How do we identify
ADJECTIVES
Now that is very simple.
Adjectives always tell us
something more about the
noun or pronoun. Let us
understand this with
examples.
Let us look at the sentences and understand the adjective used in the sentence.
1) That is a fast car and going up.

2) Please give me a delicious apple on the table.
adjective noun
In both the sentences, ‘FAST’ and “DELICIOUS’ are used to describe the nouns
‘Car’ and ‘Apple’.
Let us take a few more examples.
1. Mohini has a red dress.
Here the word ‘red’ tells us about the colour of the dress.
2. It was an interesting movie.
Here the word ‘interesting’ tells us about the kind of movie.
3. Father bought four chocolates.
Here the word ‘four’ tells us about the number of chocolates.
Adjectives describe the
Quality/kind of people,
animals or things.
A pretty girl
A naughty child
A beautiful scenery
A ferocious tiger
A friendly dog
A shady tree
A snowcapped mountain
A scary movie
An exciting play
An interesting book.
Numbers are ADJECTIVES too.
Five pencils

Colours are ADJECTIVES also.
A red dress
A blue shirt
A yellow tablecloth

Adjectives are FEELINGS.
She is sad.
I am happy.
He is scared.
They are tired.
She is sleepy.
He is bored.
The teacher is angry.
Shapes are ADJECTIVES too.
A round container
A square class room
A triangular pattern
Sizes are ADJECTIVES also.
A tall building
A gigantic elephant
A tiny mouse
A huge gorilla
A short man
A long skirt.
Understanding adjectives and the noun it modifies.
A sentence can contain many nouns but it is important to understand which
noun the adjective modifies.
Look at the following examples.
1) Please get me a bag of ripe apples.
The adjective ‘ripe’ describes the kind of apples and does not tell us anything
about the bag. So ‘ripe’ modifies apples.
2) The leader sat in a wooden chair.
The adjective ‘ wooden’ describes the kind of chair and does not tell us
anything about the leader. So ‘wooden’ modifies chair.

Underline the adjective with green colour and circle the noun that it describes,
with red.
1. Victoria wore a frilly dress to the party.
2. Our cousins drove here in their blue car.
3. The box on the shelf was dusty.
4. The animals in the zoo were hungry.

6. After walking all day, his feet were tired.
7. Kenny and Joe played an awesome game.
8. She could not believe what a boring day it was.
