The MACREDIE study examined the influence of gender on communication efficiency and effectiveness in a route guidance task with 56 university student participants (31 males, 25 females) randomly paired. In a Wizard of Oz experiment where one participant guided a "robot" to locations on a map via text, quantitative analysis found that female instructors provided less information to male followers, and male robots/followers had fewer misunderstandings. Qualitative analysis also found gender and role significantly impacted communication and task performance, with mixed gender pairs matching or exceeding all-male performance. Benefits of Concurrent Cognitive and Usability Testing
Typically survey pretesting involves separate timelines and research staffs for cognitive and usability testing. In this paper, we make the case that a more comprehensive and less labor-intensive approach to pretesting is to conduct both cognitive and usability testing concurrently. By testing the same questionnaire concurrently with respondents and interviewers (the users in this case), potentially problematic question wording and instrument design can be more efficiently identified in a way that can be used to improve the questionnaire for both the respondent and the interviewer.
In 2005 and 2006, the U.S. Census Bureau conducted separate rounds of cognitive and usability testing on an interviewer-administered non-response follow-up questionnaire in preparation for the 2010 Census. The usability testing was conducted in the Census Bureau’s Usability Lab with an early version of the instrument. Later, the Census Bureau’s Cognitive Lab conducted cognitive testing of the instrument. In doing the testing separately, we learned that in addition to usability issues, usability testing also identifies question wording issues, but that usability staff does not have the specialized experience (or sometimes the authority) to make recommendations in that arena. Similarly, while examining question wording, cognitive testing also identifies poor usability features, but the cognitive-testing staff lacks the experience with such testing to be able to recommend improvements in usability features. Based on this observation, in 2008, the Cognitive and Usability Labs at the Census Bureau conducted 40 cognitive and 20 usability interviews concurrently and in conjunction to test the questionnaire and presented results and recommendations from both types of testing together. When testing is conducted concurrently, staff from both labs, representing both specialties, can be at the table at once, creating a more efficient methodology. By examining these two case studies, this paper will discuss what can be gained by conducting these studies in concert above and beyond conducting them independently. Examples of the kinds of findings that are possible through this joint research and the synergy from having both research teams involved will be described.

In a research context, computational text analysis may be applied to extract linguistic patterns from people’s language-based expressions. Metaphor detection
Because of the ubiquity of metaphors in language, metaphor processing is a very important task in the field of natural language processing. The first step towards metaphor processing, and probably the most difficult one, is metaphor detection. In the first part of this paper, we review the theoretical background for metaphors and the models and implementations that have been proposed for their detection. We then build corpora for detecting three types of metaphors: IS-A metaphors, metaphors formed with the preposition ‘of’ and metaphors formed with a verb. For the first two tasks, we train supervised classifiers using semantic features. For the third task, we use features commonly used in text categorization

In many research approaches, the textual data classification is done using deep learning models. This is due to the ability of deep learning models to classify a text with a high accuracy and the ability to model the sequence of textual data with word dependencies throughout the sentence. One of these deep learning models is RNN (Recurrent Neural Network). In order to use these models, the textual data and words must be converted into numerical vectors, for which various algorithms and methods have been proposed [10]. Today's pretrained word embedding libraries such as FastText have a high accuracy and quality in vector representations for words. Cognitive interviews were conducted with 37 respondents who had previously completed a survey using all three modes. The study found that phone surveys were the least preferred mode, while in-person and online modes were preferred more equally. This study explored the role of gender in spatial communication efficiency and effectiveness. 56 participants were paired in an experiment where one participant instructed a robot (unaware it was not real) to six locations. The study found that female instructors needed fewer instructions but only with male robots, and male robots had the lowest errors. The results suggest that interactive dialogue systems can be designed to be equally effective for both men and women.

This document summarizes a study that used cognitive interviewing methods to evaluate how survey question response may differ based on whether the survey is administered in-person, over the phone, or online. Cognitive interviews were conducted with 37 respondents who had previously completed a survey using all three modes. Respondents were asked the same survey questions in each mode during the interview and were prompted to think aloud about their thought processes. The study found that phone surveys were the least preferred mode, while in-person and online modes were preferred more equally. Insights from the cognitive interviews provided explanations for some differences seen in previous quantitative analyses of responses across the three modes.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

- 1. Study MACREDIE Research The influence of gender on communication efficiency and effectiveness. Question Are males better at route tasks with a partner? Sample Size 56 participants (31 males and 25 females) – from a UK university (various departments) – random grouping Experiment • Wizard of Oz experiment (2 people interact; one of whom thinks they are talking to a system) – Masking gender & seated in separate rooms • Instructors were made to believe they were talking to a robot + they had no dialogue or script • User had to guide robot to 6 designated locations (in fictitious town) • Only instructors had view of the map and destinations • They were talking to a robot, so they could not assume that there was shared knowledge. • MM/MF/FM/FF – pairings • Custom system developed for real time text communication • System kept a log of dialogue & kept a log of the robot co-ordinates each time a message was sent (meaning that they can analyse the text description) • User controlled robot with arrow keys • Users were given verbal and written instructions and a demonstration • They were informed that the robot could learn routes – so they wont guess it’s a human • They can use forward, back, left and right, but not north, south…. (reducing confusion)
