Anna Pavlovna Pavlova was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on January 31st, 1881. She went on to be
the most celebrated ballet dancer of her time. Pavlova came from a poor family, and her father died
when she was only 2 years old. Her first exposure to ballet came when she was eight years old when
she attended a performance of Sleeping Beauty at the Marrinsky theatre. She was able to join the
Imperial School of Ballet at the Marrinsky Theatre when she turned ten in 1891. Her teachers were

I attended UWM's dance program from 2004–2008 where I made friends with Megan Zintek (to me,
she'll always be just Megs). When my daughter was 2 years old, I was looking for dance classes to
put her in and discovered Megs had opened her own dance studio, Bella Via in Mequon. Thankfully
my daughter inherited my dancer gene and still enjoys taking classes there. I'm so thrilled that a
UWM graduate is using her arts degree and started a business that she is passionate about. I'm very
proud of Megs. The target market for Bella Via Dance Studio is children age 2 through 18 years old.
The studio does offer Bella Barre for adults– ballet barre workout that combines yoga and pilates.
Megs also rents out the studio once a week to a fitness instructor to teach an adult "boot camp". The
adult classes are overshadowed by the array of youth dance classes– Baby Bella pre–ballet and
creative movement (2–3 year olds), Twinkle Tots pre–ballet/ creative movement/ tap (4–5 year

Even now, ballets are considered an art form that only the decently wealthy can ever enjoy. With all
the sparkling diamonds and jewels, pointe shoes, glamorous makeup, extravagant theaters, and
costumes, it is not surprising that wealth is also commonly associated with ballet. The high ticket

Influential philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, stated that "the human body is the best picture of the
human soul." A great example of the human body portraying the soul is through the art of ballet.
From the Cambridge Dictionary Online, ballet can be defined as "a type of dancing in which
controlled movements of the body are designed to express the beauty of physical motion, often
while telling a story, or a piece of music for such dancing." With ballet's long history, it has shifted
through various eras of time, including Ballet de Cour, Opera Ballet, Romanticism, Classical,
Russian Imperialism, and the current modern era. All of which are characterized by particular
ballets, prominent people, and various other theatrical elements. However, as the art of ballet

Dance is never static.
Even if it has specific sub–genres with set guidelines and expected characteristics like other forms
of visual and performing arts, dancers have the will to choose not follow them as often and as
strictly if they please. They're allowed the freedom of expression as well as the freedom to even
create new forms of dance.
In fact, this freedom to create is why modern dance came to be. It decided to stem off of classical
ballet then completely break off from its roots and become its own sub–genre over the course of
decades. Modern has many similarities to ballet, such as how turns are conducted or how arm
strength is utilized, but they are considered to be enemies by dancers.
I would like to explain more about how these two opponents (modern and ballet) are rather more
like sisters, as well as how modern dance has evolved in the past century and how this change
threatens traditional modern form. I will go into the origins of modern dance and what cultural

The body itself is the main 'artifact' or "text" that needs to be understood. The ballet is not just a
manner of linguistics, but the most 'classical ' branch of the language of dance, equivalent to the
