Design Knowledge Gain by Structural Health MonitoringFranco Bontempi
The design of complex structures should be based on advanced approaches able to take into account the behavior of the constructions during their entire life-cycle. Moreover, an effective design method should consider that the modern constructions are usually complex systems, characterized by strong interactions among the single components and with the design environment.
A modern approach, capable of adequately considering these issues, is the so-called performance-based design (PBD). In order to profitably apply this design philosophy, an effective framework for the evaluation of the overall quality of the structure is needed; for this purpose, the concept of dependability can be effectively applied.
In this context, structural health monitoring (SHM)
assumes the essential role to improve the knowledge on the structural system and to allow reliable evaluations of the structural safety in operational conditions. SHM should be planned at the design phase and should be performed during the entire life-cycle of the structure.
In order to deal with the large quantity of data coming from the continuous monitoring various processing techniques exist. In this work different approaches are discussed and in the last part two of them are applied on the same dataset.
It is interesting to notice that, in addition to this first level of knowledge, structural health monitoring allows obtaining a further more general contribution to the design knowledge of the whole sector of structural engineering.
Consequently, SHM leads to two levels of design knowledge gain: locally, on the specific structure, and globally, on the general class of similar structures.

Sustainability Concepts in the Design of High-Rise buildings: the case of Dia...Franco Bontempi
One of the evocative structural design solutions for sustainable tall buildings is embraced by the diagrid (diagonal grid) structural scheme. Diagrid, with a perimeter structural configuration characterized by a narrow grid of diagonal members involved both in gravity and in lateral load resistance, has emerged as a new design trend for tall-shaped complex structures, and is becoming increasingly popular due to aesthetics and structural performance. Since it requires less structural steel than a conventional steel frame, it provides for a more sustainable structure. This study focuses on the structural performance of a steel tall building, using FEM nonlinear analyses. Numerical comparisons between a traditional outrigger system and different diagrid configurations (with three different diagrid inclinations) are presented for a building of 40 stories, with a total height of 160m, and a footprint of 36m x 36m. The sustainability of the building (in terms of structural steel weight saving) is assessed, together with the structural behavior.
MODELLI STRUT-AND-TIE EMERGENTI DALL’OTTIMIZZAZIONE TOPOLOGICA EVOLUTIVA DI ...Franco Bontempi
The problem in searching for optimal structural schemes by means of evolutionary procedures called ESO (Evolutionary Structural Optimisation) is considered. Such procedures operate on the basis of the general heuristic principle that by slowly removing regions of inefficient material, belonging to a given over-designed structure, its shape and topology evolve toward an optimal configuration. In this work, after the evolutionary principles and the algorithms on which the method is based have been recalled, the ESO procedures for homogeneous structures are extended to the case of structures composed by several materials and applied to the identification of consistent Strut-and-Tie models in reinforced concrete elements.

Numerical analyses for the structural assessment of steel buildings under exp...Franco Bontempi
This paper addresses two main issues relevant to the structural assessment of buildings subjected
to explosions. The first issue regards the robustness evaluation of steel frame structures: a procedure is
provided for computing “robustness curves” and it is applied to a 20-storey steel frame building, describing
the residual strength of the (blast) damaged structure under different local damage levels. The second issue
regards the precise evaluation of blast pressures acting on structural elements using Computational Fluid
Dynamic (CFD) techniques. This last aspect is treated with particular reference to gas explosions, focusing
on some critical parameters (room congestion, failure of non-structural walls and ignition point location)
which influence the development of the explosion. From the analyses, it can be deduced that, at least for the
examined cases, the obtained robustness curves provide a suitable tool that can be used for risk management
and assessment purposes. Moreover, the variation of relevant CFD analysis outcomes (e.g., pressure) due to
the variation of the analysis parameters is found to be significant.
Basis of the analysis and design for fire-induced collapses in structuresFranco Bontempi
Abstract: This paper will present some simple ideas which form, in the authors’ experience, the basis for dealing with structural design and analysis in case of fire actions. To this aim, the following aspects are discussed: 1) the
characteristics of high probability-low consequences (HPLC) versus low probability-high consequences (LPHC) events; 2) the systemic nature of fire accidents; 3) the concept of risk and the related activities, as risk analysis, risk assessment, and risk management; 4) the identification and development of fire scenarios. Specific attention is devoted to the interactions among the different
aspects that need to be modelled, which are fire development, heat transfer, structural response and human behaviour. In the last part, some considerations are developed considering the case of a tall building subjected to fire and few critical results of the structural analysis are discussed.

The role of softening in the numerical analysis of RC framed structuresFranco Bontempi
Reinforced Concrete beams with tension and compression softening material constitutive laws are studied. Energy-based and non-local regularisation techniques are presented and applied to a R.C. element. The element characteristics (sectional tangent stiffness matrix, element tangent stiffness matrix restoring forces) are directly derived from their symbolic expressions through numerical integration. In this way the same spatial grid allows us to obtain a non-local strain estimate and also to sample the contributions to the element stiffness matrix. Three examples show the spurious behaviors due to the strain localization and the stabilization effects given by the regularisation techniques, both in the case of tension and compression softening. The possibility to overestimate the ultimate load level when the non-local strain measure is applied to a non softening material is shown.

Effectiveness Evaluation of Seismic Protection Devices for Bridges in the PB...Franco Bontempi
Seismic protection measures for bridges can be used both for obtaining acceptable performances from new structures that for retrofitting existing ones. With the modern design philosophy based on probabilistic Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE) approaches, the engineers are allowed to investigate different design solutions in terms of vulnerability assessment. However, if probabilistic PBEE approaches are nowadays well established and widely studied also for bridges, the topic of using the PBEE frameworks for the evaluation of the effectiveness of seismic protection devices for bridges is not extensively treated in literature.
The first objective of this work is to deal with the problem of assessing the earthquake performance of an highway bridge equipped with different bearing device: the
elastomeric bearings (ERB) and the friction pendulum systems (FPS). The second purpose is to evaluate the efficiency of a structure-dependent IM in case of isolated system. The examined structure is an highway bridge with concrete piers and steel truss deck. A FE model of the bridge is developed by using nonlinear beam-column elements with fiber section and the devices are modeled by specific elements implementing their
nonlinear behavior. The effectiveness of the different retrofitting strategies has been carried out in terms of damage probability. Choosing the example of slight damage, and referring to the curvature ductility as EDP, the probability of damage during a period of 50 years is: 23% for the structure without isolation, 7% for the structure equipped with ERB, and 3% for the structure equipped with FPS isolation.
Structural Integrity Evaluation of Offshore Wind TurbinesFranco Bontempi
Wind turbines are complex structures that should deal with adverse weather
conditions, are exposed to impacts or ship collisions and, due to the strategic roles in
the energetic supplying, can be the goal of military or malevolent attacks.
Even if a structure cannot be design to resist any unforeseeable critical event
or arbitrarily high accidental action, this kind of systems should be able to maintain
integrity and a certain level of functionality also under accidental circumstances,
which are not contemplated or cannot be considered in the usual design verification.
According to a performance-based design view, the entity of actions to be resisted
and the services levels to be maintained are the design objectives, which should be
defined by the stakeholders and by the designer in respect of the regulation in force.
For what said above, the structural integrity of wind turbines is a central issue
in the framework of a safe design: it depends on different factors, like exposure,
vulnerability and robustness. Particularly, the requirement of structural vulnerability
and robustness are discussed in this paper and a numerical application is presented,
in order to evaluate the effects of a ship collision on the structural system of an
offshore wind turbine.
The investigation resorts nonlinear dynamic analyses performed on the finite
element model of the turbine and considers three different scenarios for the ship
collision. The review of the investigation results allows for an evaluation of the
turbine structural integrity after the impact and permits to identify some
characteristics of the system, which are intrinsic to the chosen organization of the
elements within the structure.
Structural Response of Steel High Rise Buildings to Fire: System Characterist...Franco Bontempi
Due to the significant vertical elevation and complexity of the structural system, high rise buildings may suffer from the effects of fire more than other structures. For this reason, in addition to evacuation strategies and active fire protection, a careful consideration of structural response to fire is also very important. In this context, it is of interest to
investigate the characteristics of the structural system that could possibly reduce local damages or mitigate the progression of failures in case of fire. In this paper, a steel high rise building is taken as case study and the response of the building is investigated up to the crisis of the structure with respect to a standard fire in a lower and in a higher storey: the comparison of the fire induced failures at the different height allows highlighting the role played in the resulting collapse mechanisms by the beam-column stiffness ratio and by the loading condition.
Building occupants’ comfort assessment in the PBWE frameworkFranco Bontempi
This research deals with the problem of the comfort assessment of high-rise building occupants under wind
action. Also if the problem has been studied by the researchers and by the civil engineering industry during last thirty years, appropriate methods to handling the design of high-rise buildings in order to avoid wind-induced occupant discomfort has not been defined yet, mainly due to the high uncertainties involved in the determination of both the demand and the sensitivity of the building occupants to wind-induced vibrations. The main issues related with this problem are first summarized, then the growing, pioneering performance-based wind engineering (PBWE) approach is proposed as tool to handle the problem. The required analyses are presented and discussed on both the conceptual and operational point of view. A case-study is then presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In the PBWE view, the contribution of the work is focused on the procedural step identified as “damage analysis”, something that, in authors’ knowledge, has not been yet developed in the literature.

Before moving on to the repair techniques and materials to be used for the reinforcement of the "cortical layer" of concrete, inside a railway tunnel, it is necessary to make a premise premising that, although many repair techniques are known, they are very different from each other when you are in the presence of a road tunnel, made of traditional or fiber-reinforced concrete, and a hydraulic or railway tunnel, made of prefabricated self-supporting ashlars or traditional reinforced concrete, where, overall, in particular, the concept of durability is enormously different.

ANALISI DEL RISCHIO PER LA SICUREZZA NELLE GALLERIE STRADALI.Franco Bontempi
SOMMARIO

This document discusses large structures and their design. It begins with definitions of large structures, noting that their self-weight becomes a dominant load, load distribution is non-uniform, and complexity increases due to systemic effects. Design principles for large structures are then outlined, including simplicity, optimization at micro, meso and macro levels, and employing precaution given uncertainties. Examples of challenges in large structures like scale effects, emergence of unforeseen phenomena, and complexity are provided. Approaches to analyzing large structures both deterministically and probabilistically are also presented.
This document discusses structural robustness in the context of fire safety structural design. It defines structural robustness as the ability of a structure to exhibit a gradual decrease in structural performance due to negative events without disproportionate damage. The document outlines different collapse types including domino, pancake, zipper, and mixed collapses. It presents design strategies for robustness, including continuity/redundancy and segmentation/compartmentalization. Methods to prevent disproportionate collapse are also discussed, such as alternative load paths, isolation through segmentation, and prescriptive design rules.

INTRODUZIONE
calcestruzzo armato, indicati comunemente come New Jersey.
meccanismi elementari e il loro accoppiamento;
(TIPOLOGIA B), una successiva di uso corrente (TIPOLOGIA A);
prestazionali dell’intero sistema di ritenuta;
segue:
2
• non essere superato o sfondato dal veicolo urtante;
• evitare che il veicolo si ribalti a causa dell'urto;
dal corpo umano;
5. BARRIERE PREFABBRICATE IN CALCESTRUZZO ARMATO NEW JERSEY
in carreggiata.
a doppia filettatura;
3
due moduli contigui;
tra moduli;
mm.

tipo Liebig Ultraplus, alloggiati in appositi “vani” predisposti all’interno del profilo New Jersey
