the rupturechanneling experiential flow with mass timber construction
the use of mass timber in high rise construction is in the midst of exponential growth. the limitless capabilities are
being realized; pre-fabrication, massive vertical and horizontal member loading and fiber stress abilities along with
a plentiful resource in the northwest region of the united states identifies mass timber as a sustainable choice of
designersandbuilders.understandingthetechnicalaspectsofthetimberlaminationandtheirconstructibilityhave
been of major focus throughout this research, which was led by instructors; todd beyreuther and darrin greichen
alongwithgroupmembers;dillongogarty,trevorgundersonandantonionorsworthy.followingresearch,aniterative

the focus was to understand and apply education as a gateway to improving civic function. the approach was
to promote sustainable or ‘lifelong’ learning through experiential design applications. understanding how the
human is susceptible to learning was a critical aspect in order to make effective design decisions. research
led to the work of mihaly csikszentmihalyi and his concept of flow, or the ‘psychology of optimal experience’.
flow is understood as a sense of harmonyand union within ones surroundings; one being thoroughlyfocused on the
present;experiencingthefeelingofgrowingbeyondtheboundariesoftheego;leadingtothemostrapidstateoflearning.

architecturally applying the concept of flow required the development of path programs and the characteristics
for each program profile type. anxious profile was visualized best as the approach to the rupture; set back,
no through-way visible, busy and narrow in width creating an overwhelming sense. arousal would begin
to open up, teasing one of the functions going on within the rupture with reflecting light and a sense of the
depth. flow is the autoelic or self-motivating space; a clear sense of bustle and action, openness and warm
welcoming rays of light which penetrate the space. this space lends those who settle within to be vulnerable
and reflect between the city and campus. control begins to become rigid and expected; showcasing places
of higher education, business and retail. relaxation is the exit from the city onto campus, this space is
very bright and open, inviting those into the heart of the spokane campus and also back into the city.
profile application
through an iterative design process, a radiation analysis was conducted on the surface of the south-facing
facade between the equinox. radiation penetration was intentionally guided based on path and building
programmatic requirements, manipulable by adjusting the height and degree of angle of each profile applied to
the path programs. key entrances were targeted as places needing more radiation exposure, along with atrium/
skylight and office space. storefront glazing or mercantile displays were areas chosen for lower levels of direct
daylight. the analysis allowed for a responsive facade to be developed for the rupture path and perimeter glazing.
radiation analysis
identified profiles at primary and secondary spaces defined along the rupture path
range of primary profile angles which correlate to human experience of program and quality of light
realized profile heights and angles based on building program push-out, path program push-back and daylight requirements
realized vertical and horizontal clt panel structure pattern prior to program, space and structural requirement filtering render and analysis done by dillon gogarty and bryan dorsey: final iteration of radiation grid analyzed between the equinox on surface of west structure

construction documents were completed following the design development phase of
our research. researching and developing the various connections for clt panels and how
mechanical systems can be integrated with the use of mass timber was a focus. foundation
and pile types, wall assembly, clt vertical and horizontal structure, mullion systems and
shading systems were documented. innovative design solutions for shading, wall assemblies
and wall-to-floor connections were explored throughout research. the programs for both
structures include; commercial, assembly, business, office, market and residential spaces.

rather than looking to a singular building for connecting dowtown spokane to the campus,
spaceandthethoughtfulapplicationofprogramssuccessfullyrupturedthevoidinconnectivity.
not only does the space within the rupture have a specific role for improving civic function
by supporting and promoting sustainable learning, it is surrounded by buildings of important
programmatic functions that will guide the growth of the campus and city. providing the
community with spaces to buy and sell local goods, conduct business, learn and reside
affordably; flow has been reached through the architectural application in building and space.
