Over the past 50years we have seen how various technologies have developed and
prospered to become incredibly revolutionary. During this documentary the viewer will learn
and be informed on a wide array of matters such as how technology has changed the way
we live our lives? And which piece has evolved the most within 50 years. This is the FIRST

• Can you identify the primary target audience? Secondary audience and genre?
I would say that the target audience is very broad in the fact that it would appeal to those who use
some form of technology in their day to day lives, which in the modern world is the majority of
people (15 – 50). The presenter’s statement on the new generation also suggests that it looks ahead
to younger generations to appeal to what the future holds for technology. I would also say that the
secondary audience would consist of an older generation to maybe see how technology has evolved
from when their core use of it would have been when they were younger. The genre and overall
theme is technology.
• Does this type of documentary feel suited for a Channel 4 programme?
The presenter led approach and various cutaways and speed ramps allow it to fit
into that field of an evening Channel 4 documentary. The choice of music is very
upbeat also and would fit well with a Channel 4 Documentary.

• Is there a clear narrative to follow in this extract?
Yes, the narrative follows how technology has evolved and investigates what people have and use
from their devices.
• Do you gain a strong sense of the technology revolution?
Yes as the documentary revolves around the revolution and advancements of
technology.
• Do you understand the purpose of this text (Uses and Gratifications theory)?
I believe the purpose of the text is to educate its audience on how technology has evolved over the
years and what this mean for future generations and our advantages on its improvements.
• How does the technology revolution relate to you in your everyday lives?
It relates to me as I use the devices mentioned in the documentary so it is interesting to see how its
predecessors involved into what they are today (e.g. cameras, mobiles and computers).
• Which segments of the extract were effective in your learning?
The addition of more than one source of expert on technology allowed the audience to gain multiple
insights to how technology has evolved over the years.
• How effective is the use of sound in this extract?
It is difficult to remove background noise depending on the location chosen to shoot however
considering the interviews in the busy streets of London, I was still able to clearly hear all
interviewees and presenter at all times.
• Are there any areas which are non relational?
No I felt that the five minutes was very focused on the topic of technology.
• Did you find this documentary influential and particularly useful?

I felt the documentary was useful in discussing the revolution of technology and what people use
and depend on today.
• Any areas which were found to be faulty/ out of place/needs edit/missing or need
re-constructing please state below:
The majority of the documentary is very good, if I were to suggest any improvements I
would say choice of font and alignment on titles and adjustment of sound when it
sometimes cuts off abruptly when moving onto the next section however overall it is a very
good documentary.

I think the audience would be people around 15-25 with not much experience of technology (as it
doesn’t go into too much detail and is accessible without understanding much about tech). It is
educational and seems to be teaching viewers about how technology has changed, rather than
assuming they have been alive while the technology is changing.
Yes, it’s exactly the sort of show they would make.
Sort of. I liked how you went from talking to the professor to then talking to the public. The first
minute and a half was really focused and worked well, especially 0:55s to 1:30. Some really cool
filming and it made sure I knew what was about to happen. You spoke about how technology has
changed, but not about how it “affects us in our day to day lives” so I think you should do more on
that.
Yeah, the video shows well how impressive some technological advances have been, but I think
there should be more on how technology affects our everyday lives e.g. more communication,
cloud computing, GPS
This is a hard question because I haven’t really been alive long enough to experience any massive
changes. I guess the biggest one for me is how phones are now mini computers which can do
virtually anything. I find myself looking something up on my phone when I am sitting by a
computer, which shows how accessible they now are. Also the miniaturisation of technology
which was spoken about has made tech portable.

The parts when Dave Cohen and Mr Thomas were speaking were good as they really knew their
subject and have clearly experienced the revolution first hand. I think those were the most
educational bits.
Very effective, it’s quite low key which is nice and doesn’t drown anything out. Perfect music.
The bit in London was good but was more about which technology people like the most, rather
than which one has the biggest impact on their lives.
Yes, I would like to see more of it.
At the end it should be ‘The Revolution of Technology’ not ‘The revolution of technology’

Yes, both segments with the experts give good focus on how technology has
changed in a relatively short period. Especially in storage and digital revolutions.

Computers have become integral in virtually everything we do. From shopping to
exercise and especially communication.
The segments with the experts
The sound was good, especially the first time laps. However there was a lack of
sound for 30 seconds at around 3 minutes 30 seconds.
Yes, the time laps with no sound or text
Yes, however you could focus on how you think technology will change in the future.
You focused on past and present only.
3:30 minutes in the is 20 seconds of time laps which has no sound and seems
irrelevant
The documentary would also benefit from a summary at the end as it abruptly
ended. An ending summary similar to the intro would be good.

think you went into enough depth in how it has changed our lives as humans

I’m part of the generation growing up with smart phones ect, so any technological advances are
going to directly affect me
The interviews in conveying how phones and cameras have become an all in 1
device
Good, made the panoramic shots with narration more interesting, kept the video flowing well

When sacha picks up the robot, don’t really think it was needed, when they whole vid is about
phones and cameras and items we use everyday, I personally don’t think its that needed

I thought the walk out of the door, by sacha at about 0:50 wasn’t really needed

upwards, perhaps younger audiences may tune in to educate themselves on the

deals with a current and constant subject in our daily lives
I think the presenter guides you through the documentary well allowing time to
look at the technology itself as well as presenting and providing valuable
commentary

I feel you need to show people using the technology.
for example; people using the iPhone and the way that the iCloud works and that you can pick
up your iPad and play/use applications etc. the movement of technology is superb in this
context. Also touch screens on the iPad etc.

Yes it has a lot of public interaction similar to other channel 4 programs and explores
topic that perhaps may have not been touched on previously.
The narrative is easy to follow and transitions easily from scene to scene.
Yes it clearly displays he contrast between old technologies and advances to new
technologies.
I feel that the purpose of the piece is to inform the public in a discursive manor

I like many others of my generation cannot go one day without checking social
Medias but more so in order to take out basic tasks at college I need to access some
form of technology on a daily basis
The section with the professor an authoritative figure allowed me to fully see the
contrasts between the generation gap in technology.
Soundtrack feels right with the theme but does not overpower the speaker and the
tone of the speaker is relatable and clear.
No I feel that the use of public interviews greatly enhances the generality of the
piece to a wider audience.
It was engaging and helped me to gain a basic understanding of technologies
through the ages.
I believe the documentary could do with some re-arranging/re-constructing to make it flow
better than it is as it stands.

I believe the target audience is around the teenage years of age, with a gradient of less relevance
as age increases. However it is important to note those I the older generation are more likely to
have experienced this “digital revelation” .
It seems very similar to many channel 4 programs such a “gadget man” , where the
presenter mirrors the target audience

Liked the interviews, they where very insightful especially with the timeline information
Not sure if music is relevant did not seem related to the topic but sounds like the stereotypical
backing music you normally hear in documents.
All seemed very relevant to the topic
Did not realise it was not that long ago before the invention of Technicolor

There was a long bit when there was no music or speaking, just backing video , really
liked the tv-video transition.
I think the audience is for any who is interested in technology. I would likely say
that it would be for younger individuals who may be developing an interest in
technology as the main users of the current technology shown in the video are
teens and adults who already have knowledge of the tech.

Yes but I would say it would be excellent for The One Show that’s all I could think
of while watching it. The style is exactly how they do their short documentaries.
Yes I think Sacha does a great job of informing the audience with facts and
engaging with the public to gain even more opinions.
Yes I do the video evidence of the various types of phones and cameras which
have developed over time help to support the facts provided by the presenter.

Yes I think it has been clearly titled and aided by the order of the presentation.

I have noticed within the space of 3 years the change in computer software and technology that is
aimed to simplify life and manage your documents more effectively and conveniently. Also, mobile
phones are evidently the most changed and adapted element of technology (different makes,
functions)

At the beginning the sound is well timed to fit in with each shot.
Yes, the part where the image is doesn’t relate to the digital circuit comments by the professor.
I found the information useful to my knowledge as I now know more about technology, in particular
