The document discusses improving reading comprehension through the use of higher order thinking activities. It notes that while test scores in grade 3 were high, they dropped in grade 4, suggesting poor higher-order thinking skills. The study aims to incorporate strategies like predicting, making connections, visualizing, inferring, questioning, and summarizing to improve comprehension. A pre-experimental one shot case study will be used, testing reading skills before and after teaching the strategies to grade 3 students through modeling and practice.
The Effect of Discovery Learning Method Application on Increasing Students’ L...iosrjce
Curriculum of 2013 has been started since July 2013 in schools appointed as the implementer. This
study is experimental study with one group pretest-posttest design. It aims at discovering whether discovery
learning model implementation could increase student’s listening score and social attitude in accordance with
curriculum of 2013 implementation. The subjects of this study are 37 students of class X IPA 5 Public High
School 2 Jember in their 2nd semester of 2014/2015 academic year. This study concluded that the
implementation of discovery learning model could increase students’ listening score and social attitude, with
significance value of 0,005 (z = -2,823, p < 0,001), with medium effect size for listening score and significance
value of 0,000 (-4,875, p < 0,001), with large effect size for social attitude.
WHAT ARE THE SUITABLE INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY AND MEDIA FOR STUDENT LEARNING S...IJITE
This study aims to find out what instructional strategy and media more properly based on learning styles in
middle schools. For this purpose, 307 students of 7th to 9th grade from three middle schools were the
respondents. Index Learning Styles was used to know the student learning styles based on Felder-Silverman
learning styles. The students were also asked with the questions to know what instructional strategy and
media they like much. The results show instructional strategies that could be applicated in middle schools
are; question and answer methods, student presentations, games and simulations, lectures, problem solving
based learning, role playing, and panel discussions. Instructional media that could be applicated are;
pictures, graphics, videos, simulations, online group learning, newspapers, chatting/messenger, powerpoint
slides, computer animations, book/e-book, magazines, audio recorded, and email. This is than checked off
with the combinations of student learning style to get the most suitable one.

LEARNER-CENTERED TEACHING: THE STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF LEARNING SKILLS AND STRATEGIESijejournal
Students are challenged to develop their own learning skills and strategies for life-long learning. With this,
the study investigated and analyzed the level of learning skills and strategies of the students in relation to
the extent of implementation of learner-centered teaching in the classroom. This study conducted a survey
in a high school institution where 900 students from first year to fourth year levels were considered as
respondents. A survey tool was used to evaluate the students’ level on their learning skills, collaborative
learning, and study skills through learner-centered teaching. It was found out that students rated
themselves as Good in their learning skills and strategies. This leads to enriching more the learning skills
and strategies of the students and providing them more opportunities to be engaged in meaningful activities
from which they develop their own knowledge and skills applicable in their day-to-day lives

Statement of the problem
The issue to be studied is determining whether or not the tutoring program is effective. There are 60 eighth grade students currently enlisted as tutors for sixth grade students; each tutor has to meet passing grade requirements and show efficiency in being a positive role model for these younger classmen. They have to demonstrate skills in organization, completing work within a timely manner, appropriate social skills, good study habits, etc. Researchers would like to see how effective this program has been for the younger students and see if they improve in grades and how these study habits are affected by the tutoring program.
STEM Program
This study conducted is based on students with disabilities who has entered the STEM program to enhance his and her learning. The disability is based on a learning disability in math. The article has presented how important tutoring younger children with the older grade has not only helped the tutors but the tutees self-esteem, it helps the teachers alleviate the stress of teaching. This article has shown how the younger student’s grades has improved due to the older grade children’s tutoring skills.
“At risk” and low-income students
This study was based on the performance of the middle school to high school students that are at risk for academic failure due to being low-income. The researcher includes how social communication and support can help to improve sociability. Data collected is based on low-income “at risk” students who had not much social support or communication. The study found that childre ...

II - Background of the Study:
The area of focus for my project is improving Reading Comprehension Through the use
of Higher Order Thinking Skill Activities. Without the solid foundation of reading skill the
researcher feels the children will be struggle hard throughout their schooling and adult life. By
learning the best comprehension strategies and how to best teach these strategies to the
pupils, the researcher hopes to provide the solid foundation needed to succeed. Although the
school's NAT results has met or exceed its expectation, still the researcher has a thought of a
way to improve it. In reading class, the grade three pupils scored 84%, but the scores dropped
in the 4th grade. So the researcher concludes that the pupils score decreases because of the
pupils have very poor higher - order thinking skills to increase reading test scores and develop
meaningful reading experience to the pupils.
III - Statement of the Problem:
As the researcher of this research, I have found out that many of my pupils in grade III
are able to read fluently, but still have difficulty in answering the "how" and "why" questions. I
am hoping that by incorporating higher order thinking skills my pupils would be able to transfer
and make connections to reading. This is important in order for a child to be successful. I feel
that incorporating reading strategies and showing students how to reflect about what they
have read, would improve their reading comprehension and to become life-long learners. I am
looking forward to working on this area of concern, and sharing my findings with my costudents.
IV- Significance of the Study:
The study will be deemed important for the proper recognition of the improving

3. V- Scope of the Study
The general focus of the present study was on the Improving Reading Comprehension Through
the use of Higher Order Thinking Skills Activities of the grade III pupils in Sicud Elementary School, 2nd
District, and Province Of Palawan. The study covered the PHIL-IRI assessment result of the school year
2013-2014 utilizing the post -test. The aspects in improving reading comprehension that the present
study will look into the different reading strategies. Predicting, making connections, visualizing,
Inferring, questioning, and summarizing are shown on this research to improve reading comprehension.
VI - Research Design
A. Methodology
This study employs the pre-Experimental one shot case study. According to De Jesus,
the pre experimental one shot case study is a design in which a single group is only studied
once, subsequent to a treatment is the instruction of reading strategies . It is important to teach
the strategies by naming the strategy and how it should be used, modeling trough think aloud
process, group practice, partner practice and independent use of the strategy.
The second tool used was the Phil-IRI test administered to the pupils in the grade III
pupils in the first week of July, 2013. This tool used to determine student growth in reading
comprehension.
The teacher observation checklist was used by the researcher to gather data
throughout the intervention. This tool provides information of changes on how well his pupils
understand and use reading comprehension strategies over time.
B. Sampling Design
Purposive sampling was employed in selecting pupils - respondent of the study. The
pupils who were selected were enrolled in the third grade class for the school year 2013-2014.
C. Description of Instrument Data and Gathering Form.
The Meta-comprehension Strategy Index had a total of 25 questions divided into three parts that
asked about the strategies pupils used to help them better understand the story. Part I of MSI is consist
of statement about the strategies used prior to reading a story, Part II of the MSI consist of statement
about the strategies used while reading a story, and the part III of the MSI consist of statement about
the strategies used after reading the story.
