All audience feedback on the revolution of technology documentary film
1. Audience Feedback The Revolution of Technology No.1
Recognised faults which still need to be clarified and updated:
• Bringing our presenter up to the rule of 3rds
• Relational time laps video to bridge into interview
• Titles for presenter and interviewee’s
• Voice over for final time laps
Over the past 50years we have seen how various technologies have developed and
prospered to become incredibly revolutionary. During this documentary the viewer will learn
and be informed on a wide array of matters such as how technology has changed the way
we live our lives? And which piece has evolved the most within 50 years. This is the FIRST
CUT of our starting 5 minute extract which can be viewed on the Vimeo account link here:
http://vimeo.com/86728401
Whilst watching this video please take note of anything which you feel may be out of
place/needs edit/missing or re-constructing. Please take the time to pause and note down
any queries you may have and answers to the questions listed below. (Any constructive
criticism will be taken into account and used in progress). Thank you for your time.
• Can you identify the primary target audience? Secondary audience and genre?
I would say that the target audience is very broad in the fact that it would appeal to those who use
some form of technology in their day to day lives, which in the modern world is the majority of
people (15 – 50). The presenter’s statement on the new generation also suggests that it looks ahead
to younger generations to appeal to what the future holds for technology. I would also say that the
secondary audience would consist of an older generation to maybe see how technology has evolved
from when their core use of it would have been when they were younger. The genre and overall
theme is technology.
• Does this type of documentary feel suited for a Channel 4 programme?
The presenter led approach and various cutaways and speed ramps allow it to fit
into that field of an evening Channel 4 documentary. The choice of music is very
upbeat also and would fit well with a Channel 4 Documentary.
2. • Is there a clear narrative to follow in this extract?
Yes, the narrative follows how technology has evolved and investigates what people have and use
from their devices.
• Do you gain a strong sense of the technology revolution?
Yes as the documentary revolves around the revolution and advancements of
technology.
• Do you understand the purpose of this text (Uses and Gratifications theory)?
I believe the purpose of the text is to educate its audience on how technology has evolved over the
years and what this mean for future generations and our advantages on its improvements.
• How does the technology revolution relate to you in your everyday lives?
It relates to me as I use the devices mentioned in the documentary so it is interesting to see how its
predecessors involved into what they are today (e.g. cameras, mobiles and computers).
• Which segments of the extract were effective in your learning?
The addition of more than one source of expert on technology allowed the audience to gain multiple
insights to how technology has evolved over the years.
• How effective is the use of sound in this extract?
It is difficult to remove background noise depending on the location chosen to shoot however
considering the interviews in the busy streets of London, I was still able to clearly hear all
interviewees and presenter at all times.
• Are there any areas which are non relational?
No I felt that the five minutes was very focused on the topic of technology.
• Did you find this documentary influential and particularly useful?
3. I felt the documentary was useful in discussing the revolution of technology and what people use
and depend on today.
• Any areas which were found to be faulty/ out of place/needs edit/missing or need
re-constructing please state below:
The majority of the documentary is very good, if I were to suggest any improvements I
would say choice of font and alignment on titles and adjustment of sound when it
sometimes cuts off abruptly when moving onto the next section however overall it is a very
good documentary.

• Can you identify the primary target audience? Secondary audience and genre?
4. I think the audience would be people around 15-25 with not much experience of technology (as it
doesn’t go into too much detail and is accessible without understanding much about tech). It is
educational and seems to be teaching viewers about how technology has changed, rather than
assuming they have been alive while the technology is changing.
• Does this type of documentary feel suited for a Channel 4 programme?
Yes, it’s exactly the sort of show they would make.
• Is there a clear narrative to follow in this extract?
Sort of. I liked how you went from talking to the professor to then talking to the public. The first
minute and a half was really focused and worked well, especially 0:55s to 1:30. Some really cool
filming and it made sure I knew what was about to happen. You spoke about how technology has
changed, but not about how it “affects us in our day to day lives” so I think you should do more on
that.
• Do you gain a strong sense of the technology revolution?
Yeah, the video shows well how impressive some technological advances have been, but I think
there should be more on how technology affects our everyday lives e.g. more communication,
cloud computing, GPS
• Do you understand the purpose of this text (Uses and Gratifications theory)?
• How does the technology revolution relate to you in your everyday lives?
This is a hard question because I haven’t really been alive long enough to experience any massive
changes. I guess the biggest one for me is how phones are now mini computers which can do
virtually anything. I find myself looking something up on my phone when I am sitting by a
computer, which shows how accessible they now are. Also the miniaturisation of technology
which was spoken about has made tech portable.
5. • Which segments of the extract were effective in your learning?
The parts when Dave Cohen and Mr Thomas were speaking were good as they really knew their
subject and have clearly experienced the revolution first hand. I think those were the most
educational bits.
• How effective is the use of sound in this extract?
Very effective, it’s quite low key which is nice and doesn’t drown anything out. Perfect music.
• Are there any areas which are non relational?
The bit in London was good but was more about which technology people like the most, rather
than which one has the biggest impact on their lives.
• Did you find this documentary influential and particularly useful?
Yes, I would like to see more of it.
• Any areas which were found to be faulty/ out of place/needs edit/missing or need
re-constructing please state below:
At the end it should be ‘The Revolution of Technology’ not ‘The revolution of technology’

• Can you identify the primary target audience? Secondary audience and genre?
Primary target audience: teenage to early 20’s
Secondary target audience: mid 20’s
Genre: Documentary
• Does this type of documentary feel suited for a Channel 4 programme?
Yes, it would suit a younger channel 4 audience
• Is there a clear narrative to follow in this extract?
Yes there is a clear narrative to follow in this extract.
• Do you gain a strong sense of the technology revolution?
Yes, both segments with the experts give good focus on how technology has
changed in a relatively short period. Especially in storage and digital revolutions.
• Do you understand the purpose of this text (Uses and Gratifications theory)?
7. • How does the technology revolution relate to you in your everyday lives?
Computers have become integral in virtually everything we do. From shopping to
exercise and especially communication.
• Which segments of the extract were effective in your learning?
The segments with the experts
• How effective is the use of sound in this extract?
The sound was good, especially the first time laps. However there was a lack of
sound for 30 seconds at around 3 minutes 30 seconds.
• Are there any areas which are non relational?
Yes, the time laps with no sound or text
• Did you find this documentary influential and particularly useful?
Yes, however you could focus on how you think technology will change in the future.
You focused on past and present only.
• Any areas which were found to be faulty/ out of place/needs edit/missing or need
re-constructing please state below:
3:30 minutes in the is 20 seconds of time laps which has no sound and seems
irrelevant
The documentary would also benefit from a summary at the end as it abruptly
ended. An ending summary similar to the intro would be good.

Primary – Teenagers
Genre – Informational documentary
9. • Does this type of documentary feel suited for a Channel 4 programme?
Yeah, similar to gadget man
• Is there a clear narrative to follow in this extract?
Yes, shows us how much technology has advanced
• Do you gain a strong sense of the technology revolution?
I gained the sense of how much we’ve progressed in terms of technology, but I don’t
think you went into enough depth in how it has changed our lives as humans
• Do you understand the purpose of this text (Uses and Gratifications theory)?
To inform the audience about technological advances
• How does the technology revolution relate to you in your everyday lives?
I’m part of the generation growing up with smart phones ect, so any technological advances are
going to directly affect me
• Which segments of the extract were effective in your learning?
The interviews in conveying how phones and cameras have become an all in 1
device
• How effective is the use of sound in this extract?
Good, made the panoramic shots with narration more interesting, kept the video flowing well
10. • Are there any areas which are non relational?
When sacha picks up the robot, don’t really think it was needed, when they whole vid is about
phones and cameras and items we use everyday, I personally don’t think its that needed
• Did you find this documentary influential and particularly useful?
Good intro, would like to see the rest of it and how it has changed the lifes of humans
• Any areas which were found to be faulty/ out of place/needs edit/missing or need
re-constructing please state below:
I thought the walk out of the door, by sacha at about 0:50 wasn’t really needed
And the robot pickup didn’t really fit
But apart from that very good

• Can you identify the primary target audience? Secondary audience and genre?
I’d say the people most likely to watch this would range from the ages of 25
upwards, perhaps younger audiences may tune in to educate themselves on the
revolution of technology as a secondary audience
• Does this type of documentary feel suited for a Channel 4 programme?
Yes, it follows what you would expect of a documentary seen on channel 4 as it
deals with a current and constant subject in our daily lives
• Is there a clear narrative to follow in this extract?
I think the presenter guides you through the documentary well allowing time to
look at the technology itself as well as presenting and providing valuable
commentary
• Do you gain a strong sense of the technology revolution?
Yes it showcases a wide range of technology, I think the focus is mainly on cmaeras
on phones but that’s the most in use technology anyway so its key these are
concentrated on
• Do you understand the purpose of this text (Uses and Gratifications theory)?
12. Yes I think anyone viewing this will be educated on this topic and made aware of
how they themselves identify with technology
• How does the technology revolution relate to you in your everyday lives?
When talking to members of the public I think most people of our age can identify
with what they are saying, but I think it’s good to concentrate on how much its
evolved as its such an integral part of our daily lives we often forget to appreciate
it
• Which segments of the extract were effective in your learning?
• How effective is the use of sound in this extract?
The speaking parts are strong, obviously there’s some background noise when
shooting on location but that didn’t ruin anything, and the use of music is typical
of a documentary
• Are there any areas which are non relational?
n/a all the content is relative to the subject and adds something to the
documentary
• Did you find this documentary influential and particularly useful?
Found it interesting, I think the way technology was presented in a show and tell
way, informed people about the revolution but didn’t educate in a way that was
boring
• Any areas which were found to be faulty/ out of place/needs edit/missing or need
re-constructing please state below:
n/a thought it all flows really well, the edit isn’t jumpy, nothing seems majorly out

1. Primary audience 16 - 40yrs olds. Secondary 41 - 55yr olds.
Genre - technology
2. Yes, this sort of programme would suit channel 4 and is the kind of programme I would expect
them to show.
3. Yes, there is a clear narrative. It begins well explaining what you the programme will be
looking at. Then it moves onto how technology evolves, then moves onto an expert view and
finally the customers view. Great documentary
4. Parts of the programme show this
18. 5. I work as an estate agent and use the computer to conduct my work. I am constantly sending
emails and making calls to mobile phones.
6.
Improvements...
I feel you need to show people using the technology.
for example; people using the iPhone and the way that the iCloud works and that you can pick
up your iPad and play/use applications etc. the movement of technology is superb in this
context. Also touch screens on the iPad etc.

• Can you identify the primary target audience? Secondary audience and genre?
I think the audience is for any who is interested in technology. I would likely say
that it would be for younger individuals who may be developing an interest in
technology as the main users of the current technology shown in the video are
teens and adults who already have knowledge of the tech.
• Does this type of documentary feel suited for a Channel 4 programme?
24. Yes but I would say it would be excellent for The One Show that’s all I could think
of while watching it. The style is exactly how they do their short documentaries.
• Is there a clear narrative to follow in this extract?
Yes I think Sacha does a great job of informing the audience with facts and
engaging with the public to gain even more opinions.
• Do you gain a strong sense of the technology revolution?
Yes I do the video evidence of the various types of phones and cameras which
have developed over time help to support the facts provided by the presenter.
• Do you understand the purpose of this text (Uses and Gratifications theory)?
Not too sure on what this question means.
• How does the technology revolution relate to you in your everyday lives?
It relates to me greatly as I am a big technology user and am even typing my
feedback on a laptop right now.
• Which segments of the extract were effective in your learning?
I liked listening to the expert opinions which helped to get me thinking.
• How effective is the use of sound in this extract?
I think the sounds are typical of a technology documentary yet the blend of it with
the narration are very good.

Yes, I think it helped me see how technology has changed and made me more
excited for the future.
