In NYC, access to after–school programs remains a problem for many children especially those
from low–income/unstable families due to the lack of funding by the government. After school
programs are slowly diminishing in the city and many people are not interested in reviving them.
Over the years, many people have downplayed afterschool programs and their benefits to children
especially those that come from low–income/unstable families. The social development of children
from unstable backgrounds could greatly improve by the promotion and valuation of afterschool
programs. They offer activities, memories, and a sense of community all of which these kids need to
excel and gear away from the negativity that surrounds them.
Children in low–income/unstable families often face problems when it comes to their personal
situation. They go through issues with their homes, schooling, and family. Based on research
studies, by the time they're in fourth grade, more than one–third of children will experience a change

Should school start at 7:00 or should it start later in the morning? In Douglas High School, start
times are at 7:30 in the morning. Changing the school schedule to a later start time would result in
many other changes affecting a lot of people. According to the National Sleep Foundation, "The
change will affect the entire community, from students and parents to businesses, libraries, police,
youth sports clubs, bus drivers and many others." Altering the school schedule would influence
numerous aspects of people's lives. Highly coordinated routines would have to be changed and
adapted to the new schedule. A later release time would take time off of students' free time in the
afternoon. Clubs, sports, jobs, and other after–school activities would have to be pushed back later
into the evening. School start times should stay earlier in the morning, since changing routines
would be difficult, students' need free time, and after–school activities would be pushed back.
Perhaps the biggest concern for parents would be having to change and reorganize their carefully
planned, traditional routines. Many people are resistant to change, especially if it involves
reassembling their plans and procedures to adjust to the new schedule. This is a problem for parents'
work schedules since they most likely will not be able to see their kids in the morning which will
leave students unsupervised when they get ready. This is also a problem for transportation since
parents will not be able to take their kids to school, unnecessarily causing traffic and more costs

Youth violence, while not as pronounced as in the past, is still alarmingly prevalent in modern
America. Many people overlook the fact that youth violence is a serious issue because violence is
usually taken in at a grand scale without age oriented scrutiny. In order to eliminate or diminish the
issue of youth violence, we first need to analyze the contributing factors and causes. In criminology,
it is understood that the more institutions that a particular youth is connected to, the less likely he or
she will be to deviate into violence through his or her adolescence. Over 11 million children across
the country are left without adult supervision afterschool in the hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
before their legal guardians come home. The main reason for this gap without supervision can be
attributed to the limited public funding for afterschool programs. Without any positively enriching
after school activities, these kids focus their energy in wasteful, unhealthy or delinquent pursuits.

The secondary problem encountered in this case is the diversity among the students and parents,
school officials, NCPIE officials, and Woodson officials. We see that diversity is a very important
part in forming the coalition, as the student population is a mix of African American, Caucasians and

highest possible grades is a main priority, joining a program or activity after school would be highly
beneficial. Activities and programs that are held after school can be one of the most beneficial things
for a student in any type or grade of school. Participation and dedication is very important within
years of attending school. These activities improve test scores, attendance, and chances for college
or graduation in general. Schools that have implemented after–school programs have shown to be a
very favorable decision for children and have displayed results of having greater scoring on tests
and exams rather than schools that have not implemented these programs. After–school programs
have improved scores for individuals and it has reflected on the school, making the entire school's

were effective. Effectiveness of after school programs, and funding is now measured by academic
improvement of students who attend after school programs. Data on the effectiveness of after school

The Lighthouse is an after school program for middle and high school students. I decided to
research this organization because I have had a few friends volunteer there and I have heard nothing

I volunteered at W.B Sweeney Elementary School in Willimantic, Connecticut. I was with children
in grades kindergarten through fifth for two hours after school every Monday this past semester. I
thoroughly enjoyed helping them with homework, doing activities, and just getting to know them
individually. I grew as a person from this opportunity, learned more about the field I am planning on
entering, and broadened my experience with children overall. The environment of my site for
volunteering was in an art classroom where the afterschool program met after the final bell every
day. The school was a little run down with chairs and tables cracking, but that did not bother the
children one bit. When we arrived, we would sit with the children who were at tables in groups

Many young teens in the United States are classified as at risk youth. At risk youth is those who are
most at risk for engaging in risky activities. According to Girod, Martineau, and Zhao, "Nations
teens have garnered much recent attention because of violence, drug and alcohol abuse, dropout
rates, suicide, and gang activity most of our most prized commodity is in jeopardy" (Girod, M.,
Martineau, J., Zhao., 2004). These teens are most at risk because they are exposed to this behavior
within their community. When teenagers are exposed at such a young age, they are more likely to
engage in this behavior. Research shows that teens are having struggles in a culture that is designed

involvement in community children's theatre bears a multitude of positive effects. I decided to
volunteer with the Portsmouth Area Arts Council Children's Theatre, or PACT for short. After this
assignment is due, I will still be volunteering with them, helping backstage with their latest
production, Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr, which will be performed on the Vern Riffe Center's
main stage in November. However, for the few weeks I was with them recently, I was able to help at
rehearsals for the show. I did everything from helping children with homework to making sure the
kids in the cast were behaving and paying attention to what was happening. These responsibilities,
along with observing the kids ' behaviors, allowed me to see how being a part of a production can
positively impact children's lives. Perhaps the greatest and most apparent benefit to children
involved in children's theatre is the friendships that they make. You do not even have to spend a full
