The Deepwell Collection
Deepwell was the home of the Reihill family for over 70 years; and the collection was amassed by two generations of the same family. John P. Reihill Snr originally bought the house and with the advice and guidance of Senator Joseph Brennan he set about decorating the walls with pictures from the Waddington Galleries and from Leo Smith at the newly established Dawson Gallery. He was a patron of the sculptor Jerome Connor, commissioning several works from him directly as well as buying pieces from him and from the Waddington Galleries.
Several decades later his son John P. Reihill, who died last year, continued the family tradition of collecting. He acquired numerous traditional works together with a collection of works by Roderic O’Conor and contemporary artworks by artists such as Louis le Brocquy. This is the second and final tranche of Irish pictures and sculpture coming to us from the estate of John P. Reihill.
The Roth Collection
William and Joan Roth’s introduction to Ireland began as a result of William’s passion for the literature of W.B. Yeats. He compiled a bibliography of Yeats’ works for the Yale University Library in Connecticut. The Roth’s got married in 1947 and decided to honeymoon in Ireland. It was during this time and through his connections and literary contacts that they developed a real affinity for the country; they in turn were embraced by Ireland’s literati.
Many decades later they purchased Hymenstown House in Cashel and they set about furnishing it in grand style. They initially collected 18th and 19th century artworks and they frequented galleries such as Cynthia O’Connor, Oriel Gallery and the Godolphin. Later they began to embrace 20th century pieces, some of which were bought in these rooms. The paintings offered in this sale evidence their open-mindedness in collecting more contemporary artworks like le Brocquy, Ballagh and Farrell which they bought mainly from the Taylor Galleries.
Despite the fact that William M. Roth was the scion of a shipping empire, he devoted much of his life to public service. He was a philanthropist and donated the land surrounding his home in Sonoma Mountain, California to a national reserve.

The Ib Jorgensen Collection
It is rare for anyone to secure renown and the regard of their peers in two different fields, but this has certainly been the achievement of Ib Jorgensen. When Ib opened his Molesworth Street gallery in (1998) he had already achieved substantial success as a couturier in Dublin, London and internation- ally and he worked with a similar focus, ambition and determination over the next sixteen years to make his mark as a gallerist and art dealer.
From the very beginning Ib created a setting that became a demonstration of his own personality and taste. Behind the polished and impressively equipped door on Molesworth Street one stepped into a townhouse where his attention to countless complex details ensured that pictures were presented to their full potential in discreetly elegant rooms. In many ways the gallery became the extension of his home and the exemplar of a Dublin townhouse interior.
Ib’s clients came to know not only his own excellent visual judgement and instinct, a knowledge of artists honed over many years of collecting and a care in research and provenance, but also his insistence on a consistently high qual- ity of presentation. No expense or trouble was spared in his choice of frames. Pictures acquired from Ib were designed to be the showpieces of the walls they were to hang on.
His reputation as an art dealer was initially established in the secondary mar- ket, showing paintings by a wide range of major late nineteenth and twentieth century artists, predominantly Irish but also with some British or European works included. Unusually for an Irish gallery he showed at the Olympia Fine Art and Antiques fair in London on several occasions and this ambition was
also reflected in the extensive and scholarly Jorgensen Gallery exhibitions of works by George Campbell, Norah McGuinness and Grace Henry, in which projects he was able to call upon the expertise of Sile Connaughton-Deeny. Alongside this, Ib quickly began to build an impressive stable of contemporary painters and sculptors. Guided by his own eye and self-belief, he championed Patrick Pye and held several notable exhibitions of new work by this fine painter, as well as showing many younger Irish artists and introducing several British artists to Dublin. Many artists gained from Ib’s insight as well as his advice on presentation, framing and much else. It is telling that Kevin Gaines,

Margaret Hegarty and the silversmith William Comyns
This remarkable private Irish collection of 18th , 19th and 20th century silverware comprising over 400 lots came together through the great interest Margaret Hegarty had in the medium and whilst there is a great range of wares on offer there is a common strand that runs through the entire and that is quality and condition. Remarkably however, Margaret favoured one particular silversmith, William Comyns (1836-1916), who was known for his stylish, feminine and delicate work, and indeed her collection has more pieces by Comyns than any other silversmith.
It is exceedingly rare that a large and varied collection of work by such a well regarded ‘fin de siècle’ silversmith as William Comyns comes on the market. Indeed so rare is it, that this collection could arguably be described as a mini-retrospective exhibition of his work.
William Comyns, established his workshop in London’s Soho in 1858 at the age
of 22, after completing his apprenticeship with George Richards. He started with tools, patterns and benches that he had acquired for £100. From this humble origin he grew his company into an enormously successful international firm, achieving major successes in the 1880’s, 90’s and early 20th century. Comyn’s workshop sup- plied silver to some of the world’s finest silver retailers, including Tiffany & Co. New York and the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company in London. In addition, his workshop produced and supplied silverware to the Royal Family, both directly and indirectly via the firm of Garrards, even producing the silver for the mausoleum of Queen Victoria.
The firm specialised in Victorian and Art Nouveau styles, largely using the die-stamping technique, coupled with traditional methods. They gained a strong reputation for quality and expanded their workshops, re-locating three times, even- tually settling in 41 Beak Street, Soho in the early 1880’s.
William Comyns died in 1916, leaving the firm to his two sons. They were soon faced with difficult times, with World War I and also with fashions changing from their trademark Victorian and Edwardian styles. Charles died in 1925 whilst attend- ing an auction at Christie’s, leaving the firm to his brother Richard. The financial crash of 1930 and World War II pushed the company further into decline. Richard died in 1953. The firm changed hands a few times until finally due to bad debts, the firm went into liquidation in the 1980’s and was subsequently bought by the Royal Selangor Company of Malaysia.

Whyte's Movie Poster Auction Saturday 31 May 2014
We are pleased to present the largest collection of vintage movie posters ever offered at auction in Ireland.
This collection was formed by a family member of the present owner. He sourced them from cinemas in Ireland, and many of the 1940s to 1960s posters bear censorship, (see lot 317B). There are many rare and desirable posters included, and also many little known titles which will appeal to both specialists and those to whom these movies have a special significance. All the posters in this collection were actually used in cinemas in cities and towns in Ireland. The posters moved with the films and thus could have been shown in dozens of cinemas before they went into this collection. All are folded and minor flaws that are common include handling wear, fold wear, creases, wrinkles, pinholes, tears, stains, writing, tape, etc. Some of the terms used to describe poster condition are: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, Near Mint, and Mint. The term “about” means almost, e.g. “about fine” means almost or near fine. MINT: Item is “as new” or in the same condition as the day it was made. The item may or may not literally be in “perfect” condition, but it does exhibit an amazing state of preservation with virtually no perceptible flaws of any kind, other than very minor flaws that may have occurred during the printing process. NEAR MINT: Superb. Unused or very carefully used, but with some minor storage defect, one pinhole in each corner or some other very minor flaw on an otherwise unused poster. Item may be in “never-used” condition or may have been used in the cinema, but was carefully preserved after use. VERY FINE: Used in the cinema, but carefully preserved after use. An above-average poster exhibiting minimal signs of use. Bright and clean, no major defects but possible accumulation of several minor ones, such as a small border chip, handful of small pinholes in border or edge tears, aging on older pieces, paper sightly yellowed but not brown, minimal or slight restoration if professionally done, folds or creases, not soiled, clean and bright, no frontal tape repairs, image area undamaged, not more than two minor tears less than 1” in length. FINE: Still a very nicely preserved item.

20% (excludingVAT) is added to the hammer price of all lots. An
additional fee of 3% (excluding VAT) is charged to on-line
bidders.
ROOM BIDDERS
1. Room bidders must register and obtain a bidding number
on arrival. Proof of identity is required from clients new to us.
2. If successful in obtaining a lot please ensure you display your
number clearly to the auctioneer and that it is your number
that is called out. If there is any doubt about the hammer
price or buyer, please draw this to the attention of the
auctioneer immediately
3. Payment may be made by cash, bank draft, cleared cheque,
debit or credit card — we accept Mastercard orVisa (a charge
of 2% is made on credit card transactions). There is no charge
on debit card transactions..
ABSENTEE BIDDING
1. If you are unable to attend you may bid before the sale, using
the form provided. Enter the maximum you are prepared to
offer for each lot and the auctioneer will represent you as if
you are personally attending the sale. Lots are knocked down
at one step above the next highest bid, and not necessarily
at your highest bid. Example: your bid is €1,000 and next
highest bid is €800 – the hammer price is €850.
2. LIMIT BIDDING: Absentee bidders may limit their total
purchases to a set amount by entering their limit on the
bidding form. This is especially useful for bidders wishing to
cover as many lots as possible while setting a maximum
amount to spend.
3. “OR”BIDDING: Absentee bidders who wish to bid on two or
more lots, but only wish to purchase one, may do so by
entering “OR” between the bids – the lots will be bid on in
catalogue order.
4. EQUAL BIDS: In the event of equal bids being received for
the same lot the first received will be given preference. If the
instruction “break ties” is entered on the bid form the
auctioneer will increase the bid by one step in the event of
equal bids being received or in the event of a tie with a room
bidder.
5. “BUY”BIDS: Unless otherwise instructed bids of“Buy”or“Buy
at Best”shall be taken to indicate bids of up to three times the
stated higher estimate in the catalogue.
6. LIVE INTERNET BIDDING:You may watch and/or bid live with
video and audio link to the saleroom on our website
www.whytes.ie
7. LIVE TELEPHONE BIDDING may be arranged on request,
subject to availability and given at least 24 hours notice. This
facility is only available on lots estimated at €1,000 or more,
and a minimum bid may be requested.
8. INVOICING AND PAYMENT: Successful absentee bidders will
be sent a pro forma invoice immediately after the sale with
details of payment methods. All invoices must be paid within
7 days of the date of the sale or the lot(s) may be deemed in
default and any subsequent losses incurred on resale
become the responsibility of the bidder. The Auctioneers and
House Agents Act, under which we are licensed to hold public
auctions, only allows for lots to be handed over to purchasers
when paid for in full.
PRICES REALISED
A complete list of prices realised and unsold lots will be posted
to our Internet website (www.whytes.ie) on the day after the
sale.
EXPORT LICENCES
Purchasers from outside the State are reminded that export
licences are required for all archaeological items, as well as
artworks and documents that have been in the State for more
than 25 years. Furher details are available from the National
Museum, The National Gallery of Ireland or the Department of
The Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The onus on obtaining
such licences is on the purchaser or the purchaser’s shipper.

Stephen Bone NEAC (1904-1958)
THE CUSTOM HOUSE, DUBLIN
oil on board
signed lower left; signed, titled and with artist’s address
[140 Haverstock Hill, NW7] on reverse
12 x 16in. (30.48 x 40.64cm)
Born in London, the son of artist Sir Muirhead Bone and
author Gertrude Dodd, Stephen Bone first exhibited at
the NEAC at the age of sixteen, and shortly afterward
enrolled at the Slade School of Art (1922-24). In 1928
he collaborated with his friend, the Irish artist William
Eric Horsbrugh-Porter (see lot 132), painting murals for
Piccadilly Underground; the pair also shared a flat in
Knightsbridge. The following year he married the artist
Mary Adshead, and together they travelled across Britain,
Italy and Greece. Around the same time Bone seems
to have also visited Ireland, for in 1929 he held a joint
exhibition with another Irish artist, Sine MacKinnon, at
the Fine Art Society, London, where he exhibited mainly
Connemara landscapes. At the outbreak of World War
II he re-visited Dublin; it was during this visit in 1939
that Bone exhibited the work, The Walls of Dublin, at the
RHA. During the war he served as a camouflage officer
(1939-43) and as an official war artist attached to the
navy (1943-45). He returned to Dublin in 1947, painting
views of O’Connell Street Bridge, the Customs House and
Trinity College (all of which sold through these rooms, 19

OUR LADY QUEEN OF IRELAND, 1933
signed colour print
signed in pencil in the margin and signed in the plate lower right; with title printed lower centre and a
message from His Holiness, Pope Pius XI printed lower right and dated Sunday June 26, 1932
12¼ x 10¼in. (31.12 x 26.04cm)
In its original frame of M.H. Gill O’Connell Street Dublin. The oil of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland was
commissioned by the Gill family of Dublin - owners of the publishing company, which later became Gill and
Macmillan. The model for Our Lady was Sarah (‘Sally’) Byrne (later Deale), a student of Seán Keating’s at
the College of Art and later a staff member there. Her portrait was widely painted by her contemporaries at
the time, including Keating whose son Justin was the model for the figure of the child in the present work.
Justin later became a Labour Party minister in the 1970s government of Liam Cosgrave. In his article -
Taking a politician unawares - for the Irish Times on June 16, 2012 Michael Parsons reflected on the artwork
commissioned for the 31st International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin 80 years ago and focused on the
present work. Parson’s noted that, “According to the Catholic Bulletin, a framed print [similar to the present
example we can assume] was presented to Pope Pius XI in the Vatican in 1934 and the artist was praised for
depicting the “Madonna”, for the first time, with “Gaelic features”.”

1916 A bottle of 100 year old whiskey by Dublin Whiskey Distillery.
Matured in cask for over fifty three years, in bond since 1916 until bottled by P & F McGlade, 96 Donegall
Street, Belfast, in 1966. As far as we can ascertain this is the oldest Irish whiskey to ever be offered at auction.
Accompanied by correspondence with Lyle & Kinahan including a letter to the latter, dated 22 March 1966
instructing the firm to sell 2 of the casks to a broker and to bottle the remaining cask. As far as we are aware
only four bottles remain extant, of which this is one.
Original content was 75cl; level is now just below the neck. 70 proof.
Provenance:
Frank McGlade;
Thence by descent
P & F McGlade’s Bar was located at 96 Donegall Street, and 31 Little Donegall Street Belfast. It was founded
in 1888 by Patrick and Frank McGlade, members of an established family of publicans in the city, and was
initially named The Arcade. Patrick and Frank were already owners of a number of bars in the city including
the Queens Cafe in Queen’s Arcade. Within ten years the brothers monopolised the licensed trade in the area
of Donegall Street, owning the International Restaurant Bar & Billiard Hall (destroyed by German bombs in
1941), and the Grand Metropole Hotel.
Located beside the offices of the Irish News and The Belfast Telegraph McGlade’s became a favourite haunt
for both local journalists and those from out of town - in more recent times including many from the
Republic, Britain and elsewhere, sent to cover the Troubles. In one year alone the vistors book boasted over
1,000 entries from journalists. During the war the bar attracted huge numbers of American GI’s. Other
clientele included students and staff from the Art College, local politicians including Gerry Fitt, lawyers from
the courts nearby, and others. According to one review “it was one of the few places during the Troubles that
could be considered a true “melting pot”. Rich and poor, Protestant and Catholic all mingled in harmony. A
haven in a sea of madness.”
”It had a Penny Farthing bicycle mounted on the wall in the upstairs back lounge, boasted the longest bar
counter in Ireland in the downstairs public bar and Mr Frank McGlade, the owner, sported a fresh flower
in his buttonhole every day. The pub was unfortunately burnt down in a fire caused by an electrical fault
in 1983. Ironic and tragic considering so many other Bars in town were destroyed in much less innocent
circumstances.” It had passed into the hands of Bass Ireland a year before the fire.
Dan McDermott, brother of Seán McDermott, one of the signatories to the Proclamation worked behind
the bar at McGlade’s in the early 1900s. Seán spent some time in Belfast as well, where he worked as a tram
conductor from 1905 until he became a full time organiser for Sinn Fein in 1907.
Dublin Whiskey Distillery Company (which became known as DWD) was a limited company formed by
a consortium of seven businessmen including James Walker and William Sealy, better known as printers
and paper merchants. The distillery, in Jones Road, was completed in 1873 and by the 1880s was producing
over 500,000 gallons of whiskey a year. The distillery was state of the art for the time with an electric turbine
driven either by a wheel in the Tolka or steam engines. a big wheel in the adjoining River Tolka or by one of
the plant’s steam engines.
In 1891, DWD joined forces with George Roe and William Jameson - to form the Dublin Distillers Company
Limited (DDC). Each one of these distilleries had huge output and only used pot stills, totally ignoring the
profitability and efficiency of Coffey Stills and grain whiskey, which was increasing being used by the Scots.
Each member of DDC continued to produce Irish pot still whiskey under its own brand name and were
therefore often in direct competition to each other. World War I, Irish Independence, the Civil War and
American Prohibition were to deal deadly blows to all three of these distilleries which had an overproduction
capacity for their ever diminishing markets. It is likely that the Jones Road Distillery stopped full time
distilling in 1926, however it appears that they may have continued distilling irregularly until 1945. The last
known whiskey from Jones Road was a bottling of a whiskey distilled in 1942. An apartment complex, named
The Distillery is on the site and incorporates some of the original buildings.

TASTING NOTE:
Bright bronze in colour with the faintest green tinge. The aromas are harmonious and enticing with touches
of beeswax, melon, white chocolate, linseed oil, dried apricots, sultanas and poached pears. Very typical
of old Dublin pot still whiskeys, with just a faint hint of old engine oil on the nose. The palate is dry and
very smooth. No harsh oak as can often be found in very old whiskeys. Flavours of honey, pepper, sultanas,
stewed fruits, mocha and rich sherry. The quality really shines through on the finish which is long lasting
and rich.
Al Higgins, December 2016.

Green Spot Whiskey, bottled by Mitchell & Son circa 1960s.
John Jameson & Sons, Bow Street, 10 Year-Old Pot Still Whiskey, 75° Proof. Mid-shoulder. Extremely rare.
Provenance:
This whiskey was sold by Jameson’s to wine merchants Mitchell & Son, who bottled it under their own label.
In the early part of the 20th century it was part of a range of whiskeys under their ‘Spot’ brand name. This
name originated from their practice of marking casks of different ages with a daub or spot of coloured paint.
There was a Blue Spot, Red Spot and Yellow Spot, but Green Spot emerged as their most popular whiskey and
is one of the few ‘whiskey bonder brands’ to survive to modern day.
