The Romanian tradition of "Cucii" involves beautifully decorated masks and costumes. The main character, called The Cuckoo, wears a mask shaped like a globe embellished with hundreds of paper flowers and ribbons. The rest of the participants are men dressed as women wearing their lovers' clothes, belts with loud bells around their waists, and carrying sticks. They roam the village touching or gently hitting people in the audience to bring protection against disease and misfortune in the coming year.
