this was what she wanted to do. Returning to Ireland, she took up a position at the Design Centre in
Dublin and stayed there for ten years. It was a role that saw her working closely with Irish designers,
then rising stars who are now heralded as being at the top of their game today.
Shelly started with Brown Thomas seventeen years ago, and knows every part of the business, from
what’s happening on the shop floor to working closely with all departments across the business.

Lot 59: This piece just jumped out at me. I love to have fun with fashion and jewellery and this ring is WOW! A
beautiful colour - the gorgeous aquamarine shade reminds me of happy memories from holidays! I would wear
this on my fore finger for day or night!
Lot 173:	I love these earrings! They are the perfect alternative to diamond studs for an evening look. Light and delicate
but with a superb sparkle - these are a must-have for any jewellery lover!
Lot 57: This is such a stunning ring, beautifully mounted, the ring is so chic and has a real art deco feel. The fantastic
craftsmanship is evident in this enduringly timeless piece.
Lot 123: It’s the colour that I adore about this statement necklace. Green is a huge trend for the season ahead and worn
over a fine knit or on bare skin this beautiful neck piece would look equally good. The beads have a beautiful
lustre and compliment the diamonds perfectly.
Lot 47: I was instantly drawn to this beautiful bracelet. I adore the belt buckle detail and the intricate dexterity of the
piece. It has a real vintage feel but with a distinct fashion edge. It would be perfect worn alone with a simple
black cocktail dress or even with jeans and a t-shirt – a real statement piece!

Napoleonic classicism came to an end in 1820, bringing forth im-
mense changes in style of both fashion and jewellery.A more natural
style and silhouette came into vogue that year with the lowering of
the waistline. Motifs of leaves and flowers which had been stylised
in the Napoleonic era flourished and became more organic and
representational.
After a decade of European war, precious metals and stone were
scarce and highly expensive. This period saw the rise in economical
jewellery, employing less expensive gemstones and delicate, often
elaborate, cannetille work to give an expensive and luxurious effect.
The gemstones, originating mainly from Brazil of amethyst, topaz,
aquamarine and chrysoberyl were mounted in clusters and closed
foil settings to compliment and match in colour. The ornate gold
work, formed of wire, granulation, tendrils and scrolls was comple-
mented with small leaves and shells in different coloured gold.

Bangles rose to prominence in the 1870’s, becoming the most fash-

band with a circular gem-set at its centre, or enamelled decorative
motifs. These motifs were often detachable or entirely studded with
cabochon or faceted stones. During the 1860’s gold bangles were
often stylised on ancient Greek andAssyrian motifs.

Miniatures by the nature of their size, objects held within the palm of the hand, were originally created as personal mementos of important
occasions such as marriage, births or deaths.Their value resided in the ability for the individual to carry the miniature with them at all times.
As a result they were mainly designed as objects of wearable art, items of jewellery, such as bracelets or necklaces for women, or alternative-
ly for men, the miniature could be set in a pocket watch, or into the lid of a snuff box.The portraits were frequently adorned with diamonds,
pearls or other precious stones as a show of wealth and status. Long periods of separation due to travel or warfare led to loved ones often
having a lock of hair in the reverse side as a token of their affection.
Collecting miniatures was popularised at French court during the reign of Francois I before spreading to the court of HenryVIII in England,
where they were often presented as gifts to favourable courtiers during public ceremony.Their small size required the artist to exercise in-
credibly controlled brushwork to capture the features of the sitter. Portrait miniatures remained highly popular, for rendering the likeness of
a beloved, until the advent of daguerreotypes and early photography in the mid-19th century. However, alongside this development in other
mediums of portraiture, the style of miniatures in the 19th century, shifted and developed, with the artist wanting to show off their skill by
including details such as clothes and background settings.

The fine jewellery House of Janesich was founded in 1835 by Leopoldo Janesich, inTrieste, where
they established an international clientele. For more than a century and a half the House of Janesich
has been the life and soul of prestigious goldsmith’s art activity, developed in many countries and
through generations.
Around 1913, the house opened up on Rue de la Paix betweenTiffany and Cartier in Paris and an-
other branch in Monte Carlo. Subsequent stores were opened in Biarritz, London, Monte Carlo and
Vichy drawing eminent clients as theArchduke ofAustria and King Nicholas of Montenegro.
After Leopold’s passing in 1880, his son Giovanni started trading gems and pearls with other jewel-
lery houses such as Bulgari,Vever, Boucheron and Chaumet. PostWW1, the Janesich style became
decidedlyArt Deco, in keeping with the great fashion of the 1920s and‘30s.At present the family

BUCCELLATIThe world renowned Italian house of Buccellati is famous for its textural gold jewellery and exquisite silver
objects. The pieces are bold and instantly recognisable, with a style that references the great goldsmiths of the Renaissance.
The family firm was founded by Mario Buccellati (1891-1965) as the young jeweller was inspired by the forgotten antique tech-
niques of ancient Greece, the MiddleAges and the Renaissance. He sought to revive them using traditional tools and methods.
In 1919 he opened his first jewellery store in Milan, practicing these ancient traditions. Buccellati pieces are noted for their rich
textural quality achieved through the painstaking techniques. The signature rigato engraving effect completed by the process which
uses tiny hand-applied stripes to give gold surfaces the appearance of silk fabric. Other methods used include telato, obtained
by fine cross-hatched lines, and modellato, the most delicate engraving technique, which consists of reproducing several designs
chiselled in three dimensions, on a minuscule scale, mainly used for the decorations of the borders. These techniques are used to
create pieces which look and feel like silk, damask, tulle, lace, or linen. The juxtaposition of precious stones with texturized metals
is distinctly unique and synonymous with the Buccellati house.
Mario Buccellati’s unique abilities for drawing and creative mind led him to become one of Italy’s most celebrated jeweller’s.The
royal families of Europe, great cardinals of Rome and the Pope were amongst his clientele.
The expansion of business internationally began in 1951 to NewYork. After the passing of Mario Buccellati in 1965 he was suc-
ceeded by his sons, among them, Gianmaria took over the business. Gianmaria had apprenticed under his father at a young age,
embracing the antique techniques treasured by his father, designing every piece produced in the ateliers. In 1970, under Gianmaria
and his brother Luca, Buccellati has further expanded the business toAsia, establishing the first Italian Jewellers in Hong Kong. This
was swiftly followed by subsequent stores inTokyo, Osaka and Nagoya in the following years. Buccellati became the first Italian
jewellers to launch a boutique in the renowned PlaceVendôme of Paris in 1979. In accordance with tradition, Gianmaria after his
passing in 2015, was also succeeded by one of his children, his daughter Andrea, the current present and creative director of the
Buccellati group today.
Over the century the Buccellati group have widened their creations to silver objects, predominately unique, once off pieces,
marked with the typical characteristics of the house. Recently the group have expanded further creating a line of luxury watches,
both men and women’s pieces, and a line of engagement rings.

Greek jeweller Ilias Lalalounis was born inAthens in 1920, the fourth generation of a family of goldsmiths and watchmakers
from Delphi. After studying economics and law at the University ofAthens, he joined his uncle’s jewellery firm, where, apprenticed
as a goldsmith, he learned the skills that were to determine his future as a master craftsman.
Prompted by a passion for history, he began studying the art of his ancestors. In the 1950’s he was inspired by Greek museum arte-
facts and transformed them into jewellery by reviving age-old techniques while also introducing the use of modern technology. His
creative aim was to convey the spiritual and symbolic link of an object to its historical past, the art of neglected techniques, such as
granulation, filigree, hand-weaving and hand-hammering.
Lalaounis founded the Greek Jeweller’sAssociation and exhibited his first collection in 1957, the archeological collection, inspired
by Classical, Hellenistic and Minoan-Mycenaean art, with modern jewels steeped in antiquity. In the 1960’s, after his uncle passed
away, Ilias Lalaounis started his own company. His collections, consisting of 18 and 22 karat gold pieces, were inspired by the art of
many different cultures and periods. His interest spanned from prehistoric to Minoan art, from Persian to Byzantine, from Chinese
art to the art of theTudors. In the 70’s, Lalaounis provoked a sensation with his collection‘BLOW UP,’ draping the human body in
gold jewellery. He followed this by redefining new means of expression, inspired by spheres such as nature and science, flowers and
biosymbols, the random movements of animal and plant cells, orbits and constellations
In 1986 Lalaounis became the first jeweller to be honoured with the prestigious induction to theAcademie des BeauxArts et des
Lettres of Paris.

its ornate, diamond-studded creations.
The brand was established by Constantino Repossi. Upon completing his studies in industrial design, Constantino took over his
father’s jewellery business and atelier in post-war Italy. The first Repossi store was opened in 1949 inTurin during Italy’s modernist
era.Art Deco andAvant-Garde styles prevailed in the first Repossi collections, which demonstrated Costantino’s ability to combine
both his technical and artist background.
Subsequently, Constantino’s son,Alberto, began designing pieces at the age of seventeen after learning the craftsmanship of the fam-
ily’s atelier. In 1974,Alberto took charge of the house founded by his grandfather, bringing the brand to International recognition.
UnderAlberto, the Repossi House saw the opening a flagship store in Monte Carlo in 1977, followed by the Paris store in the Place
Vendôme in 1986.
Repossi designs were famed for their elegance were celebrated by many influential people. Repossi became the official purveyor
to HRHThe Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1994 which gave the house worldwide recognition. Repossi also became the official
supplier to the Saudi Royal family, followed by Qatar and Dubai. Repossi continues to work with royalty in many countries, and its
designs are enjoyed by socialites, jewellery connoisseurs and celebrities worldwide.Today, much of the work is still done in the same
workshops that were used in the 1920’s.
Following tradition,Alberto’s daughter Gaia Repossi is now leading the family business which is nearing its 100th anniversary is
more successful today than ever before.

Emanuela Burgener founded‘Ribbon for Hope’ in 2017 after her personal fight and recovery
from breast cancer. The inspiration of the project is the symbol of the ribbon universally under-
stood as the fight against cancer. Estée Lauder was the first to use the pink ribbon as the emblem of
the fight against cancer which, today is seen in many different colours representing many different
diseases.
Ribbon for Hope is a handmade titanium and diamond brooch, as many of Margherita Burgener jew-
els.Twwwhis piece also embodies many concepts. Firstly, the ribbon is a message of hope in the ad-
vances of research and technology for the treatment of cancer. Secondly, it is a symbol that represents
a large community of people in the fight against cancer including doctors, researchers, volunteers
and patients. Finally and above all else, Ribbon for Hope is an important fundraising means for pivot-
al research that should never stop. Therefore, all the proceeds of Ribbon for Hope sales are entirely
donated to the Institute of European Oncology Foundation based in Milan.
The European Institute of Oncology (IEO) provides patient-centred care and guarantees patients
access to innovative therapies and to early clinical trials. The SHARP research programme, a GPS in
metastatic breast cancer is an achievement of the strategic interest in early clinical trials. SHARP aims
to identify‘breakdowns’ (genetic mutations) and map the routes that cancer cells take to invade other
organs. Clinical data and biological samples from participating patients will allow experts to examine
the DNA using the latest molecular screening techniques and devise an appropriate cancer treatment
plan.

Motifs of leaves and flowers which had been stylised in the Napoleonic era flourished and became more organic and representational. After a decade of European war, precious metals and stone were scarce and highly expensive. This period saw the rise in economical jewellery, employing less expensive gemstones and delicate, often elaborate, cannetille work to give an expensive and luxurious effect. The gemstones, originating mainly from Brazil of amethyst, topaz, aquamarine and chrysoberyl were mounted in clusters and closed foil settings to compliment and match in colour. The ornate gold work, formed of wire, granulation, tendrils and scrolls was comple- mented with small leaves and shells in different coloured gold. 5 A DIAMOND RING The round brilliant-cut diamond, within a four-claw setting, to an Etruscan revival mount of openwork scrolling design and beaded detail, mounted in 14K gold, ring size N½ € 200 - 400 5A A VICTORIAN ENAMEL AND DIAMOND BANGLE The oval blue enamel slightly bombé plaque with a centrally-set brilliant and single-cut diamond star motif, within a trifurcated bangle and single-cut diamond shoulders, mounted in 14K gold, inner diameter 5.3cm € 600 - 800 6 A LATE 19TH CENTURY CITRINE CAMEO BROOCH The cushion-shaped light yellow citrine carved to depict the profile of a Greek goddess, the frame decorated with rope-work details, mounted in 18K gold,French assay mark, length 4cm € 1,800 - 2,200 7 A LATE 19TH CENTURY TURQUOISE AND GOLD BANGLE, CIRCA 1870 The bangle set with a trio of domed cluster cabochon turquoises, with ropetwist detailing throughout, mounted in 15K gold, with safety chain, inner diameter 5.8cm € 600 - 800 Bangles rose to prominence in the 1870’s, becoming the most fash- ionable arm ornaments. The typical design featured a wide golden band with a circular gem-set at its centre, or enamelled decorative motifs. These motifs were often detachable or entirely studded with cabochon or faceted stones. During the 1860’s gold bangles were often stylised on ancient Greek andAssyrian motifs. 5A

As a result they were mainly designed as objects of wearable art, items of jewellery, such as bracelets or necklaces for women, or alternative- ly for men, the miniature could be set in a pocket watch, or into the lid of a snuff box.The portraits were frequently adorned with diamonds, pearls or other precious stones as a show of wealth and status. Long periods of separation due to travel or warfare led to loved ones often having a lock of hair in the reverse side as a token of their affection. Collecting miniatures was popularised at French court during the reign of Francois I before spreading to the court of HenryVIII in England, where they were often presented as gifts to favourable courtiers during public ceremony.Their small size required the artist to exercise in- credibly controlled brushwork to capture the features of the sitter. Portrait miniatures remained highly popular, for rendering the likeness of a beloved, until the advent of daguerreotypes and early photography in the mid-19th century. However, alongside this development in other mediums of portraiture, the style of miniatures in the 19th century, shifted and developed, with the artist wanting to show off their skill by including details such as clothes and background settings.

  • 32. 32 Tuesday 19th September 2017 BUCCELLATIThe world renowned Italian house of Buccellati is famous for its textural gold jewellery and exquisite silver objects. The pieces are bold and instantly recognisable, with a style that references the great goldsmiths of the Renaissance. The family firm was founded by Mario Buccellati (1891-1965) as the young jeweller was inspired by the forgotten antique tech- niques of ancient Greece, the MiddleAges and the Renaissance. He sought to revive them using traditional tools and methods. In 1919 he opened his first jewellery store in Milan, practicing these ancient traditions. Buccellati pieces are noted for their rich textural quality achieved through the painstaking techniques. The signature rigato engraving effect completed by the process which uses tiny hand-applied stripes to give gold surfaces the appearance of silk fabric. Other methods used include telato, obtained by fine cross-hatched lines, and modellato, the most delicate engraving technique, which consists of reproducing several designs chiselled in three dimensions, on a minuscule scale, mainly used for the decorations of the borders. These techniques are used to create pieces which look and feel like silk, damask, tulle, lace, or linen. The juxtaposition of precious stones with texturized metals is distinctly unique and synonymous with the Buccellati house. Mario Buccellati’s unique abilities for drawing and creative mind led him to become one of Italy’s most celebrated jeweller’s.The royal families of Europe, great cardinals of Rome and the Pope were amongst his clientele. The expansion of business internationally began in 1951 to NewYork. After the passing of Mario Buccellati in 1965 he was suc- ceeded by his sons, among them, Gianmaria took over the business. Gianmaria had apprenticed under his father at a young age, embracing the antique techniques treasured by his father, designing every piece produced in the ateliers. In 1970, under Gianmaria and his brother Luca, Buccellati has further expanded the business toAsia, establishing the first Italian Jewellers in Hong Kong. This was swiftly followed by subsequent stores inTokyo, Osaka and Nagoya in the following years. Buccellati became the first Italian jewellers to launch a boutique in the renowned PlaceVendôme of Paris in 1979. In accordance with tradition, Gianmaria after his passing in 2015, was also succeeded by one of his children, his daughter Andrea, the current present and creative director of the Buccellati group today. Over the century the Buccellati group have widened their creations to silver objects, predominately unique, once off pieces, marked with the typical characteristics of the house. Recently the group have expanded further creating a line of luxury watches, both men and women’s pieces, and a line of engagement rings. BUCCELLATI

  • 53. 53 Greek jeweller Ilias Lalalounis was born inAthens in 1920, the fourth generation of a family of goldsmiths and watchmakers from Delphi. After studying economics and law at the University ofAthens, he joined his uncle’s jewellery firm, where, apprenticed as a goldsmith, he learned the skills that were to determine his future as a master craftsman. Prompted by a passion for history, he began studying the art of his ancestors. In the 1950’s he was inspired by Greek museum arte- facts and transformed them into jewellery by reviving age-old techniques while also introducing the use of modern technology. His creative aim was to convey the spiritual and symbolic link of an object to its historical past, the art of neglected techniques, such as granulation, filigree, hand-weaving and hand-hammering. Lalaounis founded the Greek Jeweller’sAssociation and exhibited his first collection in 1957, the archeological collection, inspired by Classical, Hellenistic and Minoan-Mycenaean art, with modern jewels steeped in antiquity. In the 1960’s, after his uncle passed away, Ilias Lalaounis started his own company. His collections, consisting of 18 and 22 karat gold pieces, were inspired by the art of many different cultures and periods. His interest spanned from prehistoric to Minoan art, from Persian to Byzantine, from Chinese art to the art of theTudors. Estée Lauder was the first to use the pink ribbon as the emblem of the fight against cancer which, today is seen in many different colours representing many different diseases. Ribbon for Hope is a handmade titanium and diamond brooch, as many of Margherita Burgener jew- els.Twwwhis piece also embodies many concepts. Firstly, the ribbon is a message of hope in the ad- vances of research and technology for the treatment of cancer. Secondly, it is a symbol that represents a large community of people in the fight against cancer including doctors, researchers, volunteers and patients. Finally and above all else, Ribbon for Hope is an important fundraising means for pivot- al research that should never stop. Therefore, all the proceeds of Ribbon for Hope sales are entirely donated to the Institute of European Oncology Foundation based in Milan. The European Institute of Oncology (IEO) provides patient-centred care and guarantees patients access to innovative therapies and to early clinical trials. The SHARP research programme, a GPS in metastatic breast cancer is an achievement of the strategic interest in early clinical trials. SHARP aims to identify‘breakdowns’ (genetic mutations) and map the routes that cancer cells take to invade other organs.
