• Accreditation:
We started accreditation in the laboratory back in year 2000. In year 2001 we managed to
get accreditation from one of the most robust organizations ( RVA , Dutch accreditation
Council). Since then we managed to maintain the accreditation and get it renewed on
annual basis through surveillance and reaccreditation audits carried out by RVA. During
this process I was heavily involved started as chemist , Quality manager and Head of the
laboratory. I have been heavily involved in closing out action items raised by the auditors ,
setting up and reviewing quality procedures and documentations. During this period I was
heavily involved in training and development, such as preparing and reviewing training
materials.

o I gave presentation on the importance of Minimising the battery usage and battery
recycling during one of the HSSE forums. The presentation was well received and
positive comment was made by Corporate Social Responsibility ( CSR) Manager.
o Gave more than one session of discussion and Question & Answers to Sur applied
college undergraduates on how to manage their career and best practices in
applying for job. This was part of Experience Bank initiative developed by the
college team.
o Registered representative of Oman in Gulf Standardization Organisation ( GSO).
I have started my career as laboratory technician, after few years promoted to senior technician and
for the last few years I became Laboratory chemist (Laboratory supervisor).
I joined Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) in 1988 from High school. I did two years
laboratory technician course in the PDO training centre. By 1990 I started as Laboratory
technician. I worked in the field as well as in coastal terminal laboratory. I was involved in many
projects such as demulsifier and Deoiler evaluation. I carried out also study to dye and polymer
tracing during deep water injection at some of the oil wells . From 1995 to 1999 I was working as
laboratory chemist (Laboratory supervisor) and ISO9001 quality focal point for the
laboratory department. I was in charge of two sections. The morning normal Oil and water
laboratory section and the 24 hours operating section export crude quality assurance section.
3. First quarter of 1999 I moved to Oman LNG (OLNG) and I’m working now as Head of the
Laboratory (Laboratory Manager). I was heavily involved in setting up and starting up of the
laboratory in early 1999 , including but not limited to benchmarking and acceptance of the lab
equipment & furniture from the construction contractor. I analysed the first LNG cargo loaded
from our Plant. I have carried out few equipment upgrade project for my laboratory with
value of more than one million US Dollars.
The major project which I’m busy with now is the new laboratory building project worth
more than few million US Dollars. I have visited many laboratory and refineries locations outside
Oman to gain experience and observe best practices.
I have been involved in staff recruitment since the start and till know. I have developed many
Omani staff. I’m enjoying the team work and always ready for new challenges.
I was heavily involved in the start-up of the plant from laboratory point of view. This
included taking / analysing a lot of samples from different sample points. OLNG laboratory
is an ISO17025 accredited laboratory since 2001. I have been involved in many team work
workshop in Oman LNG. This was to support the top management in provide them with collective
ideas on who to sort out major issues. Tasks were assigned to me such as supporting in reducing
the paper work and moving to electronic form systems. I have been dealing with different LNG
Buyers (customers) and I have visited many LNG terminals at Far East countries. I have
represented OLNG and attended many meetings with the customers and discussed various
issues.
I have visited some equipment manufacturer as part of my evaluation for them, such as PAC,
Scot gas, Gulf Bio analytical and others. I have attended short cross posting assignment with
Shell. I have attended Oil and Gas Workshops organised by Shell Global Solutions (SGSI). I
have delivered some papers as well during the workshops and conferences. I was involved in
organising one of these workshops in OLNG.
I have attended two of the Gulf Corporation Council GSO Meeting at Qatar as registered
representative for OLNG as well as Oman.
I like to come up with new ideas which help my team in performing its tasks. I’m working with
Gas chromatographs and other lab equipment. I have experience with ASTM D86 distillation unit,
flash point testers, RVP, Density, water analyses and other water, gas, and oil analysis. I have been
involved in STP / ETP analyses such as COD, BOD , Total bacteria and other tests and other water
analyses.
4. Environmental exposure:
When I was in PDO in the field , I was involved in disposal of the produced water
contaminated with oil. One of the options was to use biological activities to improve the
breaking down of the emulsion layer and subsequently improve the separation between oil
and water. I was also involved in making decision on disposal of some chemicals.
In MAF terminal I was involved in studies of Safe disposal of produced water into the sea.
This included the involvement of experts from abroad.
I was also involved in a campaign to minimise the use of Plastic cups.
In OLNG I was involved in Hazardous Waste Area and site visits were made to assess the
situation. I was also involved in assessing the disposal of wastes produced in the plant. I’m
providing Data for environmental reports sent to the government (flue gas, SCW, ETP,
etc…). Over the past few years I was involved in the company environment plan discussion.
I reviewed the laboratory safety procedure as well as Lab HSE risk assessment and HRA with
support from other departments.
As head of lab I’m responsible for the waste the lab generates. Over the past few years we manage
to reduce the waste to low quantities, by requesting smaller volume of samples and ordering
equipments which require less sample volume to analyse. I have made contacts with Shell Global
Solution International (SGSI) and other chemical supplier to seek advice for proper disposal of
chemical waste. Now I have started my one enterprise “ Alafyah Quality” to invest my long
experience in supporting Oil and Gas Industry as well as other organisations.
