Socially-distanced, mask-wearing viewing is available for three days prior to the sale, commencing on Saturday 10th October. If you are not going to physically view the lots we have lots of staff members who will be happy to discuss potential purchases with you, and answer additional questions you may have. Our removals partner, Irish Relo are on site to arrange the delivery of purchases post auction.
As the health and safety of our clients and staff is of paramount importance to us, we would ask all visitors to comply with our Covid-19 measures upon arrival at Adam’s and Townley Hall.

For female silversmiths they often started their training and commercial production in the silversmith workshop of
their father and continued there until marriage.
The idea of a separate identity as a silversmith was lost during a partnership with their husband. It re-emerged only
after the husband’s death when the widow was then afforded the opportunity to enter her own mark, succeeding
to that of her husband active in the craft. Mary & Elizabeth Sumner, were presumably the widow and daughter of
silversmith William Sumner I. The first mark of their partnership was entered in 1809.

the first standard silver dollar minted since production of the previous design, the Seated Liberty Dollar,
which was discontinued due to the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, which also ended the economic
policy of free coining of silver. There was no real public demand for the return of the silver dollar but
those that worked in silver-mining lobbied Congress forcefully for its return.
The coin is named after its designer, United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. The design
features a left-facing portrait of Miss Liberty on the obverse while the reverse depicts an eagle.
The dollars were produced every year between 1878 and 1904 at a total of 4 different mints. Each mint,
apart from Philadelphia, has its own mint mark. In 1921 production was resumed for one year only, with
this year being the only one where the Denver mint was used.
The mint marks appearing on the coins are “CC” for Carson City, “S” for San Francisco, “O” for New Orle-
ans and “D” for Denver.
Interest in the Dollar set amongst numismatists was low throughout its production years. However, in the
1960s things changed and it became highly sought after by collectors becoming one of the most widely
pursued U.S coins, with complete sets proving to be very rare.

A GIFT FROM LORD BYRON
AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY GEORGIAN GARNET SET,
comprising of a necklace of floral detail, set throughout with fancy-cut garnets, a bangle and a pair of earrings
of similar design, mounted in silver, necklace length 44cm, bangle inner diameter 5.7cm, earrings length 1.1cm;
the owner purchased later a tortoiseshell hair comb and a pendant/brooch locket set with similarly-cut garnets
as well as an element of similar style (some garnets deficient), mounted in silver, hair comb length 10cm,
brooch-locker length 5.5cm, element length 2.7cm, within its original leather case, including a letter of
provenance.
€ 800 - 1,200
Provenance:
During the summer of 1803, while on holidays from school, the young sixteen year old Lord Byron fell in love with Mary
Ann Chaworth. Byron had come into possession of Newstead Abbey on the death of his great-uncle in 1798. Mary
Ann, two years his senior, was a distant relative of Byron’s and she lived nearby in Annesley. The two properties were
adjoining and over the course of the summer months Byron’s devotion towards Mary Ann blossomed. As an expression
of his affection, he offered her a present of this jewellery garnet set, which consists of a necklace, earrings and bracelet
in a leather case. He did not succeed in winning her hand, as unfortunately, Chaworth was already engaged to John
Musters and she was married two years later. While Chaworth does not seem to have been greatly affected by this in-
cident, for Byron his unrequited love had a lasting effect on his character. This first love continued to influence Byron’s
whole life and career and he later wrote ‘Had I married Miss Chaworth, perhaps the whole tenor of my life would have
been different’. She was the subject of his poem ‘The Dream’ written in 1816.
Over a century later, during the first world war, the garnet jewellery set was auctioned at a sale in Nottingham to raise
money for the Red Cross. It was here that it was purchased by the current owner’s great grandfather, with a letter
stating that it was a present from Lord Byron to Mary Ann. This letter was believed to have been a note recorded by
the family many years before the sale of the garnet set in Nottingham. It is also believed that a portrait existed of Mary
Ann Chaworth in which she is shown wearing the garnets.

Blue John is a semi-precious mineral, a form of fluorite that is composed of
purple and yellow bands of colour. In Britain it is only found in Blue John
Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton in Derbyshire. During the 19th
century it was greatly admired for its beautiful radiating crystalline struc-
ture and was mined for its ornamental value.
The earliest known application of it is in the decorative arts was in the
panels on fireplaces, dating to the mid-eighteenth century. Production in-
creased into the 19th century, with the creation of numerous domestic objet
d’arts, such as bowls, chalices, knife handles, candelabra and urns. The
colourful stone was also used in the columns of important country houses
in Britain, most notably Chatsworth, home to the Duchess of Devonshire.

Rev. Robert Morrison (1782-1834) of the London Missionary Society, studied Chinese and
arrived in Canton in 1807 where he conceded his identity, as Protestant missionaries were
disapproved of by The East India Company. However, the E.I.C. realised the importance of
Morrison’s in-depth research into the Chinese language and backed his proposal to print
a comprehensive Chinese dictionary. A printing press and a printer (P.P. Thomas) were set
up in Macao and the volumes were published 1815-1823. The E.I.C. continued to oppose
his missionary activities and although he was taken on as interpreter in Lord Amhursts
abortive mission to Peking (Beijing). The dictionary remains his outstanding achievement.

largely due to misrule of the sultans, but has left behind a nostalgia for its civilisation, particularly by
