LIFESTYLEHOTELS THE BOOK 11TH EDITION
LIFESTYLEHOTELS We are talking about one-of-a-kind, hotel masterpieces. We call them LIFESTYLEHOTELS. These are not the products of the conveyor belt approach or the dictates of market research. LIFESTYLEHOTELS reflect the passion and enthusiasm of their owners, who are usually themselves the managers.
LIFESTYLEHOTELS are examples of wonderful architecture and unique design – and design that is not just
about décor, furniture and accessories. Design also means
the services offered, and the welcome and hospitality
guests receive. Another special feature of LIFESTYLEHOTELS is their close connection to the atmosphere of the city or region in which they are situated. This, too, has a lot to do with the owners: they love the place as much as their hotel. A traveller who enters one of these hotels has really arrived, in the truest sense of the word. The hotel is no isolated island cut off from the life of the region. It is an integral part of that life. It is a place that the locals also love, where they feel at home and come to celebrate at the restaurant or bar. Guests are therefore immediately at the heart of things, not strangers, not ‚foreigners‘. They belong. They are part of life there – a life with the luxury that the traveller deserves. We have made it our mission to discover LIFESTYLEHOTELS; we are our customers‘ ‚truffle hunters‘ or ‚diamond prospectors‘. Each hotel on the LIFESTYLEHOTELS platform has been carefully selected. The platform currently lists around 120 hotels, and this list will not significantly expand over the years to come. Why? Because we understand growth in qualitative, not quantitative terms. Because we only list hotels that we ourselves find inspiring. Because we are not here to sell rooms: we seek to offer a very special new experience.
All LIFESTYLEHOTELS are now being published in a
book for the eleventh time – because they deserve to
be presented in a format that is as special as they are.
Browse these pages, and take a journey through Europe
and the world. Discover a yen for surprises, discoveries and new encounters. And forget the introduction, or at least in part: this book makes LIFESTYLEHOTELS very easy to find. But unique and special they certainly remain.

So our secret tip is this – ask your hotelier what sort of secrets can be discovered around your holiday resort. With a bit of luck, they’ll give you insider knowledge that you can’t find on websites and in travel guides.

Welcome.
Journeys are always made in faith and anticipation. A belief in images, reports and
recommendations - promises that raise certain expectations. These expectations are
often met, indeed often exceeded, but can also be disappointed. And that is not because
the promises are not true. It is because those making them have other values
and other ideas. Because they live in a different world.
You can, however, always rely on promises made by a soul mate. A soul mate sees and
experiences the world just as you do. This magazine aims to be your soul mate. That is
a challenge, and only you can decide whether we meet it.
The first issue focuses on life in the Alps at the interface of untamed nature and guaranteed
visitor enjoyment, where a centuries-old tradition meets modern interpretation.
Travel with us through the Alpine regions for a taste of what the Alps can offer. Let us
whet your appetite for the rich range of sporting and cultural activities. Discover the contrasts
of the Alpine winter - regions where winter is summer or spring.
And if your Soul Mate has you hooked, you can continue your journey online. Your destination:

THE Stylemate - nobody believed it - issue 02 | 2020THE Stylemate
When it felt like the world was changing
constantly from one minute to the next, and
it seemed that any long-term plans would
have to be thrown out the window, we joined
the journey into the unknown and decided
to make this issue of THE Stylemate more
spontaneous and experimental. You’ll see
that there isn’t a person looking up at you
from the front cover as usual – instead, we
commissioned emerging artist Alessandro
Painsi to think about creating something
different for it. Bar a couple of general
pointers like “maybe something with text”
and “it should be about people”, he was
otherwise given free rein. You can see
the result of this creative freedom now if
you turn back a page. It says, very simply,
“nobody believed it – faith”. This inspired
us to reply “but we did do”, as you can see
written boldly on this page. It is important
for us to add at this stage: we believe that
everything will be OK, because we believe in
people and have faith in what they do, and
that’s what this issue of THE Stylemate is
all about. We discuss human nature and
talk about people and what they do, what
they dream about, what inspires them and
what drives them. They are people that
inspire faith, both in themselves and in
others. We’ve also experimented with the
cover story, in which we present work by
photographer Mathilde Karrèr, whose image
titles resonate with the theme of the article.
But there’s no need to say any more here.
Keep turning the page and have faith that
you’ll find some wonderful stories to read.
Fulfill your dream of a holiday apartment in Andermatt, the traditional mountain village in the heart of Switzerland. Andermatt is a place where you can breathe in the fresh alpine air and stay relaxed within a most fascinating setting.
Andermatt has become a year-round destination in recent years: apartment buildings, hotels and chalets, the seemingly Scottish 18-hole golf course, which offers golfers a welcome challenge, and the SkiArena, which is not just the most modern ski resort Switzerland but also the largest in Central Switzerland, with slopes from Andermatt to Sedrun and Disentis.
Lifescapes Mirage is a rarity in every sense, its location gives it a towering presence. By virtue of being strategically & conveniently located in Matunga, you are close to Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, Bandra Worli Sea Link, BKC, the Western and Central Suburbs.

What is worth striving for? Success, power, happiness,
love, recognition? Love, for sure, and probably happiness as
well. But why not also strive for clarity? In our increasingly
complicated world, having an unclouded view of things is
a huge advantage. We need to learn to understand relationships
in a new way – and increase what we demand of
everyone. Life is becoming more and more complex, so it’s
good to have a clear head. To be able to speak using clear
language. But also to be clear about what we want.
In this issue of THE Stylemate, we’re talking about clarity.
We want to hear clear language from people so we’re able to
understand better. We want to have a clear head so we can
have a better grasp on the world, as we find ourselves in an
increasingly swift state of transition.
We want to see clear lines in architecture and follow clear
visions. Because one thing is clear: nothing ever stays the
same. That’s what makes it so important to have an unclouded
view of the world. And this view of the world is our greatest
passion.
Wonach lohnt es sich zu streben? Nach Erfolg, nach Macht,
nach Glück, nach Liebe oder nach Anerkennung? Nach Liebe
definitiv, nach Glück wahrscheinlich auch. Warum aber nicht
nach Klarheit streben? In unserer zunehmend
komplexeren
Where does the world flourish? How far into the future do you have to look if you want to know how the world evolves? Which people and companies should we be aware of? What visions should we share and how can we pull together to shape the world? We have many questions on our minds, and we hope that we can provide a few answers in this issue of THE Stylemate. For this reason, we’ve set our sights on Mexico, because we believe that’s where you can see clearly what tourism will and should look like. We establish that there are passionate people who have learnt to listen to their conscience and then act accordingly. Future researcher Christiane Varga shares with us her vision for the world – will she be proved right? We are of the opinion that a form of community concept would encourage beautiful flowers to blossom. A concept that provides answers to questions like “How do I manage to bring people together, allow them to take part in something real?”, “How can a concept, an idea be developed through participation?”, “How does something new emerge from passionate, interested, genuine people?”. Because that might just be what makes a difference in future: involving people and not AI.
When the world around us becomes more turbulent, we search
for harmony and balance in the small things, within ourselves.
It’s balance we need so that our own world doesn’t fall apart at the
seams. In Japan, this is called “nagomi”, which refers to a holistic
way of life shaped by harmony and balance.
Japanese neuroscientist Ken Mogi, who we’ve interviewed for this
issue, explains how you can live a balanced life thanks to nagomi –
balanced meaning that things aren’t great all of the time. Quite the
opposite: in order to have balance, both extremes of an emotion or
situation have to exist. To have fortune in life there must also be
misfortune, for love there has to be loss, for fun there has to be work
and for altruism there has to be selfishness. Zest for life, or to put
it more strongly true happiness, occurs when you manage to accept
all facets of life and bring them into balance.
Nagomi is a way of life that shows us what makes us more resilient,
what benefits us in our relationships and everyday lives. What else
does us good? Discovering the world by travelling, meeting new
people and interacting with them. What we need is the feeling
of connectedness. Especially when so much of what’s around us is
uncertain.

THE Stylemate issue 03|2021 - into the futureTHE Stylemate
Our future seems more uncertain than ever, and even harder to predict. The small-scale way to look at it is in terms of what the winter will bring for tourism, while the broader question is a matter of considering the climate crisis. That’s why we’ve made the future the topic of this issue of THE Stylemate.
THE Stylemate issue 03|2021 - into the futureTHE Stylemate
THE Stylymate, Issue 02|2021 think! and then act rightsTHE Stylemate
Versand.
think! and then act right. ist der Titel dieser Ausgabe:
In unseren LIFESTYLEHOTELS sowieso.
Issue No. 02/2021 | 40 Seiten
THE Stylymate, Issue 02|2021 think! and then act rightsTHE Stylemate
This issue's topic is: think! and then act right.
There doesn't seem to be an innocent light-heartedness anymore. We also have these thoughts, and it's this "contemplation" that we've devoted this issue to.
We met free-diver and environmental activist Christian Redl, who supports the protection of the sea through his “7Oceans“ project. We spoke to him about climate change, ghost nets, overfishing and the plundering of the world’s oceans. What is there to be positive about? The fact that Christian Redl believes there is a solution to every problem.
We also want to believe that. And it gets easier when you consider the many people who try to make a difference through their work. Day in, day out. We’ve invited chefs Stefanie Herkner and Paul Ivic for an interview, taken a look around the new Green Pea shopping centre in Turin, which is entirely dedicated to sustainability, and got to know several sustainable fashion labels a little better.
There are also many special characters in craft and design with ideas along the right lines – as there are at our LIFESTYLEHOTELS. Once again, we’ve been lucky enough to get to know some incredibly interesting people who we’ve been able to contemplate with. Because that’s what matters: not eliminating things but rather acting consciously and naturally. Preferably all together.
But first of all, we hope we can encourage you to contemplate with our “thoughtful” issue.
THE Stylemate, Issue 01|2021: a time between times THE Stylemate
In our last issue, we used this page to write about our hopes and dreams for the future. We were somewhat hopeful that the next time we came to write this passage, we would be a bit closer to reaching them than where we find ourselves now. But where are we, actually?
THE Stylemate - was ist es wert? issue 03|2020THE Stylemate
was uns wichtig ist, wann etwas Wert
besitzt und welche Vorstellungen von Wert
es gibt. Dazu zeigen wir auf dem Cover ein
Bild des österreichischen Künstlers Martin
Grandits, der in seinen Arbeiten auf sehr
humorvolle Weise mit diesem Thema spielt.
Womit wir auch beim zweiten Schwerpunkt
unserer Ausgabe wären: Österreich. So oft
Stolz. Wir haben viele tolle Gespräche mit
interessanten Persönlichkeiten geführt und
dabei versucht, den Wert von Dingen zu
erörtern. Mit Innovationsconsultant Mario
Pricken haben wir deswegen über den Wert
von Objekten und die Veränderung unseres
Wertekompasses durch Covid-19 gesprochen,
mit Wiener Weinhändlern über das „Kellergold“
und die Emotionen, die es wecken
kann und mit dem Grazer Designer Lukas
Klingsbichel über den Wert der Funktion
und den bedachten Einsatz von Materialien.
Ihnen allen bedeutet das, was sie machen,
unglaublich viel und die Wertschätzung, die
sie gegenüber ihrer Tätigkeit empfinden, ist
im Vordergrund. Und damit ist eigentlich
schon viel verraten, über den wahren Wert
der Dinge.
THE Stylemate - what is of value to us? issue 03|2020THE Stylemate
The year 2020 is drawing to a close and
most people probably have the same thing
on their minds – mostly, wishing for the
arrival of the New Year. We hope we’ll be able
to overcome Covid-19, and that this period
of worry and uncertainty that far exceeds
normal levels will soon be a thing of the past.
We’re dreaming of once more being able to
move around freely, to travel and to meet
new people. To discover new places and to
feel unlimited well-being when we get there.
In this issue, we have reflected on what is
important to us, when something has value
and what notions of value there are. Our
cover shows an image by Austrian artist
Martin Grandits, who deals with this topic
in a humorous way in his works. And that
takes us onto the second theme of this
issue: Austria. So often (and so readily) we
have looked beyond the horizon in previous
issues of THE Stylemate and explored
the whole wide world. But this time, we
contemplate what’s closer to home, and
we do it with great passion and no small
amount of pride. We’ve had many great
conversations with interesting people, and
attempted to debate the value of things.
We talked with innovation consultant Mario
Pricken about the value of objects and the
change in our value compass caused by
Covid-19, with Viennese wine merchants
about “cellar secrets” and the emotions they
can evoke, and with Graz-based designer
Lukas Klingsbichel about the value of the
function and mindful use of materials.
For all of them, the most important things
are those that they do often, and the sense
of value they find in their occupations.
And that reveals a lot about the true value
of things.

the journey into the unknown and decided
to make this issue of THE Stylemate more
spontaneous and experimental. You’ll see
that there isn’t a person looking up at you
from the front cover as usual – instead, we
commissioned emerging artist Alessandro

And that reveals a lot about the true value
of things.
THE Stylemate - nobody believed it - issue 02 | 2020 DeutschTHE Stylemate
Nachdem die Welt sich gerade von Minute
zu Minute verändert und langfristige Pläne
für eine Weile ausgedient haben, so scheint
es, haben auch wir beschlossen, bei dieser
Ausgabe von THE Stylemate manche Dinge
frei in seinem Schaffen. Das Ergebnis sehen
Sie nun, wenn Sie wieder zurückblättern.
So steht da nun geschrieben: „nobody
believed it – faith“. Und aus diesem Grund
können Sie auf dieser Seite in fetten Lettern
lesen „but we did do“.
eintauchen.
THE Stylemate - wabi sabi 01|2020 DeutschTHE Stylemate
aufregende japanische Perlen zeigen lassen.
berichten.
Und natürlich gibt es wieder ausgewählte Hotels,
die Sie zum Reisen inspirieren sollen.

THE Stylemate - wabi sabi 01|2020 ENGLISHTHE Stylemate
Wabi-sabi, finding beauty in imperfection, is a Japanese
concept of aesthetic values that we really like and wish to
embrace. This issue of THE Stylemate is dedicated to all things
Japan and we have put together a selection of many beautiful
things for you to enjoy, some of which are virtually perfect,
while others are so interesting that that could be deemed as
their version of beauty. The reason for orienting our focus on
Japan and the Japanese culture is that this summer will see
Tokyo playing host to the Olympic Games. Our cover is more
unusual than sporty, but we think it is the perfect example
of the concept of wabi-sabi. Successful Japanese artist Yayoi
Kusama is known for her polka dots that have the capacity to
put us into an almost trance-like state and convey the feeling
of obsession, and this spring will be presenting a huge show in
The New York Botanical Garden. Information and photos that
have already been released to the press indicate that it will be
something quite extraordinary. So we’re not just looking at
Japan in Japan, but also at Japan around the world.
In this respect, we have chatted to Vienna resident and lighting
designer Megumi Ito, and asked an Austrian jeweller to show
us some exciting Japanese pearls. We write about how we in
Europe can be inspired by unusual culinary delicacies from
Japan, and which designers and fashion stores in Tokyo you
absolutely have and visit. Helder Suffenplan, a publicist
living in Berlin, talks in his column about fragrance and his
love of Japan – he will also report in future issues on the world
of olfactory delights.
And of course, we have the usual selection of hotels that are
sure to inspire you to get out and travel.

THE Stylemate - fancy adventures 02|2019THE Stylemate

We love print! And we express that love of printed paper with every issue of THE Stylemate. However, we can’t deny the need for a digital presence. We are not even trying to. On the contrary, we are believers in the coexistence of printed and digital media both now and in the future. That is why we have just launched the “thestylemate.com blog” – with a lot of great stories and things from around the world that make life even more beautiful. Speaking of beauty, you will also discover a host of beautiful things in this issue of THE Stylemate, which is dedicated to design. The eccentric lady with the spectacular sunglasses on the front cover is the famous art patron Peggy Guggenheim. She shaped Venice not just with her Guggenheim collection but also and above all during her lifetime with her very personality. We find the way she did so – namely with an exceptional sense of quality and a liking for the ironic and absurd – absolutely impressive and want to bring that to the page. We also like putting strong women on the cover.

There are moments when you got the feeling that time
stands still. You have landed in a space-time vacuum in
which everything before and everything after does not exist.
It is the moment in which you have landed in the „now“
and experience the present very consciously. This is what
happens when you have found a place that is the only right
place at that specific time.
This described phenomenon usually comes over us when
we are traveling. When we find ourselves in a place where
we see our own personality reflected. In the 17th edition
of „The Book“ we show you such places. They are hotels
that revolve around good ideas, outstanding experiences,
attentive staff and above all people, who are passionate
about what they do. They create a gateway to adventure,
relaxation, new experiences and to ourselves.
The next journey is only a few pages away. Let the feeling
wash over you that comes from discovering a place that
you know you must see with your own eyes. There are
many places to which one feels attracted, although they

Surrounded by books and silence
A house that is completely dedicated to books, listening,
reading, reading aloud, writing and thinking in connection
with dialogue and play. Together with the designer Gregor
Wöckel and the company Unykat, a sustainable book-affine
design was realised. As „Zweimalschön“, 20 Viennese ho-
tel rooms on the mountain experience a resurrection. The
ergonomic plug-and-play reading bed can be moved freely
in the room and is optimised for the reading voice with
an acoustic device. The personal book bar is individually
stocked with new publications and can be taken any-
where from the room. Fancy even more books? Browse the
vertically laid out library that spans four floors. The unique

At the Lesehotel, 16 rooms and 4 suites are constantly sto-
cked with new publications from 20 selected publishers.
In the roof suites, guests float in reading nests above the
valley and enjoy optimal reading conditions in any weather.
A paradise for reading enthusiasts and people who long
for peace and relaxation. The breathtaking view over Lake
Hallstatt and the Dachstein Glacier makes a stay at the
Lesehotel a pleasure in any case.
Finding yourself
The Lesehotel in the Salzkammergut has set itself the
task of helping guests find themselves in peace and quiet.
The silence on the mountain, the darkness at night, which
makes it possible to see the starry splendour of the Milky
Way, are intensified by the sensitive design. The guests
are sovereign and decide situationally: starting with the
position of the plug&play reading bed in the room, the
selection of books in the room and the freely chosen level
of service.
At the Lesehotel, guests have absolute freedom to choose
how they would like to organise their stay. Breakfast is
available all day, even in the room. In the guest kitchen,
guests can cook together or book a chef to cook with them
- surrounded by more cookery books than the guests can
read! Or you can let yourself be pampered all around - just
as it feels good at the moment. The house and garden
belong to the guests as if they were visiting friends.
BEST ROOM
In the Suhrkamp Suite you can enjoy a breathtaking pano-
ramic view of Lake Hallstatt and the Dachstein Glacier. Float
at the highest point of the house and enjoy the exclusive
balcony across the entire width of the room. Your stay will
be a unique pleasure thanks to the new publications of the
Suhrkamp publishing house! Thanks to the ergonomically
shaped backrest of the Plug&Play reading bed, you can
let yourself be read to for hours and enjoy your breakfast,
snacks and excellent wine in your suite.

A PLACE OF INSPIRATION
LESEHOTEL
When your gaze is captivated by Lake Hallstatt and the Dachstein glacier, all you want to do is
sit and look. The silence up on the mountain below the summit is exactly what guests of the
Lesehotel crave on a short holiday for rest and relaxation. The increasing complexity of the
network society makes people experience a deep need for relaxation and inner peace. It is
precisely this longing that the Lesehotel meets as a cross-industry innovation project when it
connects publishers with readers.
1 5
Reading enthusiasts look forward to the
vertical library - over four floors, the central
staircase circles a library of classics, bestsel-
lers and the books that have been displaced by
the novelties in the publishing rooms. Guests
also enjoy the new publications that are always
waiting to be discovered in the house in more
than ample selection.
„20 selected publishers inspire and delight
readers in 20 rooms. This way, guests can
immerse themselves in a different world with
every visit.“
The Lesehotel offers the ideal combination of
reading with mountain biking, climbing, hiking,
cross-country skiing or snowshoeing or - watch
out for the highlight: reading and cooking! The
Reading Hotel not only offers a dining room full
of cookbooks, it also allows guests to recreate
what they have just read together with friends
or a dedicated cooking coach! Of course, the
hotel does the dishes and guests enjoy selec-
ted wines from Austrian vintners.
Pure relaxation
The relaxing effect of reading has been scienti-
fically proven. With the Plug&Play reading and
reading aloud bed, the Lesehotel offers just the
right setting for this. Thanks to the ergonomic
backrest and the acoustic device optimised for
the human voice, you can let yourself be read
to for hours while enjoying the breathtaking
view. You can indulge in daydreams or simply
read. In any case, at an altitude of just over a
thousand metres, you will find exactly what
you have been looking for: Pure relaxation!
Dr. Silke Seemann, economist and also
operator of the Hallstatt Hideaway (see page
53), researches social change and asks quite
pragmatically about the effect on tourism to
keep surprising her guests with new products:
„People need places of retreat that simulta-
neously take them out of everyday life and
lead them into inner peace. The Lesehotel will
be a place of retreat, encounter and exchange.
In any case, a place of inspiration.“
Here and now
Hotels are places that celebrate the tempo-
rary! This is precisely why they are so well
suited for engaging in intensities that one does
not dare to experience in everyday life. The
Lesehotel celebrates this momentum and at
the same time offers the framework to recover
physically to the maximum without sacrificing
the basic creative tension.
„We‘ve all had the experience of how much an
exciting book can take us away from our hectic
everyday lives and relax us so wonderfully!“
The Lesehotel is a place of retreat where one
can meet and rediscover oneself. We often
lose ourselves in the hectic demands of rest-
less everyday life. At the same time, however,
we long for exchange, resonance and encoun-
ter. As well the Lesehotel offers the opportu-
nity to exchange ideas with other guests about
what they have read and to inspire each other.
„The book bar is equipped with books, reading
glasses, water bottle, writing utensils, note-
book and reading light individually for each
guest. It can be carried around the house, as
a very private side table. It serves as an active
means of communication: if a book is placed
on the reading light at arm‘s length, it is an
invitation: I would like to talk about this book!
Anyone who feels like it, can take the book,
read it and then offer to talk. If the book holder
is in a low position, it means: I want to read in
peace.“
Read and enjoy
The Berghof, which dates back to the 1970s,
has been restored to its former glory. A consci-
ous decision was made not to build a new buil-
ding. Here, life can be reflected and dreams
can be made! Both the silence of the forest and
the darkness of the night with the radiance of
the stars make it easy to detach oneself from
everyday life and turn to that which is waiting
to be discovered as potential in everyone.

The landscape flickers past rapidly before
the train starts to slow down with a groan,
as if it is reluctant to reduce its speed. We’ve
arrived at the station in Lienz, and we grab
our seven bags and step out onto the plat-

tages. Rather than putting your foot flat to
the floor and racing off on holiday, it allows
you to glide away in a ly fashion accompa-

THE POWER OF THE REGION
in a hybrid car to Kals, where the fresh, clean
air almost overwhelms us – the resort is a
car-free zone.
“We feel indebted to the power of the region
and to sustainability,” says Martha Schultz
in response to the question as to why it was
important to orient their corporate philoso-
phy towards sustainability, regionality and
nature-inspired architecture from the very
beginning. The multi-award-winning, car-free
mountain resort at the gateway to the Hohe
Tauern National Park is home to the hotel,
41 timber-frame chalets and 12 exclusive
suites, and is guaranteed to delight nature
enthusiasts – be it with the food and natural
cosmetic products from local mountain far-
mers, carbon-neutral bio heat produced by
its own wood pellet boiler, charging stations
for electric cars and electric bikes, or its own
fresh spring water sources.
Cheerful marmots and
invigorating mountain air
Even during the construction of the resort,
85% of the total investment was spent within
a 50-kilometre radius and invested in local
materials. Furthermore, all of the timber
buildings were built using wood from local

forests, and the roofs of the chalets were
planted with regional species, meaning the
structures merge into the forest and can
barely be seen from Kals. The architecture
impresses with its clean lines, while mate-
rials such as spruce, arolla pine, linen, loden
cloth and Kals marble bring nature into the
interior. The view to the outside shows that
wherever nature remains untouched, you’ll
be able to see animals. During a guided hike
with a ranger in the Hohe Tauern National
Park, we encounter cheerful marmots, disco-
ver chamois and even spot a golden eagle.

Magdalena’s, which contain herbs from the

of minerals. But the region doesn’t just get
squeezed out of a tube – it’ll also land on
your plate. From the breakfast buffet with
East Tyrolean specialities to midday snacks
and the à la carte evening menu or buffet of
local delicacies – regional produce will be a
treat for your taste buds all day long.
At the end of the holiday, we jump into the
natural bathing pool one last time and soak
up the panoramic mountain view. By the
way, the bathing pool in the garden is hea-
ted by nature as well.
BEAT YOU TO IT!
That’s what you’ll be shouting with glee when you’re able to glide down freshly prepa-
red pistes first thing in the morning, then in the afternoon swing right into the hotel bar.
These and all of our other winter wishes were
granted at the Gradonna Mountain Resort
in the sun-drenched town of Kals am Groß-
glockner. After all, when we’re on holiday we
want everything to be straightforward, espe-
cially in winter when our ski equipment is bul-
ky and our clothes fill more than one suitcase.
The best bit is that we’re staying right on the
slope: no shuttle buses, no trudging through
the snow – simply clip in to your bindings and
enjoy the gentle crunch of the freshly prepa-
red snow on the piste. One of these pistes,
the valley run towards Kals, goes straight
through the Gradonna Mountain Resort past
the hotel and its chalets.

ALL IN ONE PLACE
Here we’re just a step away from the largest
ski area in East Tyrol and will be able to
make the most of the 15 cable cars and lifts
at up to 2,426 metres above sea level. A total
of 42 kilometres of pistes are just waiting to
be discovered, and no matter whether you’re
a pro or a newbie, a snowboarder or a free-
rider, there is guaranteed to be a slope for
everyone. And to top it all off, snow is a given
here until spring.
We found everything straightforward at the
superior four-star resort, and not just because
of the direct access to the pistes and the fact
you can ski in, ski out. We got the equipment
for our sporting adventure right here at the
hotel, for both adults and children, and were
even able to book the little ones into ski school
at the same time. And because the youngsters
just couldn’t wait to get started, we had a go
on the magic carpet behind the hotel, where
the professionals of the future captivated us as
they took their first unsteady turns out on the
snow with huge grins on their faces. Tobog-
ganing, cross-country skiing, ski tours, winter
hiking: at the Gradonna Mountain Resort there
is so much on offer. If the kids don’t want to
go out with you, leave them to let off steam at
the kids club: when we pick them up they tell
us all about their trips to the enchanted forest,
the action-packed adventures in nature and all
the new friends they’ve made in the play area.
After such a diverse programme of activities,
it’s time for the more peaceful part of our holi-
day. We definitely still want to have a go at the
family yoga, swim a couple of laps of the pool
and try out the slide in the family area.
Before dinner, and after so much physical
exertion, we schedule in a relaxing massage,
which includes access to the sauna after-
wards. That’s how couples and families alike
can achieve a balance between adventure and
relaxation at the Gradonna – it’s really quite
straightforward.

PUR A DIE S | RUS T IC LUXURY
Your own little hut from which to go off and
enjoy skiing and hiking – for many, that sounds
like a dream. And sometimes a hut sounds
a long way off luxury. It’s different at the
Puradies nature resort, which boasts seve-
ral four-star chalets to choose from that will
comfortably sleep up to six people. The luxury
huts have been constructed in an organic way
using lots of wood and will ensure a total sense
of well-being from the minute you arrive to the
minute you leave. It’s almost as if you were at
home, but then again, nothing like it – becau-
se here, you can have your organic breakfast
brought right to your chalet in the morning, so
you can sit by the open fire, flick through the
newspaper or let your gaze meander across
the view of the Salzburgerland region. It makes
for a fortifying start to the day. No matter
whether you then venture out onto the 270
kilometres of ski runs in the Skicircus Saal-
bach Hinterglemm resort (remember: ski in,
ski out) or would prefer a romantic sleigh ride,
as long as the sun is shining, no one can resist
the snowy winter wonderland that’s right on
your doorstep. The crunch of your shoes gently
sinking into the snow, the warmth of the sun
on your face, the choice between adventures
on the slopes and the tranquillity of nature…
RUSTIC LUXURY
A holiday in a hut evokes images of a rustic atmosphere – a four-star hotel, on the other hand,
is all about luxury. You’ll find both of these in the cosy chalets at the Puradies nature resort,
where you can spend your holiday in private as a couple or as a family, and enjoy unobtrusive
luxury combined with sleek, alpine flair.

The Puradies is a small slice of paradise in the
middle of the immense Salzburg mountain
landscape.
As a chalet guest, you’ll also be spoilt for
choice when it comes to cuisine: will you go
for choosing from over 300 regional products
in the hotel grocers, then enjoying a glass of
wine and some local cheese in your chalet, or
would you rather opt for the hotel’s own gour-
met restaurant ESS:ENZ, which is right next
door? There, you will savour natural cuisine
on another level: homemade pasta, truffles,
dry-aged steak, rainbow trout from Saalfelden
and radish sorbet. With delicacies like these,
even dinner will become an unforgettable
experience. Afterwards, why not try one of the
Alps-inspired drinks with wild herbs from the
mountain pastures and the forest around the
hotel, served in the open area in the hotel bar.
It’s worth taking a closer look around, as the
bar and seating areas are made out of around
16,000 cubes of oak that combine together
to form a cohesive work of art that won the
German Design Award 2018. And speaking of
a “cohesive work of art”: that would also be the
best description for this spectacular location,
where nature can be experienced with all of
the senses and our dream of a luxury holiday in
a hut comes true. Just like paradise.

EXCLUSIVE RELAXATION
It’s Friday and travelling is hungry work, so af-
ter a warm greeting at the reception of the Eli-
sabethHotel in Mayrhofen, we tuck in straight
away to a fortifying lunchtime snack. We’re
served a cold meal prepared using regional
ingredients, several of which are produced by
the hotel itself, and soup. We taste our way
through bacon and cheese from the local area,
as well as delicious homemade cake and stru-
del. Back in reception, we’d already glanced
over to the Club, which is furnished with luxuri-
ous leather sofas from Bielefelder Werkstätten
and Florentine glass light fittings by Banci, just
as we had been told. We’ll be sure to pay it
another visit during the weekend.
But right now we don’t feel like having a rest,
so we hop onto some electric bikes instead
and head off on a bike tour – the staff at recep-
tion prepared some great recommendations
for us. We decide to set off for the Speicher-
see in the wild and romantic Stilluptal, a valley
that’s located in the Zillertal Alps Nature Park,
and ride until we reach the Stillupspeicher
reservoir.

When we arrive back at the ElisabethHotel
later on, we round off our active afternoon with
a dip in the basalt pool. The perfect end to
this first day is a candle-lit dinner in one of the
cosy restaurant lounges. While we’re eating
in the Herzerlstube (Heart Lounge), we have
plenty of time to marvel at the antique silver
heart-shaped ornaments dating from a bygone
era that are displayed on the walls. Soothing
piano music is the ideal accompaniment to our
evening, and it’s still tinkling away in our ears
when we get into bed.
Tired legs and refreshing drinks
On Saturday morning, it’s all about getting up
that mountain! We grab our rucksacks and
start the ascent to the Olpererhütte. Situa-
ted at 2,389 metres above sea level, the hut
looks out over the Schlegeisspeicher body of
water in the Zillertal Alps and makes all the
physical exertion worthwhile. We order Kai-

and enjoy the view of the Zillertal 3000 ski
area. Upon our return to the ElisabethHotel,
we can feel that our calves are worn out so
we decide to bring them back to life with a
massage in the Elisense Treatment Area. The
interesting architecture of the Elisense spa
provides ample space and tranquillity with
saunas, steam baths and the basalt pool,
while the water beds in the quiet room allow

cocktails on the hotel terrace.
Romantic garden and distillery
We also watched evening become night the
day before, so we order breakfast in bed on
Sunday morning. Our 48 hours are almost
up, but we decide to make the most of the
time we have left. For us, that means going
for a walk around the romantic garden and
taking deep breaths of the lovely clean air.
It’s a tough place to leave, so we soften the
blow by visiting the Zillertal Bier brewery
and pick up some souvenirs to take home. At
least that way we’ll still be able to relive a bit
of our fabulous stay at the ElisabethHotel in
Mayrhofen.

that this is a hotel that places its entire focus
on people and on nature. When cleaning,
the Alpin Juwel doesn’t resort to the usual

dealing with bacteria and viruses. Special flow

food and ayurveda
It is well known that body and soul go hand
in hand, and we come across this kind of
holistic approach throughout the Alpin Juwel
hotel. Alongside the architecture and the
Ayurveda focus in the wellness area, the
food concept of the certified organic hotel
is further evidence of the harmony between
people and nature, with emphasis on the
exclusive use of organic produce from the
surrounding area, total avoidance of artificial
flavours and refined sugar, and ingenious,
simple preparation. The result is soul food of
the highest order and we treat our bodies to
the best that nature has to offer, no matter
whether we spend the whole day on the ex-
tensive network of pistes and carving it up
in the Skicircus snow park – it’s right on the

easy with a winter hike and an hour of yoga

The production of Jedermann was staged in
the famous Cathedral Square in Salzburg
for the first time in 1920. The play about the
death of a rich man was directed by Max
Reinhardt who, along with the play’s author
Hugo von Hofmannsthal, was a co-founder
of the Salzburg Festival. The character of
Jedermann was played by the most famous
actor of the time in the German-speaking
world, Alexander Moissi, while Jedermann’s
lover Buhlschaft was played by Johanna
Terwin, Moissi’s wife in real life. Over the last
PAYING HOMAGE TO THE ARTS
100 years, there have only been a handful
of occasions when Jedermann has not been
performed at the Salzburg Festival. From the
very beginning, the event has included ope-
ratic productions and concerts, and this pro-
gramme has expanded every year since. The
main highlight is definitely still the traditional
rendering of Jedermann, which was based
on several medieval mystery plays. To see it
enacted on the steps in front of the cathedral,
or in the festival hall during bad weather, ne-
ver fails to be an unforgettable experience.

Much older than the Salzburg Festival is a
stone building in a charming little alleyway
called Goldgasse. It is 700 years old and
now home to one of the city’s most stunning
and individual hotels: the Goldgasse,
a boutique hotel with just 16 rooms that
have all been designed around the theme of
the Salzburg Festival. They pay homage to
this enormous production, this event that
turns the entire city into a stage – a notion
that even director Max Reinholdt wished
to express from the outset. The rooms in
the Goldgasse are a stage in themselves for
modern features and contemporary design
objects. And just so you know – this small-but-
perfect retreat doesn’t just provide cultural
inspiration, it also offers exceptional cuisine.

Italian influence in Salzburg began in the 16th century,
when Venetian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi was comissio-
ned with the planning of a new city layout. In cooperation
with his successor Santino Solari, he created the look for
which the city of Mozart today is world-famous. The
connection of Salzburg and Venice is emphasized with
an innovative concept.
Located in one of Salzburg’s top locations, the hotel is
dominated by the colour blue: blue as the lagoon and the
heaven. Thanks to this colour scheme an unique atmosphe-
re and style have been created that convey an incompara-
ble lifestyle experience. In 56 exclusive rooms, that show
exceptional attention to detail, new standards have been
set. These can also be found at the hotel’s rooftop location
on the 7th

Guests from across the globe with an affinity

extensive makeover in 2018 and has since
followed the concept of “Salzburg meets Ve-

manufacturers Barovier & Toso, a company

that is also owned by the hotel proprietor.
Then there are the fabrics by Rubelli, which
certainly wouldn’t look out of place in a
Venetian palace. Even from outside, directly
in front of the hotel, you will be mesmerised
by a work of art by Austrian artist Brigitte

Nordic minimalism in the best spot
dasMAX is a stylish lifestylehotel in the perfect spot in
Seefeld in Tyrol. Located directly at the railway station
and only a few minutes’ walk from the centre, the ski area
and cross-country skiing trails are within easy reach. The
bright rooms radiate Nordic elegance and are furnished
in a reduced way with Bo-Concept design classics. Every
detail and all the materials used are of the highest quality
and the guests notice that quite quickly. The hotel delibe-
rately avoids superfluous „Nice-to haves“ and pompous
chic. Contemporary luxury is welcome – but only where it
makes sense.
Plenty of possibilities without any obligations. That is how
the hosts of dasMAX summarize their philosophy. After an
active day you can relax in the wellness area with Finnish
sauna and spa. Be sure to enjoy the sensational view of the
Seefeld mountains from the rooftop terrace. In the Honesty
Bar you shouldn‘t miss the great selection of cocktails, in
the dasMAX Bistro you can enjoy your breakfast, an exten-

Today’s schedule includes hiking the three
lakes. But before that, breakfast – I don’t
recommend climbing mountains on an
empty stomach. I opt for the Max & Jack,
warm porridge with banana, cinnamon and
maple syrup, plus an espresso and herbal
tea, but I also can’t resist tucking into the
other delights from the breakfast buffet. My
rucksack for the trip is already packed and
after a relaxed breakfast in the hotel bistro –
which, by the way, boasts incredible design
and furnishings from BoConcept – it’s time
to head off. The starting point for this hike is
the championship indoor tennis hall in See-
feld (I make a mental note not to risk a game
of tennis during this holiday), from which the
CITIUS, ALTIUS, FORTIUS
path leads across the Moserer Mahder mea-
dows and slightly uphill towards Mosern.
Embracing the spirit of the Olympic motto
“faster, higher, stronger” (no, it’s not “it’s the
taking part that counts”), there are plenty
of other sporting activities on offer in the
Seefeld Olympic region besides long hikes.
Depending on your level of enthusiasm
and ability, you can choose from mountain
bike tours, stand up paddleboarding on the
Wildsee, climbing, rafting and paragliding, as
well as the less strenuous carriage rides and
walking with alpacas. The benefits of a place
like Seefeld are clear for all to see in the
sheer number of options available.
Walking out of dasMAX, you’ll find your-
self right in the pedestrian zone with its
many restaurants, cafes and bars, so you’ll
be spoilt for choice for dinner and drinks.
Traditional and authentic Italian cuisine
can be enjoyed at the brand new restaurant
“La Trattoria“, which fortunately is only a
short walk away from dasMAX. High-quality
purchases are a given in the many bou-
tiques and shops in Seefeld, and anyone in
the mood for a game of chance can put on
their poker face and spend the evening at
the elegant casino. But let’s get back to my
hike. After circling the Moserersee, the path
follows the Pirschsteig trail in the direction of
the Lottensee and continues until you finally
reach the Wildmoossee and the Wildmoos-
alm. There you can say hello to the cows and
stop for a bite to eat at one of the rustic huts.
After a hike, there’s nothing better than sit-
ting comfortably and squinting into the sun.

Chilling on the rooftop
So back at dasMAX, the quickest way to get
to the rooftop wellness area is via the lift
– then you can rest your weary legs in the
sauna. In the spa, I chill out on a lounger
and while away the time. The rooftop affords
visitors a unique 360-degree view of the
dasMAX mountain landscape that surrounds
Seefeld, and there’s no doubt that it’ll take
your breath away. The Nordic-style rooms
are extremely appealing and feature little
added conveniences like a day bed, a kettle
and an espresso machine as standard. With
contemporary individuality and good deals,
dasMAX demonstrates that it’s possible to
enjoy a smart and urban holiday even in the
mountains.
