2. ADOLESCENT PERSONALITY
• Adolescence – period of transition from dependence on adult direction and
protection, to self-dependence and self-determination. It is the most important period
of learning techniques for healthful living. It is a period marked by profound changes
in the physical, physiological, mental, and emotional make up of an individual.
3. • The pubescent period is from12-15 years for females and 14-17 years for
males. Most girls take pride in their femininity; the changes on their bodily
functions influence their personalities, school work, and their general
adjustment to life. Generally, boys want to be regarded as masculine. Of the
developments that take place during this period, sexual maturity makes the
most profound and significant influence on the behavior and interests of
adolescents.
4. • Many facets of intelligence develop at rapid pace with the onset of adolescence.
Adolescents are able to see through the meaning of situations of all kinds. They tend
to develop more interests but may lack the time to pursue these.
• Adolescents in search of oneself is faced with an increasing number of problems
conducive to emotional tension. Interest in sexual love-objects arises.
• Emotional attitudes of adolescents are unpredictable. They tend to swing from
optimism and enthusiastic cooperation to withdrawal and pessimistic depression. They
become impulsive; and sometimes lose control of their behavior in their eagerness to
express their feelings. A wide range of emotions is displayed almost daily.
