2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Affiliate Marketing 101_ The Lucrative Path to Online Success.pdf
1. "Affiliate Marketing 101: The Lucrative Path to Online Success"
Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing strategy where individuals or
businesses, known as affiliates, promote products or services for other companies
and earn a commission for each sale, lead, or action generated through their
promotional efforts.
At its core, affiliate marketing operates on a simple premise: a partnership between a
product seller or service provider and someone willing to promote their offerings.
This partnership is established through affiliate programs, often managed by affiliate
networks or directly by companies.
2. How it typically works
● Affiliate Sign-Up: Interested individuals join an affiliate program offered by a
company. They receive a unique tracking ID or link that they can use to
promote the company's products or services.
● Promotion and Marketing: Affiliates employ various marketing channels to
promote these products or services. This could include social media
marketing, blogging, email marketing, creating videos, or utilizing paid
advertising.
● Customer Engagement: When a consumer clicks on the affiliate's unique link
and makes a purchase or completes a desired action (like signing up for a
newsletter or filling out a form), the tracking system records this action as a
referral from the affiliate.
● Commission Earning: Upon successful completion of the desired action, the
affiliate earns a commission, which is a percentage of the sale or a fixed
amount pre-determined by the affiliate program.
● Payment and Analytics: The affiliate program tracks these referrals and
manages payments to affiliates based on the agreed-upon terms. Affiliates
can typically access performance analytics to monitor their campaigns'
success.
One of the key advantages of affiliate marketing is its low barrier to entry. It allows
individuals to leverage their online presence, expertise, or marketing skills to
generate income without needing to create their own products or services. For
companies, it's a cost-effective way to expand their reach and drive sales through
third-party partnerships.
Successful affiliate marketing requires a deep understanding of the target audience,
effective marketing strategies, and building trust with followers or consumers to
encourage conversions. When executed well, it can be a mutually beneficial
arrangement for both affiliates and businesses involved.
3. Affiliate Marketing :The Good and the Bad
Affiliate marketing, like any business model, comes with its set of advantages and
disadvantages. Understanding both sides can help aspiring affiliates make informed
decisions. Here's a deeper dive into the good and the bad of affiliate marketing:
The Good:
● Low Barrier to Entry: One of the most appealing aspects of affiliate marketing
is its accessibility. It doesn't require substantial upfront investment in product
creation or inventory. This makes it an attractive option for those looking to
start an online business without significant capital.
4. ● Flexibility and Freedom: Affiliates enjoy flexibility in their work schedules and
locations. They can choose their promotional strategies, content formats, and
target audience. This freedom appeals to individuals seeking a more
autonomous work structure.
● Passive Income Potential: Successful affiliates can earn passive income by
generating commissions from past promotions. Quality content and effective
marketing can continue to drive sales and earn commissions long after the
initial effort.
● Scalability: Affiliate marketing offers scalability. Affiliates can scale their
earnings by expanding their reach, optimizing marketing strategies, and
diversifying their product or service offerings. This scalability potential allows
for significant growth opportunities.
● Diverse Product Range: Affiliates have the flexibility to promote a wide range
of products or services across various niches. This diversity allows them to
experiment and find profitable opportunities in different markets.
The Bad:
● Highly Competitive: Some niches within affiliate marketing are oversaturated
and fiercely competitive. Breaking into these niches requires exceptional
marketing skills, unique angles, or innovative strategies to stand out.
● Uncertain Income: Affiliate income can be inconsistent, especially in the initial
stages. It's subject to various factors such as market changes, seasonality,
algorithm updates, and program policies, leading to unpredictable earnings.
● Dependency on External Factors: Affiliates are dependent on the policies and
changes made by the affiliate programs or platforms they work with. Algorithm
changes, commission rate alterations, or program closures can significantly
impact their income streams.
5. ● Ethical Considerations: Some affiliates might face ethical dilemmas when
promoting products or services they don't genuinely believe in or that could
potentially harm their audience. This can impact trust and credibility, affecting
long-term success.
● Time and Effort Investment: Successful affiliate marketing requires consistent
effort, time, and dedication. Building an audience, creating quality content,
and establishing credibility often take significant time and persistence.
● Risks of Affiliate Programs: Engaging with unreliable affiliate programs or
promoting low-quality products can damage an affiliate's reputation.
Associating with products or programs that don't meet standards can affect
credibility and trust with the audience.
Balancing these factors is crucial for anyone considering affiliate marketing. While it
offers immense potential for revenue generation and flexibility, it requires
commitment, adaptability, and ethical considerations to navigate the challenges
effectively. Finding a niche, offering valuable content, and building trust with the
audience are key elements to thrive in affiliate marketing despite its drawbacks.

support when selecting the right platform for their marketing strategy and audience.
Conducting thorough research and understanding the platform's offerings is crucial
for successful affiliate marketing partnerships.
11. High ticket affiliate marketing
High ticket affiliate marketing involves promoting and selling expensive or premium
products or services that yield significant commissions. These high-value items
typically have a higher price point, often reaching hundreds or thousands of dollars,
resulting in more substantial commission payouts for affiliates. The attractiveness of
high ticket affiliate marketing lies in several key aspects:
Larger Commissions: High ticket items offer significantly higher commissions
compared to lower-priced products. Affiliates can earn substantial payouts with just a
few successful referrals due to the higher percentage or fixed commission structure.
12. Increased Earning Potential: Selling a few high ticket items can yield substantial
earnings compared to selling numerous low-cost products. Affiliates can achieve
their income goals faster by focusing on a smaller number of high-value sales.
Targeted Audience: The audience interested in high ticket items often consists of
serious buyers willing to invest in quality. These buyers require less convincing and
tend to conduct thorough research, making them more likely to convert when
provided with valuable information.
Quality and Credibility: High ticket products or services usually offer premium quality,
providing affiliates with more credibility when endorsing them. Affiliates can build
trust with their audience by promoting items known for their excellence.
Relationship Building: Selling high ticket items often involves building relationships
with potential customers. Affiliates may engage in personalized communication,
addressing specific needs, and providing tailored solutions, fostering a deeper
connection with their audience.
Upselling Opportunities: High ticket sales can lead to additional upselling or
cross-selling opportunities. Once a customer invests in a high-value product and
experiences its benefits, they might be more inclined to purchase related or
complementary products.
While high ticket affiliate marketing offers the potential for significant earnings, it also
requires a different approach compared to promoting lower-priced items. Affiliates
must establish themselves as knowledgeable experts, provide valuable insights, and
build trust to persuade customers to invest in these higher-priced offerings.
Additionally, the sales process might be longer and involve more
relationship-building efforts compared to lower-cost products. Overall, for affiliates
willing to invest in understanding their audience and effectively promoting premium
products or services, high ticket affiliate marketing can be exceptionally lucrative.
13. Factors to Consider when Choosing an Affiliate Program
Choosing the right affiliate program is crucial for the success of an affiliate marketing
venture. Several key factors should be considered to ensure that the program aligns
with your goals, audience, and marketing strategy:
● Relevance to Your Audience and Niche:
Select affiliate programs that offer products or services relevant to your audience's
interests and needs. Matching the program's offerings with your niche helps in
driving engagement and conversions.
14. ● Commission Structure:
Consider the commission rates and structures offered by the affiliate program. Some
programs offer a percentage of sales, while others provide fixed amounts per lead or
action. Assess which structure aligns better with your income goals and the potential
for earning commissions.
● Product Quality and Reputation:
Promoting quality products or services enhances your credibility as an affiliate.
Research the reputation of the products or services offered by the program to ensure
they meet certain standards and are well-regarded by customers.
● Cookie Duration and Attribution:
Cookie duration refers to the time frame in which a referral's actions are tracked and
credited to the affiliate. Longer cookie durations offer a better chance for affiliates to
earn commissions on delayed purchases. Also, consider the attribution model used
by the program to ensure fair crediting of sales or leads to affiliates.
● Affiliate Support and Resources:
Look for programs that provide adequate support, resources, and marketing
materials to assist affiliates. This includes access to banners, creatives, tracking
tools, and dedicated affiliate managers who can offer guidance and assistance when
needed.
● Payment Terms and Thresholds:
Review the payment terms, including payout frequency, minimum thresholds, and
available payment methods. Ensure that the payment schedule and methods align
with your preferences and financial needs.
● Program Reputation and Track Record:
Opt for established affiliate programs with a proven track record of timely payments,
fair practices, and positive feedback from affiliates. Avoid programs with a history of
payment issues or unethical practices.
15. ● Market Demand and Trends:
Consider the demand for the products or services offered by the affiliate program
within your target market. Assess current trends and market demand to determine
the potential for generating sales and commissions.
● Compliance and Legal Considerations:
Ensure that the affiliate program complies with relevant laws, regulations, and
industry standards. Understand the program's terms and conditions, including any
restrictions or guidelines that affiliates must adhere to.
● Scalability and Growth Potential:
Evaluate the potential for growth and scalability within the affiliate program. Look for
programs that allow room for expansion, additional products, higher commission
tiers, and increased earnings as your affiliate business grows.
By carefully considering these factors and conducting thorough research before
joining an affiliate program, affiliates can make informed decisions that maximize
their earning potential and align with their marketing strategies and audience
preferences.

testing. Analyze the performance of various elements like headlines, visuals, and
CTAs to optimize for higher conversions.

audience when they make a purchase through your affiliate links. These incentives
can increase the perceived value of the offer.
● Stay Updated and Adapt:
Stay informed about industry trends, market demands, and changes in consumer
behavior. Adapt your strategies accordingly to capitalize on emerging opportunities
and stay ahead of the curve.
● Negotiate Higher Commissions:
Once you've established a track record of success with a particular affiliate program,
consider negotiating higher commission rates based on your performance and the
value you bring to the program.
● Track and Analyze Performance:
Regularly monitor your performance metrics, including click-through rates,
conversions, and revenue generated from different channels. Use analytics to
identify top-performing strategies and areas for improvement.
By implementing a combination of these strategies and consistently optimizing your
approach, you can maximize your affiliate earnings and create sustainable revenue
streams from your affiliate marketing efforts. Flexibility, adaptability, and a
commitment to providing value to your audience are key components of a successful
affiliate marketing strategy.

quality and have a good reputation. Promoting reputable products builds trust with
your audience and enhances your credibility.

tracked and credited to you. Longer cookie durations increase the likelihood of
earning commissions on delayed purchases. Also, understand the attribution model
used to ensure fair crediting of sales to affiliates.
● Consider Affiliate Support and Resources:
Choose programs that offer adequate support, resources, and marketing materials to
assist beginners. Look for programs with user-friendly interfaces, access to
promotional materials, and responsive affiliate managers.

program.
