We generally follow the Agile method for project management. The entire project is first
split up into several small milestones with deliverables and time frame defined. Our team
works on each milestone and progress report is sent on a daily/weekly basis. Modules once
completed are uploaded to our test server for client feedback. The project manager
assigned communicates with the client and sends status reports. Some clients prefer using
project management softwares for which separate project accounts are maintained by us.

There is an experienced project manager assigned on each project. His prime responsibilities

Major Projects executed by Acumen (2005-2009)
Crosstabular Analytical Software V1.0 for All India Pension Survey Project:
1. Year – 2005, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India

Crosstab was developed for ACNielsen India as a project for the Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India
with an aim to understand the Indian market and formulating strategies to bring the Rural
community under the Pension scheme.

For this ACNielsen conducted a nationwide survey consisting of a sample size of 100,000 data in an
attempt to study the savings pattern of the Indian working class between the age group of 18-59 and
their perception to the concept of pension. The working class covered more than 90 categories of
workers including skilled, unskilled, daily wage laborers, farmers, professionals etc.

Crosstab was designed to assist the end users of this data (mostly government planners, officials of
pension department and others) in providing a user-friendly cross-tabular analysis software to
analyze the survey data. Crosstab provided a very intuitive GUI to formulate different analysis on the
vast survey database and slice and dice the data according to the users requirements without any
knowledge of using complex statistical and data analysis software.

Crosstab allowed the user to select any question from the Survey Questionnaire and cross its values
with another question. The software generates a frequency table matching the values of Question 1
and Question 2. In addition the user can set conditions/ranges to the selected questions. Users also
have the freedom to add external filters by setting a filter value from a different question from the
questionnaire. The report comes both in tabular and extensive graphical formats.

Crosstab helped the ministry to gain insights into the savings pattern of the Indian working class and
their perception towards different savings instruments and thus formulate an effective strategy to
roll out the pension program.

HIV/AIDS Population Mapping in the State of Orissa: (A GIS solution)
2. Year – 2005, State Govt. of Orissa, India

The application has been designed to provide mapping of population vulnerable to HIV/AIDS in the
state of Orissa. The different target groups like Female Sex Workers, Male Sex Workers, Land
Laborers, Truck Drivers have been identified by specific symbols. Data was collected to understand
their demographics, location, movement in and out of the State, presence of NGOs and access to
health amenities.

The application showed the different target groups on a map of Orissa with an option to analyze the
data in terms of the location of the target groups, nearest health centers, location from railway
stations, truck terminals and national highways.
For example the user could view the number of target groups who are located atleast 50 km or more
from any health center. The data would be shown on a map.

The key tasks involved in this project included:
• Digitization of State Level Base Maps with plotting of all target groups, major/minor landmarks,
Block and District Layers with Railroads and highway network.
• Digitization of Survey Sites with the option to see the enlarged map by clicking on a particular
site.
• All basic GIS features such as Zoom In, Zoom Out, Pan, Reset Map View etc.
• Option for selected layer viewing and de-selection of layers.
• Ability to generate user-defined queries based on different criteria such as volume of target
group, presence of NGOs, Condom Availability etc. These queries has the option to be saved and
the data exported to an excel file.
• Option for adding new sites in the future so that the program can be used for further surveys.

FactFinder V1.0 - Invest India Incomes and Savings Survey 2007
3. Year- 2007, Invest India Market Solutions

The Invest India Incomes and Savings Survey 2007 produced by IIMS Dataworks in June 2007 is the
most comprehensive study yet on mass markets for banking, credit, securities, insurance, micro-
finance, residential housing, mutual funds and pensions in India. Based on in-depth interviews with
100,000 respondents aged 18 to 59 years with cash incomes, and drawn from a household listing
sample of one million households, the Survey is the largest-ever study of its kind in the world apart
from the national census.

The survey has produced a unique unit-record database that directly links the incomes, investment
and savings portfolios, insurance and credit positions, retirement outlook, financial sector access,
labor market characteristics and demography of the 321 million members of the paid workforce
across urban and rural India.

Over 100 financial firms, regulators, government departments, economists and universities are
already using the data for designing public policies, regulatory response and business strategies. The
unit-record Database is embedded in customized analytical software (FactFinder 1.0) which was
designed and developed by Acumen. The data source was vastly complicated capturing the entire
gamut of income, savings and expenditure behavior for individuals belonging from the entire cross
section of the Indian workforce.

This software works on a cross-tabulation principle and enables a wide range of complex queries
using multiple variables. The software has in-built options of generating complex tables and
importing to excel; creating designer graphics and exporting to jpeg or bmp, tiff etc.; creating filters
and conditionality’s to query a defined subset of the sample; creating ranges to use discrete
variables like age, income, savings/ investment values in tabular format. The key aspect of the
software is the ability to generate extremely complicated analysis at a lightning speed of less than 3
seconds.

Among the many insights that the user can gain using the software a few of them are listed below:-

Sizing and segmenting existing and new markets;
Improving customer profiling capabilities;
Identifying and understanding the financial product preferences of consumers;
Identifying barriers that are inhibiting market growth;
Revealing the cross market savings behavior of consumers;
Assessing consumer risk appetites and their impacts on investment behavior;
Key factors determining ultimate purchase decision
Assessing financial literacy levels among retail finance consumers;
Assessing existing sales and distribution channel performance; and
Undertaking demand forecasts for financial products and services.
