The study of nonprofit, third sector, or voluntary organizations is a fairly recent development in the history of the social sciences. What has become one of the most dynamic and interdisciplinary fields of the social sciences today began to gather momentum more than three decades ago. At the same time, the field is rooted in long-standing intellectual and disciplinary approaches that seek to come to terms with the complexity and vast variety of nonprofit organizations and related forms and phenomena. After considering this chapter, the reader should:
■ have an understanding of the wide range of institutions, organizations, and types of activities that come under the label of the nonprofit sector;
■ be able to identify key intellectual traditions of nonprofit sector research;
■ have a sense of the major factors that influenced the field and that contributed to its development; and
■ be able to navigate through the book’s various parts and chapters in terms of specific content and their thematic connections. Some of the key concepts introduced in this chapter are:
THE EMERGENCE OF THE NONPROFIT SECTOR IN THE US While the concept of civil society as such is not common currency in the US, there is nonetheless a deep-seated cultural understanding that civil society finds its clearest expression in this country. Indeed a strong political as well as cultural current running through American history and contemporary society sees the US as an ongoing “experiment” in civility, community, democracy, and self-governance. Not only the country as a whole, but cities, such as New York, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles in particular, regard themselves as the “social laboratories” of modern urban life: they are among the most diverse in the world in ethnic, religious, and social terms, with large portions of immigrant populations, small local government, and high levels of community organizing and individualism. A strong expression of this cultural self-understanding is that the US, in all its imperfections and injustices, is nonetheless regarded as the embodiment of human political progress. This ideological current assumes at times mythical dimensions, perhaps because it is so closely linked to, and rests on, major symbols of US political history. In countless political speeches as well as in popular culture frequent references are made to highly symbolic events and documents that provide deep roots of legitimacy to both nonprofit organizations and the notion of self-organization. Among the most prominent of such cultural-political icons:
Charity, i.e. individual benevolence and caring, is a value and practice found in all major world cultures and religions. It is one of the “fi ve pillars” of Islam, and central to Christian and Jewish religious teaching and practice as well. In many countries, including the US, the notion of charity includes relief of poverty, helping the sick, disabled, and elderly, supporting.

Over the last ten years, hip-hop has become a reference for thousands of youth to identify, speak
for, and organize themselves. In the case of Guatemala and of Latin American countries, hip-hop
finds its base in the so-called marginal areas of the city, made up of precarious settlements,
sometimes normalized, but generally materially and symbolically differentiated from the
dominant culture.
In order to understand this phenomenon, it is necessary to analyze it from different points of
view. The objective of the essay is to address hip-hop in Guatemala City as an object of study
from the perspective of Cultural Studies. I start from a concept of urban, youth and popular
cultures in order to understand hip-hop as a contemporaneous phenomenon of cities around the
world and end with a proposal on how to make a multidisciplinary analysis of cultural creations
of those who identify or can be identified within this group.
Approaching the topic
I begin by considering hip-hop as a subculture. Subculture is understood as a: “cultural minority
that occupies a subaltern position in relation to the dominant culture or to a parental culture.
Youth cultures are subcultures in both senses.” (Feixa, 1999: 271).
From this perspective, hip-hop is a subculture. However, it is not my objective to see hip-hop as
a sub-product of life in the city, and to relegate it to secondary happening, based on a central
dominant culture. Although I understand that the development of hip-hop takes place thanks to
the condition of subalternity, when I refer to hip-hop, I do so as a culture1.

To approach the study of hip-hop, I propose to use four perspectives: as urban culture, as youth
culture, as popular culture, and from the relationship of hip-hop with industrial culture. I will
finish by detailing my proposals as related to hip-hop in Guatemala.

Since their emergence, cities have been organized around the social differences of the groups
that make them up. The fully urbanized part of the city is occupied by middle and upper classes.
While the middle and upper layers are located in the areas of greater urbanization, the less

Understanding: Race
RACE: is social constructed category that divides people into groups based on visible physical characteristics such as skin color, eye shape, hair texture, etc.
Although race is related to the physical body, the meaning we give these superficial differences between us are entirely socially constructed. There are NO actual genetic differences between the various races.
Because race categories are socially constructed, they change over time. Which categories we measure, and how we measure them, shifts.

Understanding: Ethnicity
Ethnicity: is a socially constructed category, a way of grouping people based on their shared culture, such as religion, language, and history.
The difference between “race” and “ethnicity” can be confusing. For example, “Asian American” is treated as a race, but “Chinese American” and “Japanese American” are treated as ethnicities because they have distinct languages and traditions.
In the United States, there is a great deal of pressure on ethnic minority groups to assimilate the norms, values, and characteristics of the majority ethnic group.

Different racial groups are just that– different. Even thought we often speak in terms of binaries (“minorities” verses “the majority”), it is important to realize that not all minority race and/or ethnic groups share the same characteristics, both between themselves and within themselves.

A commonality among those which are considered minority groups is the experience of inequality.

Racism can occur at both the individual and institutional level.

Various alternative work arrangements exist for use in businesses and other types of organizations; included among the options are compressed work weeks, flexible work schedules, telecommuting, and job sharing. This case focuses on alternative work arrangements in general rather than on a particular one exclusively; however, telecommuting does receive additional attention.
The case revolves around the potential advantages and disadvantages that are associated with alternative work arrangements, and the factors that are contributing to an increased use of various alternative work arrangements by employers. With respect to the various advantages and disadvantage that are identified in the case, the positives seem to outweigh the negatives. “Organizations that offer flexible working arrangements are, and will continue to be, employers of choice. ¼ Employees consistently rank flexible schedules high on their list of desired benefits; employers who are reluctant to offer these popular perks will find themselves falling short in the bidding wars for talent.” The case identifies three underlying factors that are driving the movement toward the increased utilization of alternative work arrangements in many different workplaces. These factors are: (a) the needs, desires, and expectations of workers for greater flexibility at work; (b) fuel costs and fuel consumption associated with commuting, and the related carbon footprint impact; and (c) the restrictive impact of the 2008-2009 economic recession on job opportunities.
The case concludes by pointing out that many nations have experimented successfully with various flexible work programs and some countries have enacted legislation promoting alternative work arrangements. It then poses the question: “Will the United States government and American businesses be adequately prepared to meet future economic challenges, at least in part, by embracing the movement toward increasing use of alternative work arrangements?”

THE EMERGENCE OF THE NONPROFIT SECTOR IN THE US While the concept of civil society as such is not common currency in the US, there is nonetheless a deep-seated cultural understanding that civil society finds its clearest expression in this country. Indeed a strong political as well as cultural current running through American history and contemporary society sees the US as an ongoing “experiment” in civility, community, democracy, and self-governance. Not only the country as a whole, but cities, such as New York, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles in particular, regard themselves as the “social laboratories” of modern urban life: they are among the most diverse in the world in ethnic, religious, and social terms, with large portions of immigrant populations, small local government, and high levels of community organizing and individualism. A strong expression of this cultural self-understanding is that the US, in all its imperfections and injustices, is nonetheless regarded as the embodiment of human political progress. This ideological current assumes at times mythical dimensions, perhaps because it is so closely linked to, and rests on, major symbols of US political history. In countless political speeches as well as in popular culture frequent references are made to highly symbolic events and documents that provide deep roots of legitimacy to both nonprofit organizations and the notion of self-organization. Among the most prominent of such cultural-political icons:

Over the last ten years, hip-hop has become a reference for thousands of youth to identify, speak
for, and organize themselves. In the case of Guatemala and of Latin American countries, hip-hop
finds its base in the so-called marginal areas of the city, made up of precarious settlements,
sometimes normalized, but generally materially and symbolically differentiated from the
dominant culture.
In order to understand this phenomenon, it is necessary to analyze it from different points of
view. The objective of the essay is to address hip-hop in Guatemala City as an object of study
from the perspective of Cultural Studies. I start from a concept of urban, youth and popular
cultures in order to understand hip-hop as a contemporaneous phenomenon of cities around the
world and end with a proposal on how to make a multidisciplinary analysis of cultural creations
of those who identify or can be identified within this group.
Approaching the topic
I begin by considering hip-hop as a subculture. Subculture is understood as a: “cultural minority
that occupies a subaltern position in relation to the dominant culture or to a parental culture.
Youth cultures are subcultures in both senses.” (Feixa, 1999: 271).
From this perspective, hip-hop is a subculture. However, it is not my objective to see hip-hop as
a sub-product of life in the city, and to relegate it to secondary happening, based on a central
dominant culture. Although I understand that the development of hip-hop takes place thanks to
the condition of subalternity, when I refer to hip-hop, I do so as a culture1.

To approach the study of hip-hop, I propose to use four perspectives: as urban culture, as youth
culture, as popular culture, and from the relationship of hip-hop with industrial culture. I will
finish by detailing my proposals as related to hip-hop in Guatemala.

that make them up. The fully urbanized part of the city is occupied by middle and upper classes.
While the middle and upper layers are located in the areas of greater urbanization, the less

Understanding: Race
RACE: is social constructed category that divides people into groups based on visible physical characteristics such as skin color, eye shape, hair texture, etc.
Although race is related to the physical body, the meaning we give these superficial differences between us are entirely socially constructed. There are NO actual genetic differences between the various races.
Because race categories are socially constructed, they change over time. Which categories we measure, and how we measure them, shifts.

Understanding: Ethnicity
Ethnicity: is a socially constructed category, a way of grouping people based on their shared culture, such as religion, language, and history.
The difference between “race” and “ethnicity” can be confusing. For example, “Asian American” is treated as a race, but “Chinese American” and “Japanese American” are treated as ethnicities because they have distinct languages and traditions.
In the United States, there is a great deal of pressure on ethnic minority groups to assimilate the norms, values, and characteristics of the majority ethnic group.

Different racial groups are just that– different. Even thought we often speak in terms of binaries (“minorities” verses “the majority”), it is important to realize that not all minority race and/or ethnic groups share the same characteristics, both between themselves and within themselves.

- 1. all work must be original as it goes through a turnitin program Stereotypes Set by Culture and Society Sociology came into existence in the 19th century to explain the enormous changes occasioned by the Industrial Revolution, urbanization, and an individualistic mind-set. Unlike agrarian communities, the emerging urban populations were large, numbering in the tens of thousands. These city dwellers neither grew their own food nor knew each other. In characterizing individuals, they found it convenient to speak in categories or stereotypes. According to the structural- functional perspective, stereotypes served an important communication function, helping them to compare and contrast groups. The social-conflict perspective, on the other hand, argues that stereotypes serve the needs of those groups and categories benefitting from social inequality. Stereotypes help dominant groups to contrast social categories and to justify subordinating the less powerful. Furthermore, by lumping subordinate groups into faceless statistical categories, members of the dominant group dissipate the guilt they would have felt were they dealing with the subordinate categories as individuals. Based on your readings, the online lectures, and your understanding of the above-noted issues, prepare a response to the following question: Is it possible to speak of ethnic groups in America in terms other than stereotypes?
