Food security is an important issue in India, with nearly 200 million people undernourished. 2014 Global Agricultural Productivity Report - Release Slideshow
The 2014 GAP Report® uncovers both challenging and promising trends that impact global food security. Our findings indicate that productivity in agriculture is not accelerating fast enough to meet the expected agricultural demand by 2050 through sustainable practices. This serves as a call to action to invest in proven strategies that boost productivity and conserve the natural resource base.

Food security in india
Food security in India depends on the availability, accessibility, and affordability of food. Natural disasters like droughts can negatively impact food security by decreasing food production and increasing prices. The poorest sections of society and those impacted by disasters are most vulnerable to food insecurity. The 1943 Bengal famine killed over 3 million people. Public distribution systems and food subsidies aim to ensure food security, but have faced criticisms around efficiency and targeting of those most in need. Cooperative organizations also play a role in increasing access to affordable food.

- India has a large population with a significant portion below the poverty line. Ensuring food security is crucial to prevent starvation and malnutrition.
- The government has carefully designed systems like buffer stock and public distribution system to ensure availability and access of foodgrains to all sections of society, especially the poor and vulnerable.
- Buffer stock helps stabilize prices by buying during good harvests and releasing during bad harvests. This prevents steep falls or rises in food prices.
- The public distribution system distributes subsidized foodgrains and essentials through a vast network of fair price shops, enabling the poor to access affordable food.

A farmers’ perspective on food system transformation
The document summarizes discussions from a two-day event on food system transformation held alongside the SUN Global Gathering in Kathmandu, Nepal. On the first day, 14 farmers from several countries discussed challenges they face in producing nutritious food sustainably, including overuse of pesticides/fertilizers, water scarcity, and lack of youth interest in agriculture. This event is part of a series of events to “develop common understanding of issues and lay the basis for informed CFS policy convergence work” on nutrition and food systems, called for by the strategy “CFS engagement in advancing nutrition”. In line with this strategy, this event aims to increase common understanding about how policies and investment opportunities can improve nutrition through healthier food systems. The theme was proposed by the CFS Open Ended Working Group on Nutrition, based on the UNSCN Discussion Paper on the topic and can help build learning in advance of CFS policy convergence on nutrition and food systems, anticipated after CFS 44. This event will highlight the opportunities and constraints that different food systems offer for interventions for good nutrition and human health. It will share examples of different food systems and investments, and learn about their implications for other sectors by discussing linkages, tensions and trade-offs
