2. Voice
• In Grammar, voice shows whether the subject
of the sentence is doing the action or whether
the action is done to it.
3. Active Sentence
• In active sentences, the thing doing the action
is the subject of the sentence and the thing
receiving the action is the object.
[Thing doing action] + [verb] + [thing receiving action]
Example:
Salma washes the dishes.
The teacher teaches the students.
4. Passive Sentences
• In passive sentences, the focus is on the
action. The thing or the person who does the
action ( the subject) is not important or we do
not know who does it.
Salwa washes the dishes.
The dishes are washed (by Salwa).
5. Form of the passive
Object + verb be + past participle (verb 3)
6. Form of the passive
• Subject ( object of the active) + be + past
participle
• the object of the active sentence becomes the
subject of the passive sentence
• the form of the verb is changed (to be + past
participle)
• the subject of the active sentence becomes the
object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)
