This week was the first time since I met with my mentor Cyndy about
the internship. I met with her Friday June 10th
for about an hour and we
discussed the next two months of when I would come in as well as what
things I would be experiencing during that time. I first got a more
detailed tour of the facility and where everything was as well as what
things I will be doing and preparing each week. She told me about how
they make lemonade and tea for their clients as well as baked goods but
from scratch that are served daily. We then talked about the schedule
and I told her though I am still currently working I would like to come
in as often as possible and she really made it nice so that I can balance
both work and my internship without burning myself out too quickly.
She then told me that their kids camp starts tomorrow and that is
something that I am really looking forward too because I love children
and helping them through this time of need is going to be great. She
finally told me about what all activities and extra events I will be
participating in and that she wants me to fully experience every part of
their program while I am there. That made me really excited so I can
really be involved every step of the way. I am truly excited that I was
able to have the opportunity to do my internship here because it is
something that I am passionate about and I believe that it will really
help shape me for when I start my next career in just a few months.
Tomorrow is my first real day and I could not be more thrilled!

This week was a crazy week learning to balance my internship and my
job. Though this week was crazy, I was glad it allowed me to start off
my internship with the Noogieland Camp. This camp was for children,
or grandchildren or even children themselves who have been affected
by cancer at some point in their life. The whole week I was under the
assumption that all the children just had relatives that had cancer and
this is why they were here. On the last day, a brother and sister showed
up to the camp. I thought it was strange that they would miss every day
but the last but I soon realized that they were out of town for most of the
week and could only make the last two days. Still to me, in my head, I
am thinking why wouldn’t they have come on Thursday? Well after our
Noogieland Camp Awards, the mom of the new brother and sister
stayed and waited til the grandfather made it to the hospital to pick up
the kids. The mom works next door and her dad was going to watch
them. So knowing that she worked next door, I assumed once again
that’s why the kids were there. Little did I know, the mom told us that
the daughter was the one who had the cancer when she was younger and
since then she always wanted to stay away from anything cancer unless
she had too. This was the first time she had been back to come kind of
camp related to cancer and she told her mom she had a great time. It
really warmed my heart knowing how strong she was and showed me
that I shouldn’t assume why the child is here but to be happy that they
are here.

stands for a Customized Membership Plan. This is for a
new member coming in and just getting to know them and
what they would want to be a part of the CSC.

This week was a slow but nice week. This was the first week that we
did not have the Noogieland Camp so the usual groups and activities
were happening. This really gave me a chance to show my face to the
members and introduce myself to them. As well as letting me get to
know them and a little bit of who they were and what they were
interested in. The first day was scrapbooking and I sat in with the ladies
who came just to talk and see how things were going. One sweet lady
decided that I needed to do a project and she came and offered me all of
these materials to make a mini scrapbook and of course I couldn’t say
no! They were here for a few hours but it made the time fly by because
it was great to visit with them and get to know them. After lunch, I was
given a list of all our members and I started making phone calls to invite
them to our Neuropathy Presentation that was occurring Wednesday
night. I talked to several people but mainly just left a lot of voicemails.
Wednesday we had the Weight Watchers group come in. They just use
our facility to meet weekly but it is open to all of our members as well.
It was nice to see a few more familiar faces. After Weight Watchers, I
helped set up for the presentation later on that night. As well as making
phone calls to remind the people who were coming that the presentation
was happening and to see if they were still coming. Friday was slow but
nice. The sewing group came and after that I was able to read some
more and just have a nice relaxing day to end the week.
Making the Most of Your Internship Experience
After reading this article, I felt more at ease with how my internship
was going to look like and what is expected of me. Never having a
consistent 9 to 5 job because of school I did not know what to expect
but now getting the hang of it and reading this article makes me feel that
I know what I am doing and what I should be doing. It helps me not be
as stressed about my internship because now I know how I should
utilize every part of my internship because that is what it is here for. As
well as gaining more experience for my next step in my career.

Activities: Today the weight watchers group came in and I sat in on that. I listened and
talked about how their journeys were going. I then read more of the manual. I was then
able to sit in on the wellness group and listen to how their weeks have been going.

Activities: Today was a VERY SLOW day in the club house. I read a lot of the manual and
the sewing group that usually comes in did not show because it is summer and the
holiday weekend, everyone was out of town. So I did a LOT of reading.
Journal
This week was slow week which resulted in not much happening. The end of the month,
every group has already met and not too much is happening. On Tuesday, I was about
to set up and get ready for the practicum fair in the evening. Once I was able to set
everything up just like I was going to at the practicum fair, I practiced all the things I was
going to say to people when they walked up and asked about Cancer Support
Community. Once I got everything cleaned up I was able to go sit in on a Wellness
group that meets twice a month for 2 hours. In this group, I was able to see how my
mentor handles group situations that are supposed to be focused on cancer and the
person(s) treatment and life rather than all the other things going on in their lives. My
mentor told me that people like to treat this a therapy session and think that they can
talk about anything and everything but that is not the case. There were several times
when things would get side tracked and my mentor would be quick to try and switch the
conversation back to what we were supposed to be talking about. She also does this
when I am asking questions and think I know the answer but she is quick to tell me what
something really means or the purpose. She also does this if I assume something and
she lets me know right away about what the truth is. i really enjoy this because she tells
me as it is and doesn’t let me sit there and think something that is wrong. So far this
type of leadership has worked great for my learning. Especially when I am reading the
handbook manual and she always asks me to think of questions that I would like to ask.
This way I am not only learning from what I see and witness but also by what I am
reading.

This week and last week really showed me how much goes into networking, and it’s a LOT!!!!!
I was able to speak with a woman who is in charge of things like fundraising and how the
Cancer Support Community really gets its money to help keep all its doors open every year.
Though on Wednesday of this week, really showed me how much effort goes in to fundraising
for a Parent’s Night Out event that we are going to hold in August. This night is a night for our
members who are parents with children. We invite them to bring their children to the clubhouse
and when they arrive we will give the parents a gift card to a local restaurant. This allowing
them to go out and eat dinner, just the two of them, while their children stay at the clubhouse
and we will provide pizza and a movie for the night. With cancer, money is tight so eating out is
a luxury that most families, or even parents, don’t get to experience as often as they might have
used too. So allowing the parents a night out, just the two of them, allows them to get that
special time that they may not have had in many weeks, months, or even years. This also allows
the children to meet other kids and get to know them. This helps too because they can become
friends since they are all going through something very similar that other kids from school or
who they are friends with, aren’t going through. So on Wednesday, Abby and I went out to
Alliance Town Center to local restaurants asking them if they would be willing to donate for our
night. There were a lot of hit and misses but in the end we receive quite a lot of donations for
the event. By doing this fundraising and networking, it really brought out my personality and
showed me how quick I needed to be on my toes for when people ask questions about our
organization. Starting out with offering them a pamphlet with more information and our phone
number helped a lot but when talking about a certain event, you have to be ready to answer any
question thrown at you or direct them to call the number if they have more questions. After
watching Abby do several restaurants, I felt comfortable enough for asking for the donations
and new that it was ok if they said no. They are offering this out of the goodness of their heart
and they won’t be making too much money off of it or even none at all so it is ok if they say no.
I think this experience and continuing to do it on Friday, has really showed me, first hand, how
you have to put it in a lot of effort in a non-profit. Being limited on funds every year, in able to
do the things you want, you have to fundraise and ask for donations. But being turned down
several times has also showed me that it is no walk in the park and people will say no even
though you are a non-profit.

Taylor Kring Course and Section - DFST 4023 Month - June 2016 Date: 6/28/2016 Hours: 7 Hours Cumulative Hours: 53.5 Hours Activities: Today the weight watchers group came in and I sat in on that. I listened and talked about how their journeys were going. I then read more of the manual. I was then able to sit in on the wellness group and listen to how their weeks have been going. Date: 6/29/2016 Hours: 7.5 Hours Cumulative Hours: 61 Hours Activities: Today was a VERY SLOW day in the club house. I read a lot of the manual and the sewing group that usually comes in did not show because it is summer and the holiday weekend, everyone was out of town. So I did a LOT of reading. Journal This week was slow week which resulted in not much happening. The end of the month, every group has already met and not too much is happening. On Tuesday, I was about to set up and get ready for the practicum fair in the evening. Once I was able to set everything up just like I was going to at the practicum fair, I practiced all the things I was going to say to people when they walked up and asked about Cancer Support Community. Once I got everything cleaned up I was able to go sit in on a Wellness group that meets twice a month for 2 hours. In this group, I was able to see how my mentor handles group situations that are supposed to be focused on cancer and the person(s) treatment and life rather than all the other things going on in their lives. My mentor told me that people like to treat this a therapy session and think that they can talk about anything and everything but that is not the case. There were several times when things would get side tracked and my mentor would be quick to try and switch the conversation back to what we were supposed to be talking about. She also does this when I am asking questions and think I know the answer but she is quick to tell me what something really means or the purpose. She also does this if I assume something and she lets me know right away about what the truth is. i really enjoy this because she tells me as it is and doesn’t let me sit there and think something that is wrong. So far this type of leadership has worked great for my learning. Especially when I am reading the handbook manual and she always asks me to think of questions that I would like to ask. This way I am not only learning from what I see and witness but also by what I am reading. • 10. This week and last week really showed me how much goes into networking, and it’s a LOT!!!!! I was able to speak with a woman who is in charge of things like fundraising and how the Cancer Support Community really gets its money to help keep all its doors open every year. Though on Wednesday of this week, really showed me how much effort goes in to fundraising for a Parent’s Night Out event that we are going to hold in August. This night is a night for our members who are parents with children. We invite them to bring their children to the clubhouse and when they arrive we will give the parents a gift card to a local restaurant. This allowing them to go out and eat dinner, just the two of them, while their children stay at the clubhouse and we will provide pizza and a movie for the night. With cancer, money is tight so eating out is a luxury that most families, or even parents, don’t get to experience as often as they might have used too. So allowing the parents a night out, just the two of them, allows them to get that special time that they may not have had in many weeks, months, or even years. This also allows the children to meet other kids and get to know them. This helps too because they can become friends since they are all going through something very similar that other kids from school or who they are friends with, aren’t going through. So on Wednesday, Abby and I went out to Alliance Town Center to local restaurants asking them if they would be willing to donate for our night. There were a lot of hit and misses but in the end we receive quite a lot of donations for the event. By doing this fundraising and networking, it really brought out my personality and showed me how quick I needed to be on my toes for when people ask questions about our organization. Starting out with offering them a pamphlet with more information and our phone number helped a lot but when talking about a certain event, you have to be ready to answer any question thrown at you or direct them to call the number if they have more questions. After watching Abby do several restaurants, I felt comfortable enough for asking for the donations and new that it was ok if they said no. They are offering this out of the goodness of their heart and they won’t be making too much money off of it or even none at all so it is ok if they say no. I think this experience and continuing to do it on Friday, has really showed me, first hand, how you have to put it in a lot of effort in a non-profit. Being limited on funds every year, in able to do the things you want, you have to fundraise and ask for donations. But being turned down several times has also showed me that it is no walk in the park and people will say no even though you are a non-profit.
