This document is an auction catalogue for a Fine Jewellery & Watches auction taking place on May 20th, 2014. It contains information about the auction house, viewing times, and terms and conditions. The bulk of the document is dedicated to listing 36 lots of fine jewellery and watches to be auctioned, including diamond rings, necklaces, watches by Rolex and Patek Philippe, and detailed descriptions and estimates for each lot. A 7.08 carat diamond ring is listed as the highest valued item, with an estimate of €50,000-80,000.
This document discusses a case regarding a promotional offer by Marks & Spencer (M&S) where customers could purchase three food items for £10 and receive a free bottle of wine. HMRC considered that the deal was actually for four items for £10 and that VAT should be paid on the portion of the £10 attributable to the wine. The First-tier Tax Tribunal agreed with HMRC's view, finding that the economic reality was a package deal rather than items plus a free gift. It determined that the £10 payment should be apportioned with VAT paid on the wine portion. The Tribunal emphasized examining the commercial substance of promotions for accurate VAT determination.

It determined that the £10 payment should be apportioned with VAT paid on the wine portion. The Tribunal emphasized examining the commercial substance of promotions for accurate VAT determination.

Adam's HOMAN POTTERTON 7th September 2021
Our First Auction of the Autumn Auction Season will be the sale of the late Homan Potterton's collection of old master paintings, Irish Art, engravings, furniture and silver from his homes in Dublin and in the Gaillac region in France.
Homan Potterton was and remains an important figure in Irish Art and Culture.
Appointed in 1980 as the youngest ever Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, Homan set out creating a comprehensive catalogue of the Gallery's collection.
Although his time as Director was during a period of economic difficulty in Ireland which halted plans of refurbishment, Homan succeeded in securing major additions to the National Collection from the collection of Alfred and Clementine Beit.

3. VAT Regulations
All lots are sold within the auctioneers VAT margin scheme. Revenue Regulations require that the buyers premium must be invoiced at a

4. Condition
It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. Whilst we make certain observations on the lot, which
are intended to be as helpful as possible, references in the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance. The absence of such a
reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any
others. The condition report is an expression of opinion only and must not be treated as a statement of fact. Please ensure that condition
report requests are submitted before 12 noon on Tuesday 8th June 2021 as we cannot guarantee that they will be dealt with after this time.
5. Absentee Bids
We are happy to execute absentee or written bids for bidders who are unable to bid online themselves and can also arrange for bidding to be
conducted by telephone. However, these services are subject to special conditions (see conditions of sale in this catalogue).

This auction is automated and takes place solely online through our website
www.adams.ie
During the period of open bidding you will be able to see the current winning bid on each lot.
You may place a higher maximum bid of your choice and the bidding will automatically increase
by the next increment.
If your maximum bid is several increments higher than the current bid, the bidding will still only
increase by one increment until there is a competing bid in which case the system will move up
one increment higher in your favour. This process will continue until your maximum amount is
outbid.
**The system is designed to give the buyer the best chance of winning their desired lot at the most
competitive price, i.e. it will not jump to the maximum bid entered unless there is a competing bid
just below it**
EXAMPLE:
Bidder A leaves a maximum bid of €100, bidder B leaves a maximum bid of €200 on the same lot.
Bidder A is now knocked out of the lead and bidder B holds the current winning bid that auto
adjusts to €110 (NB not their maximum bid). The system auto adjusts the bid to the next winning
increment. User B’s bid will only be further executed if another user bids above their current bid
of €110 up to their maximum of €200, after which they will be knocked out and an e-mail issued
advising them to increase their bid.
Bidders are automatically informed by email if they are the current winning bidder, or if they have
been outbid by another competing bidder. If you have been outbid and the auction is still open,
you are free to leave a higher bid.
At the end of the defined bidding period, 10am on Wednesday 9th June, if the highest bid of-
fered meets the minimum price designated by the Auctioneer (i.e. the seller’s reserve price), the
lot is sold.
In a timed auction, the closing time is staggered, with bidding for lot 1 ending at 10am and each
subsequent lot closing 30 seconds after the previous. If there is a flurry of bidding on a lot just
as it reaches its closing time, the lot is kept open for an extended period to enable everybody to
fairly get their bids in.
All winning bidders will be notified by email once the auction has fully ended.

A Stonecutter and builder, of Lower Abbey Street, Dublin. Frederick Darley, was a younger son of Henry Darley. Born in Dublin
and baptised in St Thomas’s Church on 6 July 1764. He was a pupil at Sisson Darlings school in Mabbott Street. Although he is re-
ferred to in 1802 as being among the most eminent architects of the kingdom, he would probably be more properly described as
a builder and developer. The frequent references to him in Bryan Bolger’s papers indicate that he was involved in development
in Mountjoy Square and elsewhere on the north side of the city. He was employed by Trinity College, Dublin, as a stonecutter on a
regular basis from 1816 until 1824 or later, initially with a George Darley (probably his uncle George Darley who died in 1817).
Frederick Darley was admitted a freeman of the City of Dublin at Christmas, 1795; unlike many of the other members of the family
who were members of the Guild of Carpenters, he belonged to the Guild of Merchants. He was active in the affairs of Dublin
Corporation for many years; he became a sheriff in 1798,master of the city works and alderman in 1800 and was Lord Mayor in
1808-9. He was also chief magistrate of police from 1806 or earlier, as mentioned on this freedom box.
Darley married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Arthur Guinness of Beaumont,
Drumcondra, in 1785. The couple had twenty
children, Frederick Darley being the second surviving son. The latter was
styled Frederick Darley, junior, until his fathers death on 29 June 1841.

Though born in Dublin, Christopher Moore spent most of his working life in Britain, emigrating there in 1820 at the age
of thirty and setting up a permanent residence initially in Tottenham Court Road in London, before moving to Howland
Street.
He exhibited regularly with the Royal Academy between 1821 and 1861.
He was renowned for his portrait busts creating numerous sculptures of eminent 19th century political, religious and
social figures as well as contemporary poets and artists. His skill can be seen in the expressive likeness and confident
modelling of his subjects.
In this present example, the bust is set within highly expressive folds of drapery which give a sense of importance and
strength to the figure. This reflected the prominent legacy of William Plunkett, who had twice served as Lord Chancellor
of Ireland. A dedicated supporter of Catholic emancipation he was appointed as
Attorney General in 1822 and worked successfully alongside Daniel O’Connell to
secure it.
When this work was produced, Plunkett would have been nearly eighty years of age.
Moore manages to capture the more subtle and softer features of old age, in the
mouth, the skin around the eyes and the slightly furrowed brow.
Another example of this work in marble is held in the collection of the National
Gallery of Ireland and was exhibited in the RHA in 1858.
Moore frequently visited Ireland, staying in Dublin and he contributed many works
to the RHA annual exhibition becoming a member in 1846. He returned to Ireland
before his two years before his death in 1863, he is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.
