Airworthiness Directives (ADs)
Definition:
Airworthiness Directives (ADs) are legally enforceable regulations
issued by the FAA in accordance with 14 CFR part 39 to correct
an unsafe condition in a product. Part 39 defines a product as an
aircraft, engine, propeller, or appliance.
We must comply with ADs in order to be Airworthy
.
Airworthiness Directives (ADs)
Where do I find Airworthiness Directives?
All ADs are posted on the FAA.gov Website
Click on Regulations & Policies
Then Airworthiness
Directives
And you will find every
AD, you can sort by
date, or more effectively,
by make/model
Service Bulletins
Service Bulletins (SB) are notices to aircraft operators from a
manufacturer notifying them of a product improvement.
It is not required by the FAA to comply with SB’s
But it’s a good idea to
Service Bulletins
How do we find Service Bulletins?
Each SB is listed on the manufacturers website.
So we will need to go to Robinsonheli.com

Maintenance Requirements
Inspections
FAA required inspections-
1. Annual Inspection
2. 100 hour Inspection (For Hire)
An Annual Inspection is similar to a
100 hour, but must be signed off by
an I.A. or Authorized Inspector
Maintenance Requirements
There are many other inspections
Robinson also has:
50 Hr inspection- Oil Change/ Lower Plugs
300 Hr inspection- 100 + Valve Stem Check, Lube Bearings, Hydro
Filter change
500 Hr inspection- 100 Hr + Overhaul Magnetos, gearbox fluid
drain/flush
1000 Hr inspection- 500 Hr + Track and Balance
We don’t have to comply with these by law
Maintenance Requirements
Most maintenance must be performed by a person who holds an A&P
(Airframe & Powerplant) certificate or is supervised by one.
But there are things you, as a pilot, can do.
Pilots may perform Preventive Maintenance on their aircraft
However, the pilot must feel confident that they are capable to reliably
complete the work.
Maintenance Requirements
Examples of Preventive Maintenance
• Oil Change
• Replace bulbs, reflectors, and lenses of position and landing
lights.
• Replace or clean spark plugs and set spark plug gap clearance
• Replace and service batteries
A list of items can be found in the POH section 8
Maintenance Requirements
Record Keeping
FAR 91.417 states that an aircraft owner/operator shall keep and maintain
aircraft maintenance records.
FAR 43.9 states that each person who maintains, performs preventive
maintenance, rebuilds, or alters an aircraft, airframe, aircraft engine,
propeller, appliance, or component part shall make an entry in the
maintenance record of that equipment.
The person who performs the work must also give a description of the
work.
Maintenance Requirements
How long do we keep maintenance records?
91.417(b) requires records of maintenance, alterations, and required or
approved inspections to be retained until the work is repeated,
superseded by other work, or for one year. It also requires the records,
specified in § 91.417(a)(2), to be retained and transferred with the aircraft
at the time of sale
Overview
In this lesson we discussed Airworthiness Directives, Service
Bulletins, Maintenance requirements including types of
maintenance and record keeping.
