Cloud Native Night February 2019, Munich: Talk by Olaf Meyer (Consol)
Join our Meetup: www.meetup.com/cloud-native-muc
Abstract: Knative is at the time being one of the most hyped frameworks for Kubernetes and OpenShift. In this talk I don't want to focus on the features from a technical point of view but rather have a look at what Knative brings to the table if you are running a cluster in an enterprise environment with different users and projects. At the end of the talk you should have a sound understanding what Knative is doing, what its benefits are, where it extends respectively conflicts with OpenShift and what its drawbacks are.
With the release of Google Cloud AutoML, Google Cloud Platform provides yet another out-of-the-box AI managed service. But this doesn’t mean that data scientists have no say in training and deploying customised machine learning models in the cloud. There are services, such as Cloud ML Engine, devoted to this specific goal. Let’s see how a data scientist can exploit GCP potential to expose its own model.

stackconf 2021 | Building the first European open source Edge Computing platf...NETWAYS
Edge Computing is becoming increasingly popular nowadays thanks to the growing availability of cloud, bare-metal and 5G providers offering flexible and affordable access to edge resources around the globe. The idea is based on moving core computational processes and storage to distant locations that are closer to the entities they interact with, like end-users and IoT devices. The benefits come from improving network latency and user experience, reducing security risks, and minimizing data transfers to central cloud locations. Thanks to the €2.1M awarded in 2019 by the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Program, OpenNebula has developed the first open source Edge Computing platform in Europe. This talk analyses the benefits and challenges associated with Edge Computing, introduces the “True Hybrid Cloud” concept, and explores how this new EU-funded Edge Computing platform contributes to consolidate Europe’s digital sovereignty by integrating other relevant European open source technologies and by providing future access to the GAIA-X federated infrastructure.

Project teams often use shadow IT, instead of the more slower moving traditional IT, to facilitate rapidly changing complex business requirements and quick release cycles. As a result an unmanaged, ungoverned set of IT solutions reside in enterprises without ownership. The risks of shadow IT keeps the CIO awake at night: business continuity to data protection to unmanaged costs are just a few of these risks. At the same time, the smart CIO knows not to wage war against shadow IT because that’s what keeps the business innovating rapidly.
In this session Asanka Abeysinghe, VP of Solutions Architecture at WSO2, will present how enterprises can leverage cloud enabled ALM frameworks to build managed and governed empowered IT. Topics to be discussed include, managing quick release cycles, template driven rapid development, empowering developers to develop, test and release apps in a governed secured manner, and providing internal business capabilities as APIs for application development. In addition Asanka will explain how innovative WSO2 clients are already gaining startup speed, reducing project risk, and enabling new business models by adopting WSO2 DevOps PaaS solutions

In this brief talk I will touch up on how Pivotal & CloudFoundry Foundation driving a Cloud Agnostic Platform based approach towards building modern cloud native applications without worrying about the hassles of 'Day 2' issues of managing VM and Container clusters and its adoption across enterprise segments. I will also talk about few of the latest stuff in the market including the developments in BOSH, Open Service Broker APIs initiative and OCI (Open Container Initiative). Today Cloud Foundry Garden and Docker are two implementations of OCI and Garden containers can run a Cloud Foundry / Docker /Windows container image.
Open Source means a lot of things and revolutionized the way software is built over the last two decades.
Whether developing a product or providing a service, companies are rushing to get their businesses cloud ready, increasingly (big) data driven and flexible enough to take advantage of the inherent business scalability opportunities offered by the cloud.
And as the focus switches to the scale economies of execution, from ever cheaper opaque hosted web storage and connected services to the immutable containers movement, a question arises: what is the role of Open Source software in a world in which not only software (SaaS), but also platform (PaaS) and infrastructure (IaaS) are increasingly delivered (and consumed) as hosted services?
In this session, we'll attempt to answer to this question, by providing examples of Open Source cloud & big data companies and studying the effects of open development ecosystems and how Open Source is engrained in the fabric of the Cloud.
Teams using IaaS and traditional application servers to deploy cloud applications benefit on-demand efficiencies, but continue to spend significant effort on application delivery, including deployment, scaling, and governance. PaaS solutions have helped automate some functions, but still falls short. Examining how to address these challenges with a PaaS, this session will also review the architectural approach of the WSO2 Private PaaS to be cloud native, providing polyglot language and environment support, and ability to run on multiple runtimes.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
