Understanding your Parish Children and TeensJoyce Donahue
Samuel is sent by God to Jesse of Bethlehem to anoint a new king among his sons to replace Saul. Samuel is initially impressed by Eliab but God says not to judge by outward appearance alone. One by one, each of Jesse's seven sons are presented but are not chosen by God. Samuel asks if all the sons have been presented, and Jesse says he has one more, the youngest, who is tending sheep. David is brought before Samuel and God says "this is the one" and Samuel anoints him.
Living the Liturgical Year in a Secular WorldJoyce Donahue
This document discusses how to live out the liturgical year in a secular world dominated by consumer culture. It outlines the various seasons and feasts of the liturgical calendar, including Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time. It suggests ways for Catholics to more fully observe and celebrate these seasons at home through traditions, decorations, music, and Mass attendance in order to deepen their faith and experience of the mysteries of Christ throughout the year.
This document discusses various topics related to music at Catholic Mass, including:
1) There is still controversy over what musical styles are appropriate in church, including whether to use Latin or the local language and what instruments to use.
2) Over the past 50 years since Vatican II, there have been many experiments with church music but it is now dominated by just a few large publishers.
3) When selecting music for Mass, liturgical, pastoral, and musical judgments should be considered to choose pieces that will draw people closer to God and are worthy of the liturgy.
4) The most important part of Mass is the full, conscious, and active participation of the people, including through singing.
Lent is a penitential season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to renew one's baptismal commitment in preparation for Easter. The key is to recognize how these practices help us turn away from sin and toward true conversion of heart and mind as followers of Christ. Lent calls us to work on virtues that are the antidote to bad habits through spiritual disciplines like giving up distractions in order to focus on prayer, fasting to discover what we depend on, and almsgiving to help those in need.
The Holy Spirit plays an essential role in the Liturgy by inspiring and supporting the word of God, which becomes the foundation of the celebration and rule of life. The Spirit precedes, accompanies, and completes the entire Liturgy celebration. The Spirit also brings the message proclaimed in God's word to each individual. All aspects of life, including work, family, prayer, and hardships, can become spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ when done in the Spirit. These can be offered to God along with the body of the Lord in the Eucharist celebration.
Will Catholics Be Left Behind: What the Church Teaches About the End TimesJoyce Donahue
The document discusses what the Catholic Church teaches about end times / eschatology, as opposed to perspectives promoted in popular books, movies and evangelical Protestant theology. It notes that Catholic interpretation is based on scripture, particularly the Gospels and Paul's letters, rather than a literal reading of symbolic texts like Revelation. The Church teaches that Christ will return once to judge all people, not in stages like the "rapture" or tribulation periods. All Christians will face tribulation together until the final judgment, with mercy based on love for others, not earthly perfection.
The document discusses four main topics: 1) the various ways Christ is present in the Eucharist according to different Christian traditions, 2) common elements of liturgical reform across traditions, 3) areas of agreement regarding the real presence and sacrificial nature of communion, and 4) diverse sacramental practices among Protestants, Orthodox, and Catholics with a goal of increased communion. It aims to foster unity among Christians regarding the central practice of Eucharist.
This document provides an overview of a catechist initial formation day. It begins with introductions and discusses the purpose of the day which is for catechists to discover their identity, understand their role, observe teaching methods, and continue their own faith formation. Various topics are then covered, including a catechist's call, their role as teacher, prayer leader, storyteller and witness for social justice. Guidance documents for catechesis are referenced. The day aims to equip catechists and remind them that the Spirit is working through their ministry.
The document discusses the Catholic Mass, including its structure, meaning, and importance for the community. It explains the key parts of the Mass like the introductory rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, and concluding rites. It emphasizes that the Mass is an important time for prayer, praise, and participation which benefits both individuals and the community as a whole.
