It’s been over six years since IBM’s Watson amazed all of us on Jeopardy, but it has yet to deliver similar breakthroughs in healthcare. The headlines in last week’s Forbes article read, “MD Anderson Benches IBM Watson In Setback For Artificial Intelligence In Medicine.” Is it really a setback for the entire industry or not? Health Catalyst’s EVP for Product Development, Dale Sanders, believes that the challenges are unique to IBM’s machine learning strategy in healthcare. If they adjust that strategy and better manage expectations about what’s possible for machine learning in medicine, the future will be brighter for Watson, their clients, and AI in healthcare, in general. Watson’s success is good for all of us, but it’s failure is bad for all of us, too.

The good news: Machine learning technology is accelerating at a rate beyond Moore’s Law. Dale believes that machine learning algorithms and models are doubling in capability every six months.
The bad news: The healthcare data ecosystem is not nearly as rich as many would believe, and certainly not as rich as that used to train Watson for Jeopardy. Without high-volume, high-quality data, Watson’s potential and the constant advances in machine learning algorithms will hit a glass ceiling in healthcare.
The best news: By adjusting strategy and expectations, there are still plenty of opportunities to do great things with machine learning by using the current data content in healthcare, while we build out the volume and breadth of data we need to truly understand the patient at the center of the healthcare picture… and you don’t need an army of PhD data scientists to do it.

We've heard the mantra, an extension of the Zero Defects movement introduced in manufacturing in the 60s. Is it achievable? How do you achieve it? What does it mean? What challenges do you run into? Are they technical, people, or organizational issues? All of the above? The reasons probably go deeper than you realize.
This talk will look at all aspects of what it takes to adopt and deliver on a Zero Bugs promise. We'll cover a wide range of technical approaches, along with some opinions on their effectiveness and applicability. We'll talk about the people issues from whether people believe it's possible to overcoming the obstacles in applying it. Finally, we'll talk about some of the organizational, habitual, and structural issues that complicate its pursuit.
AST Rewriting Using recast and esprima
Have you ever thought, “I wish it was easier to change JavaScript code programmatically?” Maybe you wanted to write or edit a configuration block in source code. Perhaps you wanted to generate customized algorithmic code. For many, this kind of thing seems inaccessible.
The tools exist, though. In this talk, Stephen Vance will look at how he has used recast and esprima to edit and rewrite JavaScript code, leaving the untouched code completely intact, including whitespace and comments. At the end, you should have enough knowledge to be dangerous and start to write the next automatic programming, AI, take-over-the-world, self-improving software.

The bad news: The healthcare data ecosystem is not nearly as rich as many would believe, and certainly not as rich as that used to train Watson for Jeopardy. Without high-volume, high-quality data, Watson’s potential and the constant advances in machine learning algorithms will hit a glass ceiling in healthcare.
The best news: By adjusting strategy and expectations, there are still plenty of opportunities to do great things with machine learning by using the current data content in healthcare, while we build out the volume and breadth of data we need to truly understand the patient at the center of the healthcare picture… and you don’t need an army of PhD data scientists to do it.
Big Data = Big Decisions

Create software with Zero Bugs! Is that your reality? Why or why not?
We've heard the mantra, an extension of the Zero Defects movement introduced in manufacturing in the 60s. Is it achievable? How do you achieve it? What does it mean? What challenges do you run into? Are they technical, people, or organizational issues? All of the above? The reasons probably go deeper than you realize.
This talk will look at all aspects of what it takes to adopt and deliver on a Zero Bugs promise. We'll cover a wide range of technical approaches, along with some opinions on their effectiveness and applicability. We'll talk about the people issues from whether people believe it's possible to overcoming the obstacles in applying it. Finally, we'll talk about some of the organizational, habitual, and structural issues that complicate its pursuit.
AST Rewriting Using recast and esprima
Have you ever thought, “I wish it was easier to change JavaScript code programmatically?” Maybe you wanted to write or edit a configuration block in source code. Perhaps you wanted to generate customized algorithmic code. For many, this kind of thing seems inaccessible.
The tools exist, though. In this talk, Stephen Vance will look at how he has used recast and esprima to edit and rewrite JavaScript code, leaving the untouched code completely intact, including whitespace and comments. At the end, you should have enough knowledge to be dangerous and start to write the next automatic programming, AI, take-over-the-world, self-improving software.
Ember and OAuth2

In a small company, everyone does everything, so understanding roles is more about knowing who does what at any moment. As organizations grow, specialization creeps in, hierarchies develop, and hierarchies beget managers.
Too often, though, everyone assumes they know what a manager does. They don't discuss it, plan it, or make sure that the result serves all participants adequately. Usually, it's the care and cultivation of people that gets short changed in the compromise. This presentation breaks down the roles that managers fill so you can craft the position intentionally and make sure you take care of your people as your company grows.

20160908 Aesthetic-Driven Development
The document discusses the development of a navbar component for Ember applications using Bootstrap styles.
The initial implementation attempts to replicate the Bootstrap navbar using nested Ember components but results in complex "plumbing" code. Subsequent versions improve on this by:
1. Passing state and actions as block parameters to child components rather than exposing properties.
2. Implementing "contextual components" where child components are yielded from a parent rather than nested, improving encapsulation.
3. Testing challenges are discussed around integration testing of contextual components and validating proper behavior.
The final implementation achieves cleaner code through contextual components but requires Ember features only available in later versions, limiting compatibility.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
