This chapter examines the historical antecedents that have shaped the present challenges facing African universities. It discusses how the colonial legacy has impacted university development in Africa, with systems being designed primarily to serve colonial rather than African needs. This has contributed to the difficulties universities now face in building institutions truly oriented toward African priorities and circumstances. The chapter is from a handbook exploring issues in higher education theory and research.
