1. All-Campus Leadership Conference Speaker Abstracts
Keynote Speaker: Kevin Smith
Success Beyond the Major (Keynote Address)
It’s time we change the conversation. Why do most students feel lost when college is supposed to be
about discovering purpose while preparing to make a difference in the world? Students are facing
constant pressure to set aside their dreams and ambitions in order to play a function in our
economy. This is not inspiring. We can change that.
The truth is, every student, regardless of their major, is developing the skills and abilities to
passionately live their dreams and become a success in life! In his keynote, Success Beyond the
Major, speaker Kevin Smith shares personal stories of setbacks and successes to inspire students to
pursue their dreams, define their unique value, become more than a major, and build the
confidence to be in charge of their own destiny.
Kevin will challenge students to use their personal leadership skills, define their unique value
proposition, create a story worth telling and encourage students to believe in themselves, take
action and make meaning for themselves and those they lead.
Create Your Brand. Create Your Future (Breakout #1)
Do you have a brand and is it worth following? A brand is an identity created to be placed
intentionally in another person’s memory. Brands are strong ideas and they work because they
create identity and motivate actions of integrity. The same principles that go into making a brand
unique and meaningful are the same we can use to create our own leadership identities.
Students will take an interactive and engaging look at what goes into a brand using some of the
most recognizable, relevant, and sometimes hilarious examples possible. Moreover, students will
learn how these same strategies can be applied to their own personal and professional “brand;”
they will learn how to expertly “frame” and communicate what might seem like even the most
marginal of life experiences into something valuable and worth following. Drawing from students’
personal experiences, values, and desire for options, students will be challenged to become more
than just resume builders, but to become entrepreneurs of their own identities and leaders worth
following!
The Confidence to Decide (Breakout #2)
Are you ready to make difficult choices? How ready are you? As a leader, you will make choices that
will deeply impact others. You’ll have to decide not only between right from wrong, but also right
from right. In times like these, the confidence to make a critical decision can make all the difference.
How ready are you for that big moment?
In this seminar, students will be called to action in becoming “ethically fit” and able to handle the
most difficult decisions. Through real-life examples and definable concepts, students will emerge
from this leadership keynote charged with an increased confidence. Your student leaders will be
better able to understand the ethical decision-making process and be able to put it to work on
campus and in their lives after college.

role in developing and leading at outreach events. The session will be a balance between having
participants move through an example hands-on activity and then connecting back to the up-front
and behind the scenes leadership attributes that make the station successful. We will be
investigating different roles of leadership including connecting to diverse audiences, learning in
out-of-school environments, and decision making in the planning phase as well as decision making
in the moment.
Adventure Leadership Programs (ALPS):
Tips and Tricks to Running a Meeting and Managing a Group (Both Sessions): The ability to
run an effective meeting and manage a group is an essential skill for any leader. ALPs facilitators
manage groups ranging in size from 10 to 200 at their teambuilding workshops. We have a wealth
of experience making people feel comfortable, breaking up cliques, and helping groups stay focused.
We will cover these topics, and more, at our breakout session. Participants will also work together
to troubleshoot difficulties they’ve faced in groups and meetings.
Robert Toomey (Division of Continuing Studies, Coordinated Leadership Initiatives):
Servant Leadership-Struggles and Successes (Both Sessions): The philosophy and practice of
servant leadership is a particular leadership approach that begins with the desire to serve. Former
AT&T executive Robert Greenleaf is universally credited with coining the term. While servant
leadership is not new, nor is the phrase universally known and understood, it continues to be of
great interest to people in a wide variety of organizations. Servant leadership is about servant-
leaders who choose first to serve, then lead. It is about the leadership journey, and is not without
challenges. The servant leadership approach, while not easy, offers both individuals and
organizations the very real potential for growth and success.
3. Multi-Cultrual Student Center (MSC):
Leadership and Identity-How Does WHO You are Shape HOW You Lead? (First Session): In
this session led by the Multicultural Student Center, students will participate in a facilitated activity
that prompts them to reflect on the many dimensions of their identity and how their identity
influences their leadership style. Students will also brainstorm ways to create and promote
inclusive, diverse environments in their campus groups that honor the varied contexts and cultures
of their members.
GlobalLead:
What Do You Value, Really? (Both Sessions): Companies, organizations and institutions identify
their values and purpose. Do you know what your core values are? What is your personal mission
statement? During this interactive workshop, you will get to determine what your core values are
through a live auction. Through examples from current events and culture like “The Hunger
Games,” “How I Met Your Mother,” politicians and personalities, we will explain what values are,
why they matter and how to identify yours. We will also guide you on how to craft a mission
statement based for your life based on these core values. Taking this time to think about who you
are, what you value and where you are going will help you make the most of your time at UW-
Madison and prepare for the next step after college!
UW Leadership Certificate:
UW Leadership Certificate Presentation (First Session): The University of Wisconsin-Madison
Leadership Certificate is administered through the Center for Leadership and Involvement. The
presentation will focus on providing information to students about the newly revised leadership
certificate application and review process that will launch spring/early summer of 2015. The
“new” Certificate will reflect the competencies, values and outcomes of UW-Madison’s Leadership
Framework. Through an interactive facilitated discussion students will learn about the Certificate
requirements while reflecting on their own person leadership experiences.
Emerging Leaders Program:
True Colors (Both Sessions): True Colors is a workshop based off the Social Change Model of
Leadership that focuses on individual leadership skills. Participants will take the “True Colors” quiz
to identify their true color of leadership, and then go through a series of interactive and fun
activities to find out what having a true color really means. Attendees will also learn about the true
colors of others, and use this knowledge to best understand and the needs and work with others.
This workshop is always a conference favorite and a great choice for anyone interested in learning
more about their own leadership style!
Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA):
Effective Delegation of Power Throughout an Organization (First Session): For our workshop,
the directors of HOSA-UW hope to educate other students on our process of choosing an executive
board via application and interview, the separation of power between members, and how to
delegate work load in order to achieve organization goals.
4. Allison Perlin (Model United Nations):
Negotiation-Understanding and Doing (Second Session): Decision making anywhere is difficult,
but when it comes to decision making as a group or within an organization sometimes it seems
nearly impossible. It is essential at those moments to focus on negotiation, knowing what your
organization needs, what it is willing to give up, and coordinating with stakeholders to move come
out with a productive solution. This session will also uniquely stress the necessity of inclusion in
negotiation. Drawing from Model United Nations techniques and real observed strategies in
international negotiations, the first half of the session will focus on negotiating theories and
techniques. The second half will allow participants to actually put that theory into action by
practicing negotiation.
Blake Bishop (Center for Patient Partnerships, Coordinated Leadership Initiative):
Developing the Leadership Capacity of Students and Staff (First Session): This interactive
session will provide an opportunity to informally assess your leadership strengths and consider
opportunities to build leadership capacity. The workshop will be informed by a framework
developed at the UW-Madison by the Coordinated Leadership Initiative (CLI). The CLI connects
leadership opportunities, articulates a shared vision and common language for leadership, and
promotes best practices that cultivate positive change. Participants will hear stories about how the
framework has been implemented to support leadership development of individuals and
organizations throughout campus.
Willis Jones Leadership Center:
Your Life Story (Both Sessions): “Your Life Story” focuses on a visual depiction of experiences,
people, and events that have shaped you into the person and leader that you are today. By
visualizing our leadership abilities we can understand when we are called to action, where our
passions lie, and where we are driven to lead. Once we reflect on these experiences, leadership
becomes more sustainable and purposeful, and a clearer vision for the future is formed. Through
the lens of “Your Life Story,” you can begin to see your purpose, values, and motivations as a leader.
Wisconsin Experience Bus Trip:
The Wisconsin Experience Bus Trip: Engaging Students with the Leadership Framework
Across the State (Second Session): The Wisconsin Experience Bus Trip places new undergraduate
leaders at the center of a web of linkages (interpersonal, conceptual, and historic-contemporary-
future) that advance the connections they have to each other and their community. During this
session we’ll share how this occurred by comingling 1 bus, 3 staff, 5 days, 10 cities and 29 student
leaders. We’ll deconstruct this experience with a focus on transferable lessons you can use
including: how the leadership framework was used as a reflection tool, pre/post experience
assessment results and how you can to get on the bus this year.
Zach Roberts and Greg Iaccarino (L&S Career Services):
7 Habits College Workshop (First Session): This interactive workshop is adapted from Stephen
Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in order to illustrate its application to the college
lifestyle. For many college students, they are in the best location in their lives to apply Covey’s 7
Habits to the classroom, extracurricular activities, and careers. The focus of this workshop will be to
5. demonstrate how the first habit of proactivity can heighten our self-awareness to be more
principle-based leaders. The vision for this event is to show the benefits gained from this one habit
and how participants can further maximize their leadership through internalizing the 7 Habits of
Highly Effective People in its entirety.
UW Panhellenic Association:
Greek Leadership and Involvement (Second Session): This workshop will be used to educate
Greek leaders, while also creating a sense of camaraderie between chapters on campus. We will be
working through ways to develop better leadership, teamwork and organizational skills. In
