer. The products have to be “zai”: literally
“tough” – durable and able to withstand the
harshest of conditions. They also have to be
uniquely flexible to offer skiers the greatest
possible freedom.
A zai ski is amazingly versatile in the truest
sense of the word, but it is also reduced to
the essentials. From cedar wood to stone
and unique carbon fibres, each material
used fulfils a specific function: nothing is
superfluous. The same applies to the ski’s
appearance. Clean lines, classic colours
and nothing that doesn’t need to be there.
A harmonious combination of eastern Zen
philosophy and ski design.
Nature high-tech
For all their Far Eastern flair, nothing could be
more practical than the skis’ development.
zai literally keeps its feet (skis) on the ground:
“Every single part of our skis is produced in
Disentis, in the heart of the Swiss Alps”, says
Jacomet. On the very mountainside where
they need to perform in practice – in the snow,
in the ice, in the firn … zai skis are tested on
the slopes right from the development phase.
Developing products so close to their place
of use results in amazing flexibility: skis are
tested at each stage of development and in
all conditions. If improvements are required,
the ski is modified by the local specialists re-
sponsible for the manual work that accounts
for half of the production process for each zai
ski. Everyone who works here was skiing ever
since they could say “snow”.
Disentis might not be the perfect produc-
tion site in economic terms, but it offers the
best possible testing conditions. zai skis
combine the benefits of genuine, specialist
manual production with those of high-tech
equipment – and of a laboratory that has al-
ready adapted more than one material for a
completely new application.
Anyone who has the strength and staying
power and a hard enough heart to cut open
a zai ski will find both natural products, in
the form of granite, cedar wood, Dyneema®
fibres and vulcanised rubber, and high-tech
materials also used in the aerospace indus-
try. The tensile force of Dyneema®
fibres is
hard to beat. Other applications include bul-
let-proofing aeroplane cockpit doors. Abso-
lutely “zai” materials are used in the skis of
the same name.
The luxury of time
Even once a model is already being pro-
duced in series, the staff at zai spend that
luxury, time, on each individual ski: it takes
7 to 15 hours until a pair of skis is ready for
the piste, while a pair of standard skis of-
ten leaves the conveyor belt in 30 minutes.
Yet the hours invested pay off, and give zai
skiers countless unforgettable moments on
the slopes. While a conventional ski loses a
fourth of its tension after 30 days’ use, a zai
still has 95 percent of its tension after 100
days.

In LustBOXX at DAS KRONTHALER hotel in
Achenkirch, Tyrol, Poet Audio already has its
own stylish presentation area, where poet-
one, pandoretta and fonetta are available
to admire and test. Operation is strikingly
simple: wake up, standby, signal. The sound
is extremely pure – even at very high vol
umes. The design is elegant and time
less. Set to a moderate volume, the music
from the poet-one covers over 300 square
metres in the shopping facility at DAS
KRONTHALER – and can be heard equally
well from everywhere thanks to the advan-
ced ultra-pure mono sound.
In 2016, a crowd funding project allowed
the Graz sound experts to acquire new cli-
ents. Two new Poet boutiques will soon be
opening in Vienna and Graz. Version 4.0 is
currently state of the art. But it is only one
stage in development, for “the concept of
